Probiotics Destroy Toxic Chemicals In Our Gut For Us
May 9th 2012 by Sayer Ji
http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/probiotics-destroy-toxic-chemicals-our-gut-us

It is an awesome fact of nature that we have trillions of organisms
within our body – containing completely foreign DNA – some of which
break down toxic chemicals that we humans have created to kill other
things, but are now killing us, e.g. pesticides. Who are these strange
helpers?

Bacteria!

Wait. Aren’t bacteria supposed to harm us? Aren’t they the enemy in
the endless war against infection?

Well, when our immunity fails, some can grow out of bounds
opportunistically. But they respond to the environment within which
they are raised, not unlike most other creatures. Provide organic,
wholesome vegetables, for instance, and you have a hotbed of positive
activity in your gut. Provide sugar, processed foods and an increasing
burden of chemicals and it can get ugly in there!

Also, believe it or not, ancient bacteria teamed up with our cellular
ancestors eons ago to produce the energy-producing organelles within
our cells called mitochondria. So, are we really that different from
bacteria? No, on some level, we ARE bacteria, spurning some
researchers to describe us as "meta-organisms," composed as we are of
many different living systems working symbiotically.

So, let’s look at some of the amazing feats of these friendly
bacteria….

Bisphenol A Toxicity: Absorption/Excretion – Bisphenol A (BPA) is an
increasingly omnipresent petrochemical derivative with endocrine-
disrupting properties (i.e. it messes up your hormones!) and is found
in thermal printer receipts, all world paper currency, plastics, and
many other consumer goods.[1] Sadly, it is not a matter of whether or
not you will be exposed, but to what degree. Enter the probiotics
Bifodobacterium breve and Lactobacillus casei. In rats exposed to BPA
in their diet, blood concentrations of BPA dropped significantly and
it was excreted in their feces 2.4 times more readily than the non-
supplemented control group. The researchers concluded that the
probiotics "…reduced the intestinal absorption by facilitating the
excretion of BPA, and that these probiotics may suppress the adverse
effects of BPA on human health."
Bisphenol A Toxicity: Degradation – Novel, bisphenol A-degrading
bacterial strains were isolated from the traditional Korean fermented
cabbage dish known as kimchi.[2] Three isolates of Bacillus pumilus
were shown capable of degrading BPA. The researchers reported that
these food-derived bacteria would make efficient and safer systems for
the removal of BPA. Logically, the consumption of kimchi (or the
probiotics extracted from kimchi) would enable a human’s
gastrointestinal tract to break down this harmful chemical, as well.

Insecticide Toxicity – Here comes kimchi to the rescue again! In
2009, the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry revealed that the
rather nasty insecticide chlorpyrifos (CP), which has been linked to
neurological effects, developmental disorders and autoimmune
disorders, may be no match for the bacteria that make possible kimchi
fermentation.[3] The researchers found the bacteria in kimchi turned
CP into lunch (a source of carbon and phosphorous) and degraded it
rapidly until day 3 (83.3% gone!) and degraded it completely by day 9!
The superheroes in this story were identified as: Lactobacillus brevis
WCP902, Lactobacillus plantarum WCP931, and Lactobacillus sakei
WCP904. But then things got even more amazing…..

These toxin-muching superheroes were found to degrade four other
insecticides:

Coumaphos - Insecticide
Diazinon
Parathion
Methylparathion

If you think the chemical-munching and degrading abilities of
probiotics are amazing, then consider that probiotics perform
thousands of vital functions within our body, and have been clinically
researched to prevent and/or reduce the symptoms of close to 200
different diseases. You can view the first-hand research on the
benefits of probiotics on GreenMedInfo.com's research page dedicated
to the topic.

Healthy Bacteria Depend on the Health of the Soil, and the Health of
the Soil Depends on YOU
When it comes to good bacteria, it is important to point out that
humans do not live within a vacuum. The quality of the bacteria in our
gut reflects the quality of the food we eat, which ultimately depends
on the quality of the soil.

If you grow your vegetables in raw human sewage (from unhealthy
folks), or factory-farmed animal waste, already preloaded with
antibiotic resistant bacteria and chemicals, there is little hope that
you will receive sufficient beneficial bacteria from that food.

What is more likely is that you will be exposed to highly pathogenic
antibiotic resistant bacteria which have already survived decades
worth of chemical and antibiotic exposure within the human
gastrointestinal tract, or loads of zoological antibiotics used on the
Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO), almost guaranteeing your
own microflora will be continually challenged with unhealthy, disease-
promoting strains of bacteria. This is one of the most disturbing and
unspoken aspects of conventionally produced food, but there are
others: gamma irradiation, bacteriophage-sprays, etc.

