It's that time of the year again were I get to climb the soapbox and put a
spotlight on myself to celebrate the defeat and exorcism of my nicoDemon by
doing a little preaching to the choir and kick in a few open doors, after
which you cheer me on for making it another trip around the block. Sheesh,
does life get much better than that?

Not everyone here likes to be in the spotlight and celebrate their
milestones, but I do. I love it. I've worked hard to defeat my nico-Demon
and I'll celebrate my arse off for years to come. The people that have been
here for a few years might remember me being so happy at 6 months in I did 3
HOF celebration posts. I've bettered my life since then and will not do that
again. This here rambling will be it. It's based on behind the scenes
ramblings and conversations about quitting and life in general that are
still in full progress.

I'll paste my meter here so anyone that doesn't want to read more of my new
age pop psych ramblings can skip them, grab a pair of clogs, undress and go
straight to partying:

Three years, 0 minutes and 0 seconds. 49320 cigarettes not smoked, saving ?
0,00.
- - -
Before we start I'd like to thank both me e-re-e and me mum for proof
reading
this puppy. If you think it's crap, take it up with them. ;)
- - -

A lot has happened in the time I've been here. I quit smoking! Even though
for years my brain said I couldn't. Even though my body tried to tell my
brain to tell over and over I *needed* to smoke, I still quit and proved
both my brain and body wrong. Even though my whole system was acting on a
deeply ingrained belief I wouldn't be able to quit.

That doesn't just tell me I'm strong though; strong enough to take control
over both my brain and part of my life. To me it also helped enter the
concept that beliefs are just what the word says, beliefs, viewpoints,
attitudes; things you believe to be true. Get a thesaurus and you'll see
beliefs are not gospel; they are a way of life. What we believe to be true
is shaped by what we have learned and gone through in our lives, and apart
from the obvious exceptions that you're not free from time and place - coz
you're stuck in your body -, pretty much every other truth is up for
interpretation.

Had you grown up differently, your so called 'truths' would be totally
different from what they are now. Ergo, what we hold as true is flexible,
often flexible enough to replace with a better and healthier truth if we
choose to do so. Isn't that a wonderful and scary concept? Imagine how much
of what we see as truth would hold up and still be the same had we grown up
in another part of this world or just with different parents and peers.
Before I digress, keep in mind in this post I opt to see a flexible truth as
*my* truth. Now, let's get back to quitting.

- - -
Remember how you thought it was impossible to quit smoking? I know I knew I
couldn't quit and I told myself so over and over. Problem is; false truths
like that oftentimes are self fulfilling prophecies. What's that saying
again? Whether you say you can or can't do something, you are right?

The way I see it is in quitting -just like fighting all other inner demons
you face in life- you, are both the puppet and the puppeteer. Meaning you
are fighting you. Well, a part of you anyway. A part that's used to getting
its way, and a part you didn't question very often coz you were rewarded for
not questioning your nicoDemon's false logic, right?

So you're fighting a power within that not only has had years to prepare its
defense, you've been accepting that defense as gospel for years and years
and even helped in its defense; a pretty grim scenario when you're going
into battle. You're facing two opposing forces with a conflict of interest,
one of which you've been rewarding for keeping you addicted 20, 30, 40 or
50 times a day.

Yeah, fighting yourself can be both a curse and a blessing at times and -not
being mutually exclusive- it often is both at the same time. Luckily, when
fighting yourself you are not just your own defense counsel, but both the
judge and jury as well; giving you the power to overrule your demon's entire
evidence.

How? First of all by understanding you're not the puppet; the puppet is a
part of you you can take control over. In quitting smoking, read up on
smoking and addiction and gather evidence. Read it learn it live it and
start building your own case and soon enough you'll find your addicted self
makes less and less sense, and after a while you'll see your demon is just a
rogue puppet pulling your strings. And it will continue to do so as long as
you let it, coz being a creature of habit your mind is perfectly ok with you
not being in control. So, stop listening to it. Take no prisoners, take
control by any means necessary and beat that puppet into submission and show
no mercy.

