When You Get Off Chantix - Experiences???

Hi Folks! Cat suggested we start a thread on this as it seems that
there are now enough of us Chantix users who are either taking it or
stopped. I agree as I feel that on a lot of levels we are the first
generation of users paving the way for others. My own experience was
this. I am a ditz about taking an evening dose, which Chantix
requires. So about 2-3 weeks into taking the med and about a week
into the quit, I missed a PM dose. When I realized that I had done
this the next morning, I assessed how I felt. Idecided to see if I
could get by on one pill a day. So, I did that most of the time for
the full 90 days you are supposed to medicate. When I stopped, I sort
of expected a blib, but it was totally a non-event. I did notice that
my anxiety level was a tad higher but certainly much less than if I
were going CT. But as soon as I noticed it, it stopped. Totally
nothing else and I've been pill free over 60 days, if I sit down &
figgur; it out.

So, any other 'war stories' to add?

I would love to hear from anyone else who has quit. How you coped
with knowing you are now quit and stopping this lifesaving drug. Any
side effects or differences you notice?

I would also be interested. Been taking the tabs for 8 days (0.5mg) followed
by 10 days of 1.00mg twice a day.
The treatment works and although sometimes I feel that side effects are a
little overwelming I know that my quit wouldn't last if I modify or stop the
treatment.
I'd like to hear what happens when, having completed the course, we are on
our own. As it happens, for me this will coincide with
the beginning of a six weeks job which can be stressful at times.

Best.

Hello All,

My experience has been similar to Mike's. I did the patch for the 1st
month of my quit then my doctor suggested Chantix. I then did the 90
day program but the last month I only took 1 pill in the morning. Just
like Mike, it was an accident the first time I skipped the PM dose but
I didn't feel goofy and didn't go completely nuts so I kept going like
that. I am not suggesting that everyone do that but that is what
worked for me. When the 90 days was up......I stopped the pills but
after a couple of days I felt the urge so I took one, got through the
day (not sure the Chantix helped at that point or not) and haven't had
one since. I will celebrate 6 months smoke free tomorrow......so it
worked for me. I would do a testimonial for Chantix if asked.

Keep on kickin' butt.......or tomorrow they'll be hell to pay (SNZ)

I, too, accidentally missed a PM dose once, and didn't discover it until
morning. That made me feel really good about my quit. But I wasn't
willing to take any chances with my quit. I continued taking the meds
as prescribed right up to the end AND I took the one that I missed. I
was afraid to give myself any little out to go back to smoking. Better
safe than sorry, I say.

I was very nervous about going off the meds, and I fretted about it for
a couple of days before the meds were gone. Yes, I think the first two
or three days off meds were not as "comfortable" as when I was on meds,
but I don't know how much of that was my own fear of being off them. I
kept wondering if it wouldn't be better to "wean" off them than to
cold-turkey it when the meds wear off. But it was really nothing more
than minor discomfort, which is why I think it was mostly just my own
anxiety about it. After a couple of days, I was chugging along just
fine and haven't missed it since.

I, too, would give a resounding testimonial for Chantix, and I use every
opportunity to tell people how great it's been for me!

Thanks for your response, Cindy. I guessed getting of Chantix would
not be too much of a 'step-down' for me since I was only taking 1 pill
a day, but I am glad to read that even if you were on it full strength
that the quit was still a non-event. I do think that Chantix does
need to cover that part of the quit better in the stuff they write
about the med. I, too, was worried that I'd be wacked with all the
urges I never got. This is why this thread is so good as we can tell
each other how it worked for us. Congrats, also for the 6M. I don't
think you posted it when you reached it, so I'll send out the Gnomes
to wake you up in the morning with cheerful songs of smobriety to
celebrate the occasion!

Oh, I posted it, but it was a quiet little blip among the chaos. LOL
That's what I love about this place, I can post or not post, read or not
read, it doesn't make one bit of difference and yet it does. :)
