To dear Diane,

11 months ago tomorrow, I came to this group looking for help to
quit smoking, and hoping that I could help others in whichever way I
could, and that they found useful. After a lot of ups and downs, I
did quit smoking with your help and the help of a lot of other fine
folk here and for that, I am eternally grateful.

But, as happy as I am that I have finally been able to quit, and as
happy as I am that my life is not only going to be longer, but also
richer, I am even happier that I met you here. Actually, "happy"
doesn't even scratch the surface of how good I feel about you. I
get butterflies in my stomach every time I sit down to call you or
write an email to you or read one of your messages online. My
fingers are vibrating on the keys thinking about you now. Time
flies too fast when we're talking on the phone or in chat. I could
sit here all the live-long day and write superlatives and flowing
poetic contractions of how good you make me feel, but that won't get
me where I want to go now.

We've determined that we're intellectually compatible and
emotionally compatible and physically compatible and a lot of other
compatibles, but the bottom line Diane, is that I love you more than
I have ever loved anyone in my life. You have shown me a whole new
dimension to life, and now that I have tasted a little, I want more.
I want a lot more. I want all that you've got in exchange for which
I will give you all I've got. I want you.

I want to take care of you when you ail, and I want you to take care
of me when I am ill. I want to laugh with you when either of us has
something to laugh about. I want to give you solace when you weep,
and I want you to give me your shoulder when I cry. I want to give
you cheer when you are down, and celebrate with you when you are up.
I want to spend a lifetime of Christmases and Easters and
Thanksgivings and birthdays with you.

I want to work in the garden with you. I want to paint the house
with you. I want to cook with you. I want to do the Sunday morning
crossword with you. I want to sit on the beach at sunset with you
again. I want to shop for groceries, and furniture, and cars, and
houses with you. I want you to help me study at night if I do
decide to go back and get a degree. I want to show you how to
safely drive in snow and ice, and how to downhill and cross-country
ski and snowshoe.

I want to go with you again to next year's Prune festival in Yuba
City. I want to go to the Garlic Festival. I want us to go to
Hawaii, and Alaska, and Costa Rica, and all the other places we've
talked about. I want US to visit our friends in the region, and
elsewhere on the continent and overseas.

I could do anything I want to in life. All it takes is decision,
determination, and effort. But it all means nothing unless you're
there. Whatever I want to do, I want to do with you. And I want
it to be right for both of us. Diane, I want to spend the rest of
my life loving and caring for you as only I can. And I want to have
you as my lifelong partner to whom I want to give myself to. I want
you. I love you.

Will you marry me ?

Love,

Eddie aka Otter

Thank you Dawn. It was only fair to share as this was the place we
met and fell in love. I'm not saying that we "owed" anybody
anything, but there are a lot of people here who are happier because
we are happier. And apart from that, it would have been a little
weird if sometime in the future, we just logged on one day and said
"Btw, we're married". It would have felt like we were betraying
friends or family. The other thing is: the internet has gotten a
bad rap for introducing two people together, and having it end up
disastrous. Diane and I have said in the past that we have set a
good example for how people can meet, get together, fall in love,
and now... get married. It just needs a little realism in one's
thinking, and a little common sense I think. Thanks again for your
very nice wishes !

Ah geez, thanks Dianna !! Pity we weren't talking to each other a
month ago. We drove back through Gilroy on our way back from
Monterey, and we might have been able to get together for a coffee
at the local diner. But Diane and her mom went to the garlic
festival this year, and Diane's threatening to take me next year.
By that time I'll be her husband, and I'll "have to" go <G>. But
seriously, I've heard a lot of good things about it, and I'd like to
see it. But, I am *NOT* eating garlic flavoured ice cream, no

Well, so much for MY big announcement....
Congratulations, you two. It's like a fairytale. So, may all your
dreams come true!
Wanna adopt a few of us? I, for instance, can cook.
I'm sure there are other useful talents that might be handy to have in
the immediate family. Hawkeye, for example, can bring your mail in;
then there's Adrienne and Wheeler and Gwen for pet care. Use your
imaginations.....

Yes, how cliched - "We just got married, and we're going to Disneyland!" I

Now, as far as adopting anybody - I have 2 dogs and 2 cats (one of which is

be cruel and unusal punishment to bring any adoptees into the household for at

Awww... Thank you lass. Thank you very kindly. As for the
international get-together coinciding with the wedding ? Sure ! Makes
perfect sense to me. What better chance and reason would there be to
get everyone together ? Diane is about a quarter of the way home from
work right now, and she may have some additional input. Plus, everyone
loves a party. For those of you who are coming from Scotland, the
latest rage in California wedding gifts is 40oz of the MacAllen. But

I've always liked this passage:

In that open field
If you do not come too close, if you do not come too close,
On a Summer midnight, you can hear the music
Of the weak pipe and the little drum
And see them dancing around the bonfire
The association of man and woman
In daunsinge, signifying matrimonie--
A dignified and comodious sacrament.
Two and two, necessarye coniunction,
Holding eche other by the hand or the arm
Whiche betokeneth concorde. Round and round the fire
Leaping through the flames, or joined in circles,
Rustically solemn or in rustic laughter
Lifting heavy feet in clumsy shoes,
Earth feet, loam feet, lifted in country mirth
Mirth of those long since under earth
Nourishing the corn. Keeping time,
Keeping the rhythm in their dancing
As in their living in the living seasons
The time of the seasons and the constellations
The time of milking and the time of harvest
The time of the coupling of man and woman
And that of beasts. Feet rising and falling.
Eating and drinking. Dung and death.