Moreover, new research indicates that our increasingly GMO-based
global food production system which depends so heavily on broad-
spectrum biocides like the active ingredient in Roundup "weedkiller,"
namely, glyphosate, is destroying the fertility of the soil.
Essential, and culturally ancient, food-starter bacteria – as used in
fermented foods like cheese and yogurt – are disappearing in certain
regions of the world. The soils have become saturated with herbicides
that are destroying the microbial biodiverisity, without which many of
the foods that we consume would not be possible. When that lifeline to
health which comes from the soil is cut off, our own health is
compromised – perhaps irreversibly.

What does this mean? Planetary health and human health are no longer
separable -- truth is, they never were. We need to move beyond the
concept that we can hermetically seal ourselves off from the
ecological destruction and mass poisoning occurring all around us by
only consuming "organic." If things continue at the pace they are
going, the word "organic" will have no meaning whatsoever – other than
marketing spin. The case of perchlorate accumulation in organic food
makes this problem blatantly clear. In other words, unless we become
activists on this issue, we will lose everything.

I believe one good place to start is to support campaigns such as the
California Right To Know Campaign which will place Right to Know
Genetically Engineered Food Act on the Ballot for Nov. 6th. Learn more

Over two thirds of that iz bullshit. Plants do not take up
antibiotics, or bacteria, and most of the chemicals should be
getting washed off. And these very beneficial consumers of
chemicals, bacteria that you are talking about, operate in
composters. The rest of what wuz written here talks about animal
products which do not concern me.

Okay, so now you're attacking everybody's water processing plant.

Perchlorate isn't stable in organic matter. It's an oxidant. It does
not accumulate. It's a byproduct of nitrate fermentation.

Your dismissive of a serious issue does not stand.

The Colorado River is contaminated with perchlorate at low levels (5-9
parts-per-billion, ppb). Much of the lettuce consumed in the winter
months in the U.S. is irrigated by Colorado River water. Results from
5,650 drinking water sources in California show perchlorate detections
in only 319 sources above the reporting level of 4 μg/L (parts-per-
billion, ppb). However, perchlorate levels of up to 260 ppb were
detected in wells near weapons manufacturing facilities in Sacramento
and Los Angeles counties. Perchlorate has also been detected at levels
of 17 ppb in Lake Mead as a result of releases from two ammonium
perchlorate manufacturing facilities in Nevada. The primary sources of
perchlorate contamination appear to be from industrial and military
operations that use perchlorate as an oxidizing agent. Perchlorate
contamination in water is of concern because of uncertainties about
toxicity and health effects from low levels in drinking water sources,
the impact on ecosystems, and possible indirect exposure pathways to
humans from agricultural and other activities. Anion exchange resins,
microbial-mediated reduction, and phytoremediation are under
investigation as ways to remove perchlorate from contaminated waters.
Phytoremediation is the use of plants to remove both ppb and parts-per-
million (ppm) levels of organic and inorganic pollutants from
contaminated soil and water. Since 1999 research into the ability of
terrestrial and aquatic plants to degrade or accumulate perchlorate
has been reported by several groups including EPA/NERL-Athens. The
Athens researchers observed accumulation of perchlorate in aquatic
species such as blue-hyssop and parrot-feather that suggested that
leafy vegetables such as cabbage and lettuce might accumulate
perchlorate. For these reasons, potential accumulation of perchlorate
in lettuce leaves was identified as one of six high-priority research
needs at the U.S. Air Force’s (USAF) Little Rock Eco Summit in April
1999. This study was part of the work plan of an interagency agreement
between the USAF and EPA to investigate the fate of, and potential
exposures to, perchlorate. This greenhouse study was designed as a
narrow screening-level test to determine the degree of perchlorate
uptake (from fortified nutrient solution) and subsequent accumulation
in lettuce leaves.
The report was submitted for review, consistent with a level 2 EPA
product. Specifically, this report underwent five external technical
reviews, one internal editorial review, and one internal QA review.
Overall, most reviewer comments were calls for more information and
details. Incorporating the requested information produced this
modified report that more clearly communicates the important finding
that lettuce accumulates perchlorate from fortified nutrient solution.
However, follow-up studies will be required before this potential
perchlorate exposure route can be fully characterized. This successful
demonstration of the uptake and accumulation of perchlorate by lettuce
in the greenhouse study is information that other researchers can use
in further research on uptake of perchlorate by lettuce grown under
field conditions. EPA/NERL-Athens concluded research on perchlorate in
June 2002 and does not plan any further research on perchlorate.

I believe it's important to understand that the article I posted
clearly does have potential value to those suffering from psoriasis.
I really don't care to pursue an off-topic adventure that satisfies an
obvious need for attention and interaction. Countering and nullifying
what does appear to be trolling statements of mis/disinformation is
boring to me. It's more important, here, to collectively build a base
of information without the added drama that results from pursuing hard
headed personal debates. Best to avoid taking any stance on the
quicksand of individual matters of opinion.

