Hi,

I'm begiining to despair at the situation with regards to clothes for
tall blokes in the UK. I am 6'6" (inside leg 35") and although, yes,
you can reasonably easily find long trousers these days, they all seem
to be very bland / tailored trousers or very plain looking jeans. If
you're looking for a bit of style I'm coming to the conclusion that
you are, in effect, screwed.

To date I have found that most Next stores carry something akin to
modern style jeans/trousers up to 34" inside length - which I
currently have a few pairs of. Not ideal though. I have just been
browsing the internet and have come up with precisely nill, it's the
same dull stuff available elsewhere. My brief look down the list of
stores listed at the UK Tall Persons Club yielded similar results.

Looking at the mainstream clothing catalogues is extremely depressing,
most just specify short, regular, long - where long is (mostly) 33".
Well frankly I would look like a bit of a prat with 33" trousers on I
can tell you :)

I have similar problems with shirts, jumpers (arms always too short
else too baggy). Am I doomed to live in ill-fitting clothing hell for
the remainder of my days? Should I be making trips to the US to buy
stuff? - as I have heard mention of occasionaly.

Surely the tall person demographic is significant enough now to be
make it commercially viable to make clothes for. Why is it that
products exist for every concievable niche you can think of and yet
there is this whole market of non-average-person-sized clothing that
seems to have been overlooked.

Right now I feel like compiling some facts and figures on just how
many young tall people there are today in the UK and firing some
letters off to clothing retailers/manufaturers pointing out the size
of this market that they are ignoring!

In summation, I no longer wish to look like a spoddy twat and am
unwilling to surgically alter my body frame to more closely match the
average persons size and shape. Is that unreasonable? :)

<sigh>

Colin.

Well Colin

You've hit the nail on the head. If the Tall Club supplier directory
isn't much help then your main option is a trip to New York City and the
legendary Woodbury Common factory outlet in Upper New York State.

Have a look at the TCI web site for some shopping ideas. I've done
Woodbury a couple of times. Well worth it.

Hi Andrew,

Sounds like it's worth a look. What about Sweden or some other
scandinavian country? I believe they have taller than average
populations, they're closer and they don't have draconian security
measures at their ports! A colleague just arrived back from the US and
said he was made to feel most unwelcome both arriving (and leaving -
something of an achievment that :)

Cheers,

Colin

The choice is more limited in Sweden (been there several times) and
Scandanavia is more expensive as a whole. New York is probably one of
the best places in the world for clothes shopping and it is dead cheap.

Just smile nicely at immigration in NYC (legendary for it's ferocity)
and don't look too suspect.

I've done it and would do it again when I needed to buy clothes.

Tommy Hilfiger trousers at US$37 plus sales tax at Woodbury
Common.......

Mail me off list for more info.

your posting struck a cord with me, my husband is 6'6 and needs a 36"
trouser, he is slim and young. He can find jeans and some casual trousers
(GAP do do 36") he can get suits and formal shirts. But there is no way to
get other decent fashionable clothing, no nice slim fitting casual
jumpers, no decent casual jackets, short sleeve items are too short in the
body. Any internet stores only cater for tall, fat and also old men.

For women there are niche shops that sell good stuff and don't assume you
are old and fat (Long Tall Sally being a fine example), but the male
equivalent does not exist in this country which is increadible given the
increasingly tall young people there are.

I do try and write to shops on his behalf whenever I see an opportunity
such as when shops say they stock longer sizes (although as you say, a 33"
leg isn't long, it's not even what I would consider long for myself!), and
even then they assume tall men don't have a top half to their body!

Don't give up though,
we tall people will inherit the earth!
