Oh dear, oh dear!! I just realized what
is going on inside of this convoluted mind of mine.
And I am on VERY shakey ground.

I am the type of person that, when someone tells me
I can't do something or shouldn't do something I will
definately do it just to defy them, or prove that I can.

Well, I started this quit defying the addiction, the craves,
the tobacco companies, the nicodemon etc. But now,
which happens every quit for me it seems, I am fighting myself.
"What do you mean, Barbi, you can't go to the store and buy
cigarettes, that's BS and I'll prove it..." I don't even really
have a craving now, but I have been walking by the front
door ready to get my keys just to PROVE to my
goodie two-shoes self that I can do whatever I want
to, and if I want to smoke, then pffttt.

This 'tude has gotten me off quits before. But before,
I didn't sit here and post, I acted on that defiance. This
time I'm doing the right thing... but who knows what could
happen in the next hour! Oooo, and I'm worried about tonight..

First, HAPPY St. PATRICK's day all! Which means, I'm
off to party tonight. It's not the beer (green, of course) that
I'm afraid of.. my S.O. and I belong to a local wine club and
I have attended our weekly meetings and drank with no
rise in craves or lessening of will. What I am afraid of is,
well, it's like a big party, at the bar, with rowdy friends and
strangers and, well, that is just a trigger for me. This sort
of situation was always my favorite time to smoke. Oh well,
I'll make it, especially since my S.O. wouldn't dare let me
have one.. well, he would if I really wanted to, because I would
threaten to leave him, or atleast maim him if he didn't. So, I'm
on my own on this one, and by writing down this fear, I am
confident that I will NOT smoke tonight now... it is no longer
a fear, it just lost it's power. Now I wish this defiance thing would.
That one is harder for me to conquer.

thanks for letting me ramble,

Barbi
(((Mark)))

I truly relate to all you have said in
your wonderful post. In the mid 1970's
I kicked the drugs..in 1990 I quit the booze..
since then have tried many times to quit the
smokes, and finally think I will conquer this too
(by far and away, the most difficult addiction
for me to kick... damn tobacco).

I REALLY wanted to do this cold turkey... but
ended up using the patch and an occasional
chew of the gum. I wanted to go cold turkey
because I didn't want to have to kick the
NRT too (hmm, think I may have an addictive
personality?) But you know what? I want to
quit these sickerettes even more, so why should
I care about maybe getting hooked on NRT at
the moment, I have enough things to worry about.

I have a friend who quit smoking 10 years ago, and she STILL
uses the gum after a meal or drink. Doesn't seem to harm her
in anyway, and her hubby is an MD.

I sincerely hope that today is a better day for you, you
have been such a help in my quit. You gave me a pat
just when I needed one, and, well, sniffle...sniffle, you
always said just what I needed to hear, but then you disappeared!
So glad you posted. I, too, have blown quits because I stopped
posting here and didn't reach out when I needed it. Not going to
do that again.

Huggz and peace,

Barbi

Ah yes, the "independence" attitude. It starts off with "You know you can
handle holding a pack of cigarettes." It then moves on to "Holding a sigle one
isn't going to hurt after all, you're still quit." At that point it goes to
"Lighting it will make you feel better even without inhaling."

We know that you are physically capable of going to the store without ruining
your quit, etc all the way to taking a single drag and never touching them
again. It's not the physical I'm worried about, it's your mental. Do you
remember the first few days? Do you honestly remember the empty cravings of the
first few hours? Do you want to go through that again because if you put a
cigarette in your month you'll be dealing with them again.

You don't need to prove anything to anyone. So don't.

Eric
I quit smoking for good 2 months, 2 weeks, 5 days, 15 hours, 22 minutes and 26
seconds ago. I have not poisoned myself with 2041 cigarettes since quitting,
saving $280.64 for lap dances. What's that dear? No lap dances? But ... but...
<sigh> Okay, saving $280.64 for flowers and shrubbery. I have added 1 week, 2
hours, 5 minutes to my life to enjoy any lap dances I can get away with.

See my directly posting above.

Barb-- you are going to have a faaaaab time tonight! Not sure if it's still
relevant, but it sounds to me like you'd sorted out your "defiance" feelings
quite well--in other words, though concerned I was/am confident you're doing
ok.

Happy St. Pat's!!

So Barb, let me get this straight : You, with this supposedly
"independent spirit and feistiness" are going to allow this "other"
barb that likes to smoke, to tell you how to run your life ? Doesn't
sound very bloody independent to me. Sounds more like she's the one
telling you what to do, and like a wee puppy, you're doing it. Please
tell me I'm wrong.

Worry about it when you get there, but be forewarned: I'll tell you
the same thing I've told some of the other ladies: Smoke, and you
won't get to see me naked at the hot tubs. Let that be a warning to
you young missy !!

Conquer this trigger, and it ceases to be a trigger. Merely an
annoyance.

Barbi --

Do not smoke.

Repeat after me, I will not smoke. I don't want to smoke. That is the
real victory.

Now, if the urge get to be tooooo much tonight, make me one promise.