- - -
In this point of my life I am inclined to focus a lot on tension and
release, so my conclusions obviously are colored but I find a big part of
quitting has to do with stress and how we choose to unwind. Under stress we
often fall back on conditioned responses, whether they've proved to be
helpful in the past or not. Again, people are creatures of habit.

Good thing is, we get to choose our habits. It's not easy, but it's no
rocket science either; this is about finding alternative ways to deal with
stress, healthier ways. This is about refusing to listen to your addicted
self any longer. Adopt and adapt: use what you know. Use what works for
others and make it work for you and slowly replace your conditioned
responses for healthier responses until they become second nature and
completely replace the feeling you need to smoke. Not unlike you'd replace a
bad habit for a healthier one.

If you've been reading here you'll know how often we suggest deep breathing
and exercise. It's not just intuitively we feel what's good for us, both
people present today as well as in the past have found out the empirical way
relaxation techniques like deep breathing work wonders when you crave. Why?
Read this top 5 stress signals I found in the paper on Thursday:

1 reduction in productivity
2 being late frequently
3 Forgetting appointments and important meetings
4 Making more mistakes than usual
5 Easily distracted.

Can someone spell 'brain fog'? Recognise this is pretty much what people
complain about when they quit smoking. Do you realise how often we interpret
this as just an chemical imbalance? Wouldn't it make just as much sense to
blame stress for being foggy? Big bonus in pointing at stress is that you
can take matters in your own hands and do something about it were in just
looking at it as a chemical imbalance pretty much leaves you powerless.

Work! Retrain the brain. Use the knowledge and techniques available to you
and get your hands dirty. Can't say it often enough. Shift focus and stop
looking at the obstacles once you've identified them and start looking for
appropriate solutions; solutions suitable for you personally. As with
everything else in life, things that work best are the things you use.
Developing an arsenal of skills you are not going to use is pointless. Find
techniques that fit *your* life and use them often enough to let them become
second nature.

If you google for relaxation techniques you'll find techniques you can use
at any time and any place during the day. If you combine that with a bit of
soul-searching know what works best for you. Skip the techniques you don't
feel like using. Remember, this isn't about acquiring the biggest arsenal of
relaxation techniques possible. It's about teaching the brain to interpret
craves as a need for stress relief. So one could argue that in this case
less could be better. I wouldn't know. For the better part this is all
intuitively so as always, if you think this might work for you, do what you
think would be best for you. Your demon tells ya you need to smoke?
Bullshit. If anything you need to learn to deal with stress and relax under
pressure. Check out techniques like:

Relaxation exercises.
Deep breathing.
Yoga.
Physical exercises.
Autogenic training or Autosuggestion
Positive affirmations.

- - -
This way of thinking might all be a bit much and maybe I am overdoing it a
bit, but I've got pretty good reasons for that. Within there's a destructive
power strong enough to convince you its ok to slowly kill yourself. What if
you take control over this power and learn to use it for good? (Two brownie
points for all of you that just were thinking: 'use the force Luke!')
Imagine what that power can do for you if you take control of it.

Combine that with the fact I'm not looking for a quick fix. I don't even
believe there is a quick fix, not for most of us anyway, so I'm looking for
solutions here. I want a system to totally eradicate every possible thought
about smoking for the rest of my life. And not just that, as I've mentioned
before here, I'm not just using this to quit smoking, I am using it to cope
with other inner demons -depression, frustration, anger to name a few- just
the same. People that know me will tell ya I haven't mastered it all yet,
but I am still gaining ground. Granted, it's often two steps forward and one
step back and at times even two steps back and one step forward but I am
pretty convinced I'm getting there eventually. Enough about me, back to
quitting.

- - -
By now I already wrote half a book. But please don't fear. We're almost
there so the end is near. What I'm saying is that to me -even though we do
this all to stop smoking- the main thing about quitting might not even be
about the smoking itself, but about how you react to stress. You need to
learn how to deal with stress without smoking, and if stress itself isn't
enough you'll have to deal with craves at the same time. Notice how many
people are getting cranky when they quit? Being cranky is your system trying
to get rid of stress, as is getting angry. (One of my personal favourites,
even if it often is directed inwards.)

