Hi,

Look out, here comes some free advice...

If your doctor suggests radioactive iodine treatment, run! I had it done
b/c my Graves Disease was not "going away" after 10 years of taking
medication. Supposedly, it often goes away on its own. After I took this
iodine, which was brought into the room by a guy in nuclear protective
gear and it was in this heavy stone canister wheeled on a dolly, I got
sick a few weeks later. I was tired all the time and was sleeping and
sleeping like Rip Van Winkle. Turns out I came down with Cytomegalovirus,
which feels like long-term mono, and it lasted over a year. Coincidence
that I contracted this shortly after my poison cocktail? I bet not! Just
something for you to ponder. Consider the surgery.

Hi Jenn,
My dad had graves and swaloowed that radio active stuff too. Well 1 yr later
he was dead at the young age of 61!! He died of stomach cancer. There are alot
of studies especially in England where they are finding a relationship between
drinking this radioactive iodine and stomach cancer!! I am with you I dont
trust the stuff!! IMHO !! Something else to ponder :) Regards,

I was told by a Dr. (PhD) that approximately 80 % of the population will test
positive for Cytomegalovirus. I am positive for this and can't remember having
'had' it.

I also had the RAI and had no problems with it. You may have been one of the
few unlucky ones but for the most part it is certainly the quickest and easiest
way to stop Graves' in its tracks. I think the majority of the people that had
RAI treatment had a fairly easy time of it.

Hi Jennifer

I don't know if your RAI caused the CMV attack or not but it may have led to
your immune system being depleted enough for the virus to become active.
I have my second active attack of it right now which has lasted this time for
over 7 months. No RAI though, just Hypo and having problems. At least
80% of the population has at some stage in their lives been infected with CMV
usually as a child at school, kindergarten, or later in life through contact
with body fluids - your child, your partner etc. In almost everyone it
causes no problems at all other than maybe a very mild flu-like symptoms and
a mild rash. For people who are immuno-compromised in some way, like us,
then it is most certainly a problem. E-mail me if you like and I will pass
on some good advice I have received from others in this news group on how to
try and keep this little nasty at bay.

RAI or Surgery isof choice but also consult with your doctor on either options. RAI for Graves Disease will make some people go into the Hypo stage. I had RAI for thyroid cancer 8 years ago, and the results of RAI are different depending on the person.

Yes, most people get it, and don't know they had it or just
fight it off successfully. I found out about it when I was giving
blood. I got a letter in the mail telling me that I had anti-bodies
against it, and would I like to donate again soon?
Incidentially, I was hyper at the time, and didn't know it yet.

I suppose it's different for everyone. I was treated with radioactive
iodine for hyperthyroidism at the age of 13 (about 28 years ago.) I sure
don't remember anyone wearing any protective gear, but things were a
little different back then (after all, "duck and cover" under a desk was
supposed to protect us from the effects of an H-bomb in those days...)

Anyway, I had no ill effects, beyond going a bit hypo. (The ignorance of
some doctors in the 20 years following was another matter, though, and a
different story.)

Sylvia.

I agree wholeheartedly with Jennifer, my experience was extremely,
frighteningly similar!! Maybe there is a group of us who should NEVER take
this treatmment. Maybe our batch wasn't pure, who knows? Each treatment is
for the inddividual I suppose, right? I just wholeheartedly agree with her.
Others, maybe not. Just another with the exact same experience.