Dr. Stephen Barrett of Quackwatch Exposed In Court Cases
At trial, under a heated cross-examination by Negrete, Barrett
conceded that he was not a Medical Board Certified psychiatrist
because he had failed the certification exam.

This was a major revelation since Barrett had provided supposed expert
testimony as a psychiatrist and had testified in numerous court cases.
Barrett also had said that he was a legal expert even though he had no
formal legal training.

The most damning testimony before the jury, under the intense cross-
examination by Negrete, was that Barrett had filed similar defamation
lawsuits against almost 40 people across the country within the past
few years and had not won one single one at trial.

During the course of his examination, Barrett also had to concede his
ties to the AMA, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Food & Drug
Administration (FDA).

Subject: Quackwatch Founder Stephen Barrett loses Major Defamation
trial in Hometown

In a stunning development, Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania Judge J. Brian
Johnson on Thursday, October 13, 2005, tossed out nationally known
self-proclaimed ‘consumer medical advocate’ Stephen Barrett’s
defamation lawsuit just minutes before it was going to be considered
by a local jury.

The lawsuit, filed in August 2002, against also nationally known
Pennsylvania chiropractor, lecturer, researcher and publisher, Stephen
Barrett sought unspecified damages against Koren and his company,
Koren Publications, Inc. for statements that he wrote in his
newsletter in 2001 about Barrett.

Barrett, a long-time nemesis of chiropractic, filed the lawsuit
because of Koren’s publication that Barrett was ‘licensed’ and in
trouble because of a $10 million lawsuit and because Barrett was
called a ‘Quackpot’.

In his defense, Koren contended that the statements were true and not
defamatory and that he had a First Amendment right to write them in
his newsletter.

Thursday’s ruling by Judge Johnson represented a major reversal of the
finding of an arbitration in August 2004 wherein a panel of three
local private attorneys reviewing the case had found in favor of
Barrett and awarded Barrett $16,500 in damages and that Koren should
publish a retraction. That award was appealed by Koren.

Dr. Koren was represented by well-known health freedom San Juan
Capistrano, California, attorney Carlos F. Negrete for trial and
Washington, D.C. attorney James Turner of Swankin & Turner. Easton,
Pennsylvania attorney Christopher Reid of Laub, Seidel, Cohen, Hof &
Reid served as local counsel for the team and was co-counsel for the
trial along with Negrete.

Turner and Negrete have been well known for their representation of
clients in the health food, supplement and vitamin industries as well
as representing naturopaths, nurses, dentists, physicians,
chiropractors and complimentary therapists across the country.

Turner’s experience dates back the 1960s when he joined consumer
advocate Ralph Nader and was one of the groundbreaking Nader’s Raiders
that made consumer advocacy popular and brought about significant
changes in manufacturing and consumer protection.

In making the ruling to throw out the case, Judge Johnson granted a
rare directed verdict to the jury finding there was insufficient
evidence to support Barrett’s claims. Judge Johnson indicated that
this case was one of those rare times where such a motion was
appropriate.

Barrett operates the web site www.quackwatch.org , www.chirobase.org
and 20 other web sites and has been a long time critic of chiropractic
calling much of it"quackery".

The victory to chiropractor Koren comes almost 18 years to the date
that chiropractors received national attention with their victory
against the American Medical Association (AMA) by obtaining an
injunction against the AMA from an Illinois federal judge for engaging
in illegal boycotting of doctors chiropractic in Wilk et al vs. AMA.

Barrett had been an outspoken supporter of the AMA at the same time
that Koren had been a vocal advocate that the AMA has, in recent
years, violated the spirit of the federal judge’s order.

After the ruling, Koren proclaimed that: I am overjoyed and
enthusiastic that this nightmare is over and that the science, art and
philosophy of chiropractic and the work of all of my colleagues have
been vindicated.

“This case took a toll on my life and family, but I knew that I was
right in publishing the truth.”

Dr. Barrett has no right to misinform the public about chiropractic
and other natural healing arts or to try to silence anyone who
criticizes him or tell consumers that he is not what he purports to
be.

“I believe that it is not right to be silent when there is a duty to
inform the public and let the truth be told.”

For years, Barrett has touted himself as a medical expert on
‘quackery’ in healthcare and has assisted in dozens of court cases as
an expert. He also was called upon by the FDA, FTC and other
governmental agencies for his purported expertise.

He was the subject of many magazine interviews, including Time
Magazine and featured on television interviews on ABC’s 20/20, NBC’s
Today Show and PBS.