See what I am getting at? Focus on handling the stress as opposed to
focussing on smoking or not smoking. If you didn't want to quit, you
wouldn't put yourself through so much trouble, right? So giving in to your
craves does not make sense, and after establishing the fact that only a
*part* of you wants to smoke, you can skip that station.

Mind you, semantics count. There's a huge difference between *you* wanting
to smoke and a *part* of you wanting to smoke. To me there's even a huge
difference between wanting to smoke and thinking you want to smoke. Either
way, take the fact you're not going to smoke as a given accept all thoughts
of smoking as untruths and use them as triggers to do some stress relieve
and make that your chosen conditioned response.

See, after you established the fact smoking is no solution and you're not
going to smoke, every second spent thinking about smoking is not just a
waste of time but even counter productive coz chances are great it will just
frustrate you and stress you out even more which easily can get you caught
in a vicious circle. And since going in against what feels natural,
naturally will feel unnatural and uncomfortable at first, - OK, I just put
that sentence in for me - you'll need all your energy and put it to better
use and stay away from frustration and stress as far as possible.

Yeah, I realise what I'm writing is not an earth shattering new concept or
the biggest paradigm shift ever. And no, it will come as no surprise taking
control over the subconscious mind by consciously taking control over your
actions is just paying dues with a proactive attitude. You know, making
things better as opposed to waiting for things to get better. Like I said,
I'm kicking in open doors here, just need a lot of words to do so.

And finally, I know it's a mind-set thing, but it is not *just* a mind-set.
It's a way to teach your brain to reinterpret triggers that used to make you
want to smoke and use them for good. I do believe in willpower, and for
some it might be enough to stay quit, but for me it's not enough. I have
this firm belief willpower isn't nearly as effective in moments of severe
stress as conditioned responses are. I'm not taking willpower out of the
equation, just using it differently. In my mind using willpower is a great
way to stay quit while you retrain your brain and after a while, willpower
is no longer the main ingredient of your quit. Discard thoughts that are
holding you back and embrace the thoughts and actions that help you
become a better and healthier person.

- - -
Eh, sorry it's a bit longwinded but what else is new. I just need a lot of
words to put my thoughts on paper. Thanks for reading it. Might not be your
thing, but you'll have to agree it fer sure beats stapling a fucking rubber
chicken to your damned forehead to beat craves or having yer ass duct taped
to a ceiling. Right?

Your whole post is great, Dutch, but these are the two passages that sum up
all the rest, for me. If you remember these simple concepts, quitters,
Dutch has given all the details for how to make them a routine and real part

steveb) for keeping me sane ( or close to it) in chat in those early days
of my quit. Knowing you guys were there really helped me get my mornings on
track smokefree

WHA HOOOOOOO!! THREE YEARS OMG!! But of course we knew you would
make it. I just hope you don't stop coming here and encouraging us.
You are my mentor, without you no amount of clog dancing would cheer me
and help me go on. Congrats to you and I'm so proud of you.

Yes! Nekkidness! Just what a guy needs! And pink clogs as well? I'm not
worthy, lol.

You; you know I love ya, and love having you as a friend. And if I helped
you show a way out of this shite addiction it prolly is one of the better
things I ever did. You know I feel kinda funny when you thank me for showing
*you* the way, right? You do so much for me, to me it feels like *you* are
showing *me* the way.

Apart from keeping me sane at days I'm losing it, and reminding me some
things are not worth getting worked up over, and that sometimes it's better
to shrug shoulders at days I forget to do so; you are one of those people
that have a way of making me want to fight and grow into a 'me' I like
better.

And if that doesn't already make life better, you making me laugh so often
does. Not just when you're being stupid with me or when we do silly shit
like having fake fights or troll other news groups, but you make me laugh
about small things, about life, about myself.

And the fact you're killing me in literati pretty much every time we play
and show me my English is crap, just when I am all smug and convinced it is
getting better doesn't make me less glad you're both my friend and me
e-re-e.