Before you smoke that first ciggie, take a tablespoon of black pepper
and put it in your mouth. Now just hold it there for, oh, say, about
five minutes. Now swallow. How does your throat feel? Not good, does
it?

Now, still wanna smoke. Ok, ask the bartender for his bottle of Tabasco
sauce. Yep, you guessed. Pour a big heaping tablespoon full. Put it
in your mouth. Now, hold it, hold it, hold it. Yep, five minutes outta
do it. Now swallow, real slow. Nope, don't grab that glass of beer or
water. No chasers needed here.

Ok, now do you still wanna smoke? If you do, run home, jump on the
computer and start posting. It is a Friday night, I am sure someone
will be here all night and they will talk you out of this crave.

Remember -- you have three weeks and five days under your belt.
Remember what those 26 days have felt like. Do you want to go through
them all again? Do you want to feel the quilt you will feel when you
have to tuck your head and come here and tell us that you have smoked?
I don't think so.

Have I convinced you yet that you are being MORE defiant by not
smoking? Yep, you sure are. SO DON'T SMOKE, OK?

Hang in there,

Coleen
I will quit smoking in 2 weeks, 7 hours, 54 minutes and 48 seconds.

PS: Sound like an expert on this don't I? Well, when I quit in a
little over 2 weeks, you can be sure it won't be my first quit, but by
the Grace of God and help from you all, IT WILL BE MY LAST!!!!!!!!!!!

Barb - I went through the same bleepin thing about a month into
my last quit. I finally decided that I had to quit IN SPITE OF
all of the good I was doing for myself. I know that sounds
crazy, but I just decided that I would be stubborn and stick to
it, regardless of my own proclivities for rebelling against
anything that is good for me.

Amazing how that works, and it works every time.
Yup, I'm through it now, it's over and done. I'm ready

I'm sure it'll all work out but you need to rename it the Evil Week 4
shittiness. Just put it down to brain fog. <scooting out as fast as he
can>

Hey Barbi,

Bet you can't resist poisoning yourself hour after hour, day after day. Bet you
won't allow yourself to enjoy being healthy and in CONTROL of your life. SURE,
you could do it for a while, but a lifetime? nope, don't think so....

ya, the news is good, but I'm so frazzled..
it took every ounce of strength not to bum
(or as some would say MOOCH, grin) a
cig off of someone there.

Yup, I believe you are right, I always
seem to catch what you had the day before! Grin.

Really hard night, but I made it by the hair
of my ... no not going to Susan's hairy balls theme.

*****Ohboyohboyohboy - does this ring a bell?? Yup - CLANG! I nearly lost
my quit after I'd been here for a couple of weeks because some stoopid git
(who I've never seen again by the way - I'm looking over my shoulder now...)
posted the most incredible red-rag-to-the-Susan-type-bull - hairy balls - oh
look - THAT's where they come from - I digress - sorry - post on this ng
that said something like:- most of the world doesn't smoke - why be
different? Oh, WOW - oh, WOW.... Well - excuuuuuuse meeeeeee - I was half
way up the road to the fag shop (NO, Susan - NOT fag - nonono - the smokes
shop) before I realised what I was doing.

Not kidding. No, I'm not kidding. Jeez - that was CLOSE. I had to really
fight with myself - this caused some amusement to passersby I can tell you.
But I won and I marched home and I got on the computer and I, well, I hardly
like to admit it - I let out a banshee type wail and I just MARKED THAT POST
AS READ!!! Yessiree - that's what I did. And I'm still here to tell the
tale (which seems to be getting a bit out of hand - but I suspect you get my
drift).

I've snipped the rest of your post whilst wondering if we're related at all?
After that little incident I had to decide to stop using my head and simply
use my bolshiness. In fact I have a friend who, despite never having
smoked, is most concerned about my quit and the effect it's having on me and
our e-mails to each other are headed up:- 'Bolshi cow' - because it's that
bolshi cow that has decided not to smoke. That's it. Finish. No more
story. If I think about it then I'm in grave danger - so - no thinking - I
just have to puff out my cheeks, purse my lips, stamp my cowboy-booted foot
and say to myself:- 'This bolshsi cow is not going to smoke - no matter
what' - and I know that this bolshi cow won't smoke - however, should my
other persona(s) come to the fore - well - criminy - God knows what might
happen - spontaneous combusion probably.

I reckon you'll do, Barb - this is from one bolshi cow - er - um - person -
bolshi person - to another - don't think about it - just don't do it. Just
don't smoke.

Susan
Fred says - yeah - and I'm one pretty bolshi meter too - helloooo,
helllooooo, Barb's meter - helloooo - stay bolshi you there:- Four months,
two weeks, three days, 9 hours, 6 minutes and 8 seconds. 3459 cigarettes not
smoked, saving £238.70. Life saved: 1 week, 5 days, 15 minutes.

If I need tips on how to rant, I'll ask you! Grin.

From the site I mentioned: bolshie Adj. Angrily provocative. Originating
from the socialist revolutionaries the Bolsheviks.

Is this a good definition, Susan?

Hmmm. I know that in Canada I've seen it used to refer to anyone
whose political leanings were left of right, and I seem to remember a
few Brit friends who used it in the same way.