He has gained media fame by his outspoken vocal disgust and impatience
over natural or non-medical healthcare, including his criticisms of
two time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling.

Dr. Tedd Koren is known for his writings and lectures on chiropractic
science, research, philosophy, and chiropractic patient adjusting.

He is known for his Koren Publications chiropractic patient education
brochures, posters, booklets, books and other products that are used
in chiropractors’ offices throughout the United States and around the
world.

Dr. Koren also co-founded a chiropractic college, is on the extension
faculty of two chiropractic colleges, is published in chiropractic and
bio-medical journals and has received numerous awards in his field.
His web sites include www.korenpublications.com and www.teddkorenseminars.com

In his 2001 newsletter, Koren published articles that revealed that
even though he touted himself as a medical expert, Barrett had not
been a licensed physician since the early 1990s.

He also published that Barrett had been the subject of a $10 million
racketeering lawsuit [that had been withdrawn] and called him a
‘quackpot’ for the contradiction of his website and lack of
credentials.

Koren’s trial attorney, Carlos F. Negrete of San Juan Capistrano,
California, is known for his defense of physicians, chiropractors,
dentists, clinics and natural heath providers who practice what is
known as complimentary & alternative medicine and holistic healthcare.
Negrete has also handled groundbreaking cases against HMOs in
California and has represented many celebrities and politicians.

At trial, under a heated cross-examination by Negrete, Barrett
conceded that he was not a Medical Board Certified psychiatrist
because he had failed the certification exam.

This was a major revelation since Barrett had provided supposed expert
testimony as a psychiatrist and had testified in numerous court
cases.

Barrett also had said that he was a legal expert even though he had no
formal legal training.

The most damming testimony before the jury, under the intense cross-
examination by Negrete, was that Barrett had filed similar defamation
lawsuits against almost 40 people across the country within the past
few years and had not won one single one at trial.

During the course of his examination, Barrett also had to concede his
ties to the AMA, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Food & Drug
Administration (FDA).

This was not the first time that Negrete was a trial attorney in a
Barrett case. He also represented anti-fluoridation advocate Darlene
Sherrell in a federal lawsuit filed in Eugene, Oregon by Barrett.

Barrett also lost in trial of that case. Negrete also represented
Robert King of King Bio Natural Medicine of North Carolina and
MediaPower (manufacturers of CalMax and Nu-Zymes) of Maine in cases
filed by an organization led by Barrett, which were lost by Barrett's
organization.

Barrett has also filed a lawsuit against Negrete and his client Dr.
Hulda Clark (author of The Cure for All Diseases and The Cure for All
Cancers) , which is now pending and awaiting trial in San Diego,
California federal court.

After the Koren trial, Negrete stated: “The de-bunker has been de-
bunked. I am pleased and satisfied with this outcome for Dr. Koren and
am proud that Dr. Koren did not succumb to the pressures of the
intimidation of Barrett’s legal wrangling. Not everyone can stand up
to someone as well known as Barrett.”

Negrete continued, “It is another great day for health freedom and
alternative healthcare around the world. I am especially pleased that
this most important victory was in Barrett’s own hometown. It just
goes to show you that there is justice anywhere, even when you are a
visitor challenging the home team.

Barrett is a shill for the medical and pharmaceutical cartels and his
bully tactics and unjustified discrediting of leading innovators,
scientists and health practitioners should not be tolerated.”

Negrete said, “You can be assured that our legal team will be wherever
health freedom advocates and practitioners are being persecuted. The
tide is now turning and people are no long accepting that synthetic
drugs are the only form of treatment are the only way to address
health concerns.

"Every day, consumers are becoming more educated about the benefits of
holistic and alternative methods. This is something that the medical
establishment obviously fears and wants to crush with false
propaganda.”

Koren said that he would now go back to his home in Pennsylvania to
spend more time with his family and continue to write, research, and
lecture on topics concerning chiropractic and healthcare and the
experiences he has gained from this precedent setting legal battle.

He plans to give new lectures to chiropractors across the country who
are under attack or have been subjected to governmental actions.

He also announced that he is forming a new organization aimed at
informing and assisting chiropractors across the country.

The trial started on Monday, October 10, 2005 and ended on October 13,
2005 Barrett was represented by local Allentown attorney, Richard
Orloski.

You are talking about perchlorate in water.
That might be a problem.
Products of perchlorate decompozition (reactions with organic matter
in water) might be a problem.
It iz not a problem in vegetables.
My point iz that it does not bio-accumulate,
and it iz not a threat to organic farming.

If lettuce is the only edible vejtabl that accumulates perchlorate,
then jeneralizing it to "organic food" iz incorrect. I do stand
corrected, though, and in brassica. I wuz surprized.