Thanks again for proofreading my drivel sweetie. But most of all, thanks for
being you and for coming into my life
Yer e-re-e.
XxX

Now, let's dance!

Hehe, thanks John You King of the typo and emperor of ASCII. Glad you liked

Old people go on? If that is so I was born old. Might not be to far from the
truth coz I was told I was wrinkled and bald when I came into this world.
But earning the V in Very Old Fogey the other day sure didn't help make me
feel any younger. So I guess I'll just have to learn to enjoy being old,
coz I've worked hard for that V in Very Old Fogey, lol.

Thanks for everything Jef. Have said it before, that www.quitbuddies.org is
not just a quit saver; both you with your warped sense of humor and the
quitbuddies site are also one of the reasons I stuck around this long. I
love the new look by the way, even though not all the pics work on my end. L
Love the new look of the gallery!

Would like to big you up some more, but I have about 20 or so more thank you
notes to write. So thanks again for everything and a big hug from Holland,
Robin.

Chris, I just love being called your inspiration. Sounds even better than a
fighter for the anti-smoke brigade. And that sounds so good I'd love it on a
T-shirt. "Fighter for the anti-smoke brigade!" That would look great across
my chest, lol. Don't see you a lot in chat these days, but know you're still
very dear to me. And when people mention backgammon you always pop in my
mind. You're a sweet lady and I wish you all the very best. *Big hug and a
kiss from the Dutch kid.

Thanks for the congrats Andy, I'm glad you liked the post. Most of the time
I'll have Cat proofread my really long posts coz we've talked a lot about
quitting and I don't just trust her judgement, I trust she know what I'm
trying to say as well. Sometimes my posts get so long I kinda lose track in
the middle. Often it doesn't need a lot of change, but still, I'm glad she
wants to read it for me before I post 6 pages of nonsense and make a
complete fool of myself.

Do like the idea of the soul of it shining through by the way.

Did I ever say thanks to you Andy? See, I still believe it's not possible to
put more into this place than you get from it. So if you're going to thank
me I'll return the favour and thank you for sharing your quit. It's good
seeing people fight and regain freedom and from the looks of it you're well
on the way. All the best,

Robin.

You read it twice? I'm more than flattered; I believe it was seven pages or
so. I am already amazed people take the trouble to read it over once. I'm
real glad you liked it Barbara. About that book? I doubt if that ever makes

Glad some of it made sense Rick. Even more glad you really take time To
celebrate getting through hell week. Coz that is one milestone worth
celebrating to the max. Prolly already mentioned it but FWD is one of my all

make it all the way to freedom. Hang tough,

Mark some territory? Hehe, thanks for that mental picture Mike. A
woodworker without clogs? Are you serious? How is that possible?
You should be able to make the bestest dancing clogs on the market.
Walnut with purple heart clogs or so. Sheesh, makes me feel like
dancing just thinking about them. <grin> I'll keep it short. Enjoy the tub
in the yard Mike and thanks for being in AS3. All the very best,
Robin. <-- doesn't even have a tub, let alone a yard! :)

Thanks for the kind words Chef Paul. Don't know what to say. I'm just trying
to do what others did for me. Showing this is doable and passing on group
knowledge. I did hear a lot of 'thank you's but you know Paul. Passing on
what I picked up here and in other places prepared me for pretty much any
thing my nicoDemon will ever be able to throw at me. So I feel like thanking
all of you for helping me prepare for the worst and for helping me deal with
my
demon. So thanks. Thanks for reading my post and thanks for being here. All

'Rebraining', LOL. I just love that word!

Ten or so more posts to go and here is yours. Let me start with saying I am
glad you loved my post. You know I am a firm believer of shifting focus and
I don't know if it's in your personality or if it's the books you read but
you have this amazing ability to focus on the things in life that really
matter. For real, you're about the most positive guy I know; e-know, but you
know what I mean. And I don't mean just in good times. It's easy to make
time and find the good things in life when life is good. -Even though there
are people that can't even do that.- But you Marv, you manage to still focus
on the good things at times adversity takes over and there are not a lot of
people that can pull that off. I admire that. So you saying you loved my
post makes me proud as fuck. Thank you for sharing both your quit and so
much of your life with us and know it's great to have e-friends like you
mate. *big man_hug from Holland,
Robin.