Dawn points, and another day
Prepares for heat and silence. Out at sea the dawn wind
Wrinkles or slides. I am here
Or there, or elsewhere. In my beginning.

Ah geez Elle. Thank you very, very much. I've been fluctuating
between wildly ecstatic and calmly exuberant for the past couple of
days, and I don't know where it's going to stop. Right now, I am very
happily content and feeling fortunate that we know people like you
two. I could sense the happiness in your message, and it is very much
appreciated. It just makes us feel warm, and that's one of the best
feelings. Thanks for celebrating with us.

Thank you very kindly Joe ! You are a very special person with a calm
attitude that I envy, and it's good to hear these words and shake your
hand. Can I assume that if you ever do another report from the front
porch, we might get a small mention ? Not glory-seeking you
understand, but Asssville doesn't have a newspaper, and therefore no
society page. In the meantime, you've taught me a new phrase "My
hat's in the creek", and we feel nice and warm right now. Have a
seriously nice day !

Thank you very much Mike. Good wishes like these are a very pleasant
thing to give, and to receive. In a "modern" society that is becoming
increasingly soulless as well as faceless, it is the refreshing breeze
of warmth and affection that brings us back to our senses, not the
cold wind of defensiveness and self-withdrawal. Mind you, I'm still
the country-boy kind of sap that wants to have Christmas all year
round because people stop for a moment to share joy and peace. And
you want to know something funny ? I think what Lennon said is right
:

You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one

Thanks again Mike !

Awwwwwww, you two! I just love a happy beginning.... If the
wedding takes place in NorCal, I cater, I play the organ (the
WURLITZER, you guys), I sing (OK, so I actually howl with the dogs,
that's STILL singing, don't you agree?), I sew, I have a purple
feather boa and a fedora, PERFECT AS3 bridesmaid attire....

:)

I just LOVE you two! Congratulations and my very best wishes

Aw Gee Gwen {{{{{{{ Gwen }}}}}}}. Thank you VERY much !! I am shaking
like a 4 dollar vibrator, and my mind is an absolute wasteland right
now. Crikeys, if I'm like this now, what am I going to be like next
spring ? How do people actually do this, and survive ?? Glad I'm only
doing it once anyway. But, it's all worth it and we are going to be
absolutely marvelous. We were going to be anyway, but now we're going
to do it legally bound as a couple. Thank you Gwen. Keep pumping
those positive thoughts our way. We're going to need 'em. Damned if
the word "elope" isn't ricocheting all over the inside of my head right
now. <g>

Padders, you shower us with glittery confetti all you want. We
appreciate your warmth and your joy and your happy-go-lucky attitude
very much. If the master of glitterati shows up later, I am going to
welcome him with open arms, and a big fat Gallic kiss on each cheek.
As for you: {{{ X Padders X }}}. Thank you very much darlin' !!!!

You won't believe the size of the grin on my face right now. The
people at work are going to think I'm nuts. AFAIK, the wedding will
be taking place in NorCal. Diane and I want a small country-style
wedding. As in : a small wedding in the country-style, not like
Lichtenstein, or Andorra, or Luxembourg kind of small country.
Anyway, we were thinking of having it in her back yard as soon as we
can dig up the corpses and relocate them temporarily. Diane's sending
the two dogs to choir practice, and I've bought a few gallons of
liquid nitrogen so we can flash-freeze the cats to preserve them until
after the wedding. Besides which, I thought that Siamese
ice-sculptures would make a nice center-piece for the buffet table.
It will be a JOP affair (justice of the peace), but I'm kind of
hoping we'll get the governor to do the honours if we can get him
sobered up. As far as I'm concerned, your boa sounds like a great
idea because purple is my favourite colour, and I love fuzzy things
that tickle my nose, and a fedora'd woman is just so... so...
CALIFORNIA ! ANYway... as far as being bridesmaid goes, talk to
WonderWoman (soon to be WonderWife). I've already got my cousin
picked out as best man and I will let him know today. ANYWAY...
<pant> <pant> ... must breathe... ...must relax... thank you darlin'
!! We are looking forward to you being there. BTW, if it's your pie
we're talking about, then ANY situation calls for pie. Like the
sunrise, sunset, dew-fall, high-noon, westerly-wind, etc... you get
the idea. <G>

Eddie
