I think you have just quoted me! Were you lurking behind the rack at a
shoestore when I was there?

I'm pretty sick of my big feet (12AA) too, but I wouldn't trade an inch
of my height for a shoe size smaller. What I hate the most is how much
I have to pay for my shoes. As a grad student I can't afford the Easy
Spirits that my feet and back are hooked on. I just keep the basics in
my closet (white tennies, penny loafers and black pumps), and grab up
anything that I find and can afford (that doesn't tie up the side!)

There is some hope. I was killing time at a strip mall recently and
stopped in to Famous Footwear ( a store I gave up on a long time ago).
I was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of size 11, but still only a
few 12. But when the clerk came by, she turned out to be a manager,
and told me that she has been pushing to get more and more size 12 in.
She took my name and number, and I recently got a call that their new
shipment had a lot of 12, and when they would be putting it out! (I
didn't go, out of cash for the month!)

After 20-odd years of shoving my feet into size 12's, however (not because I wanted to, mind you, but because that's what I could find), they've gotten a bit squished and now I wear a B-width. I have a slightly different wish - I wish the fashion industry would
cater for more than the absolutely average. My feet are just outside
the normal range - most catalogues hree say "sizes 6-10" and I wear
10.5 or 11. I don't know how our sizes correspond to American sizes...
but I know if my feet were too much smaller I'd fall over unless I was
also shorter, and I love being tall! :)

But yes, Jenny, I sympathise deeply. Shoes are a hassle. A major
hassle. If I can ever find shoes they're horribly expensive... It's so
frustrating when you walk in and ask for size 10.5 and they say (if not
"we don't carry that size at all") "We don't have any left - those
large sizes are always the first to go." Can't they take a hint?
Doesn't this tell them somethine? Unebelievable!

We've just been fortunate enough to have the first clothing store aimed
at tall women in Australia open in Melbourne. The lady who runs it was
trying to get in some larger shoe sizes from a well known maker, but
since a store round the corner stocks that make of shoes, the
manufacturer would not sell to her - despite the fact that the other
store does not stock the sizes she wanted to stock! Strange, but true.

Jenny:

I hear you! I too am 6'2", but my feet stopped at 12 (thank goodness)
although they are also very wide and with a high arch/instep.

I have only 5 pairs of dress shoes -- and they are men's -- and I keep
taking them to the cobbler to be resoled and repaired because I can't find
replacement shoes easily (or at all most seasons).

Sometimes I'll buy a pair of women's shoes in "extended sizes" but I
always regret it and end up donating them to the Salvation Army. Shoe
manufactures make our sizes as an afterthought, and they are never
PROPORTIONATELY larger -- they're just an elongated version of a size 9.
No wider, no taller.

I currently work in an office where I am expected to dress in a
professionally feminine manner which includes pointy, little dainty,
little Cinderella shoes. Of course I don't, cause I don't own any.

My next job? Maybe a lifeguard, or a grape stomper at a winery... so I
don't have to wear any shoes at all!

I have big feet AND hands! I'm only 5'11.5" and I wear 12M shoes and have
equally big hands. I envy tall, small to medium-boned women!

You should be proud of yourself, your body and your looks, and not envious
of anyone else. Do you know how many women and men would LOVE to have
your height and/or build? Be proud of what you've got, and flaunt it
every chance you get.

I'm forever having shoes resoled, repaired, re-anythinged too. Once you've
found a decent looking pair that fits, you can't afford to chuck them out.
I'm frequently told somthing like, "I could fix them, but there's hardly
anything left to work with. It's going to cost you at least $35. You may
as sell chack them out and buy a new pair"
....if only I could find a new pair! It's worth the $35 to make
them last a few more months!

Jenny,

I am sympathetic ... though don't have quite your problem. I only
wear an 11 m. Though, we should be greatful of the selection we do
have now ... just a few years ago, things weren't so good. I remember
when I was graduating from 8th grade, I was about 5'9" and wore a size
5 dress and size 10 shoes. My mom made my dress, she started when I
was 5'8" and I grew an inch and the darn thing was to short. I
couldn't find any shoes to wear suited for a teenager, so I wore hers
(she was 5' 113/4" with a size 10 shoe). From that point on, it has
been difficult to find shoes ... until the last 3 years or so.

I will not complain as much anymore now that I know there are others
with a much more difficult task. I have had luck buying from
Rockport, Reebok, and I also buy some unisex style shoes and find it
easy to fit into the men's size, though they are sometimes to wide.
Keep your chin up ... be glad to be tall :-)
