Quick recap for those that have no clue. An old guy lost track of the
brake and gas pedal and pinned me to the back of my boom truck at 30
mph. My femurs now have titanium rods. I had a check up today. They
say I'm ahead of the curve on recovery. (I bust my butt in PT). They
hinted I might not get back all the way to be able to do my job, but
left the door open, I like a challenge. I don't go back for 6
months, but hey I have been able to get in the boat and go fishing,
all though I had to eliminate the spring runoff boat trips on the
river. Essentially I'm walking like Chester or maybe using my cane if
tired but I"m walking yeah!!!!

Thanks for the update, Mike! You definitely have come a long way from
when you first posted after the accident. With the fortitude you have
I expect you will go much further than most anyone else in your
situation. Keep on kicking butt and keep it in the road!

We should be thankful that modern medical tech makes this possible.
How many years ago were titanium rods and replacement knee joints
speculations that existed only in science fiction? Not so many.

We should also demand stricter standards for renewing the drivers'
licenses of elderly people. I remember reading about an incident
several years ago where some old guy accidentally mowed down a whole
crowd at a Santa Monica street fair.

Congrats, Mike. Keep up the hard work. You've been very disciplined in
your recovery, if anyone can make it back to fulltime work it would be
you. If you were still smoking, you'd have set your recovery time back
enormously.
Glad to hear you're back walking. Fishing is good for the soul, go grab

I'm mixed on this Eldon. I think family friends and neighbors may be
best in helping people who shouldn't drive anymore or restrict
themselves to short familiar trips. My mother is 90 and was my main
transportation until I could drive. She plays 18 holes of golf a week
and takes a Tai Chi class. But I have to remind her to take her
time. She's a hot rodder and when she is in a hurry she fails to be
as cautious as she should be. When she takes her time she does well.
She knows to avoid driving in the dark.

Geez John whats going on. Hopefully they can repair that retina Was
this because of the Lazic or just one of lifes little twists.
Hopefully that knee isn't keeping you from your bike riding? How's it
been going, are you still riding? Has rich america bought all the
land around you yet? Getting old sucks doesn't it. LOL

you need it. Stay strong Mike, keeping my fingers crossed here for you,

Mike , The retina detache din Nov 08, then tore a week later, 2
surgeries kater then a catarct operatrion because of all the other
stuff. Bad genes, bad eye sahpe and bad luckis why it tore Lasik had
nothing to do with it.
Yeah still on the bike. My old LeMond was rear ended by a cadillac
and 80 year ool fart last sunday. ruined the rim and it is at the
shop to see if frame is bent. I have numerous bruiss and some road
rash on my butt. there are photos on Facebook.com.

the rich have even had bad times in this economy. the date of Montana
purchased a 120 acre parcel across the high from for a state park that
abuts a waterfowl production area. the 65 acres aroud is in the flood
plian. So all I need is the rich person who wants great waterfowl
hunting and a view of the Swan mountain range to set me up for life.
Cu zit won't be cheap. But in three to five years this 10 acre arcel
with well, septic and DSL plus high way easment, plus paved county road
will be a nice investment for 30 years of payments. I hope LOL

Hmmm... you had your legs smashed and you're mixed? Well, I'd say you
are also very forgiving.

My grandfather, who had cataracts rremoved from both eyes before lens
replacements, was nearly as blind as a bat wearing glasses about 1/4"
thick. He was very careful with his driving, and also careful about
renewing his driver's license on time, because he knew if they ever
tested him, he wouldn't be driving, period. A friend's mother, who was
in her 80s, caused an accident and wound up as a vegetable due to a
major concussion.

BTW, here is an article about that Santa Monica case I mentioned. He
killed 10 people and injured 60.
www.thefreelibrary.com/HORRIFIC+SANTA+MONICA+MARKET+CRASH+THAT+KILLED+10+PEOPLE,+INJURED+60...-a0153266575

Many areas have cheap taxi vouchers and van services for elderly
people so they can get out and about without endangering themselves
and others. I don't think it's exactly elder abuse to insist that
people meet certain standards of vision, alertness, response time and
so on.

Maybe I should have clarified better. I don't want people who can't
drive safetly under given conditions driving. I just am not impressed
with how the goverment deals with problems. I wouldn't be opposed to
having a requirement for their Dr. to certify they are physically and
mentally capable. Also I don't have any ill will toward the gentleman
that hit me, but yes I do expect some compensation for lost wages ect.
All I had to do was get better he woke up everyday knowing what he
did. It happens he died about a month after the accident which I
imagine was a contributing factor. I think I'd rather crack down on
the DUI drivers first. Here in Washington state they do a terrible
job of keeping them off the road.

Isn't that a bit of an uneven match? But hell, maybe the geriatric set
should start driving Humvees just to protect their frail old bodies in
case they happen to collide with something.

As I recall Fred you went through you own wheel barrel load of crap
last year. It happens to a lot of us. A lot of the people here have
had health issues or major turmoil in their lives. Just like not
smoking or anything else a lot of times we control our recovery. Fact
I remember you doing some wild diet things for your health. Did that
work?