Thanks Chris, you do know you and the rest of the established quitters that
stick around here and help the new guys quit are on *my* list of amazing
people. Yeah, I have been told I take this all to seriously, but I do
believe this place possibly helps people save their lives by teaching them
how to help themselves get rid of this addiction. I am writing 20 plus thank
you notes here, so I am repeating myself every now and then, but I have
always looked up to you guys and now I finally get to join you in the VOF
list. And the VOF hot tub! So I hope you guys saved me a space. Thanks for
being here Succorso. All the very best from Holland,

Those were good days. I have butted heads with Steve quite a few times in
AS3, but I have always said (and I'll bet he knows this, coz I never made a
secret of it) he was a miracle worker in chat. I have seen him help a lot of
people and save a lot of quits there. Chat in those days was not just a life
line for me, but a constant reminder this addiction has to be fought. I
think the beauty of it all is that everyone in chat back then showed me the
way as well. So know it was as good for me as it was for you. :-)

Thanks for being here Lynn, you're a special lady. Will never forget how we
used to scout for new quitters all day every day. To me you're really one of
AS3's angels. *big hug and a kiss from Holland,
Robin.

Married? Nah, marriage is just a very expensive way to get your laundry
done for free. Have heard marriage is not a word; it is a sentence. Also
heard it's nothing for single people as well.

Reminds me of a "joke":

Q: Why is divorce so expensive?
A: Because it's worth it.

By the way, it's not true that married men live longer than single men....
It only seems longer.

Good to now you're still pleased with your LaneWay products, bro. The only
reason I haven't been around more is that I've been WAY too busy. Have a new
band together and a CD in the works... been playing every Saturday here
locally. Have a web site I'm working on with another AS3 old-timer. Had my
50th Birthday last month. And whole mess of other stuff going on.

But, yeah, am doing well. Just checked my meter and I'm past 5M, headed for
HOF. Again. LOL...better be the *last* time, too...

Stay strong. Stay focused. Stay committed!

Congrats Lane, on pretty much everything in your post. Sheesh, I really do
hope you take some time to party every now and then coz you sure have a
lot to celebrate. If you are in the 'halfway house' at HOF, remember there's
champagne in the cellar. ;) Glad you're doing good mate. You've got a CD
in the pipeline? Way cool,
Robin.

OLD TIMER!?
Why, you little punk!
As soon as I find my glasses, my cane and my inhaler, I'm gonna get up--

Thanks, Robin (and to Rosie, as well). I do manage to get some down-time
in... enjoying my new lake view from my new apartment. Moved just down the
hall to the apt. behind mine...but the view is SO much better. MSB and the
girls got me a recliner for my B-day... and so now have a much nicer place
to relax and read. In addition, both my guitarist and drummer are into
espresso drinks, so we hang and coffee up.

And, for me, playing with my band is a celebration every moment. I'm so
excited to be working with two excellent musicians after an almost total
lack of playing since I moved here from Colorado. Before meeting them, I was
already pushing ahead on the CD... was going to hire in other musicians just
for that project. But these two appeared just as I was getting things going.
Next thing you know, we have a weekly gig on the patio of a local
cafe...Saturday from 5-8... home well before 9! And a totally laid back
atmosphere with an audience that is into what we're doing... focusing mostly
on originals, and filling the rest of our time with some traditional blues
and early blues/rock that we've reworked in our own way. It's been very good
for me musically, and especially vocally... has helped immensely in knocking
the rust off. Anyhoo.... I hope to release the CD in the spring next year.
(keeping fingers crossed)

Stay strong. Stay focused. Stay committed!

Thank you, Robin. I'm pretty boring these days, but also pretty
happy. I can run, and laugh, and breathe - it doesn't get any better
than this. There are still days when I just lack the patience to buy
the groceries, though, and you can imagine what I said today when I
found the summer school staff had trashed my work computer . . .

Squirrels in their shorts would just be a beginning!
