I'm doing pretty well dealing with CREST (maybe I should put it this
way - CREST is doing pretty well dealing with ME). Attitude is what
makes a difference in how we might feel. For sure, my attitude almost
went down the tubes before being treated for water on the knee. The
pain was unbearable, but as the area 'drained', I'm pretty much back
on my feet and feeling less and less pain. I started using Advil
(Ibuprofen) as an anti-inflamatory and pain killer. However, it turned
me into a zombie. So instead, I switched over to using Aleve which is
a naproxen based med that I can better handle. Nevertheless, I managed
to keep it's usage to a minimum. While we all hate pain, I for one
don't like the idea of totally killing any pain that I might have.
After all, pain is a defense mechanism that warns us of possible
danger if we put our hand close to a flame or other objects that could
cause us harm. Anyway, I'm in pretty good shape for a guy hitting 66
going further on to age 99 (I add years for my every day bad
behavior). As always, I wish each and everyone good health and
happiness.

Hi there Bob!
Glad to hear the drainage helped. :)
I use Aleve and am pretty happy with it. My right shoulder has started
giving me a hard time so sometimes I put a Lidoderm patch on it and it takes
most of the pain away but I don't have to worry about not feeling *any* pain
in it. lol
I've had an interesting late spring/early summer. I've been having some
chest pains and spent a couple of (separate) nights in the hospital under
observation. They said they were non-cardiac but because of a "weakness" on
the left side of my heart that a doctor in New Jersey told me about I was
given a stress test and an echocardiogram here in Iowa where I now live. The
stress test said I was ok. The echo said I was far from ok. They did an
angiogram June 15th and I found out the echo was wrong. The doctor said I
had the heart of a 20 year old! There is 20% blockage on the left side (the
unspecified "weakness" the Jersey doc undoubtedly detected) but nothing of
immediate concern. He sent me on my merry way. I'm going to look for a
pulmonologist here. I can and do walk a couple of miles. Almost a necessity
since there is no public transportation in this small town though, because
Iowa says each county has to have a hospital, there's one here. The county
seat lost out to us. I get rides to Mason City where I see the neurologist
(seizure disorder predating scleroderma dx) and rheumatologist.
What's funny is I'd started drinking decaf coffee because that's what you're
supposed to do when you have heart trouble. After the angiogram I went back
to regular coffee and the chest pains and SOB I'd been also having have
diminished. Caffeine is a natural bronchodilator which is why I'm thinking
pulmonary. I'm a lifelong asthmatic, have had several bouts of pneumonia
(you *know* I had the vaccine!), had pulmonary histoplasmosis several years
ago and will always test positive, and have mild COPD.
The rheumatologist I've started seeing took me off Plaquenil because he said
I'm stable with the scleroderma and he stood by that decision on a second
visit (I've seen him three times; moved here last September). Downgraded me
from osteoporosis to osteopenia, lowered the synthroid, increased the
vitamin D, and in general says I'm in pretty good shape for the shape I'm
in. Had my esophagus stretched again and have noticed a nice difference.
Less log-jam of rice and fries.
I'm 60 (gonna be 61 in September) and can't complain (though I do lol).
Nell
And may you look forward to many more years of the good life. You're
in my thoughts and prayers.
While I try to manage to do the 'right thing', from time to time I
have to be 'adventurous' and do things that I'm not supposed to do.
"SEZ WHO?" to of those who say "You should...", "You're not supposed
to...", or "Why do you do that?". None of which is in my vocabulary
unless I choose otherwise. 8-)
Just as when I wear a hat that's worn at a rakish angle, my HALO also
must have that rakish tilt to it.
CHEERS TO ALL
BOB D
Hey Bob and Nell, I've been doing pretty well. I've even been doing some
walking in the woods, which is good for me, but doesn't seem like the
dreaded "exercise". ;-) It sure would be boring if all we did was what we
are *supposed* to do. My hat/halo is a bit tarnished, and I've got it on
backwards.
cheers,

I can not tell a lie where I'm a staunch advocate of the use of
medical cannabis. For those like myself with schleroderma who have
limited appetites, 'doobie' enhances the appetite greatly. Thankfully,
states and cities within these states are accepting it as a valid
'medication'. To those who are opposed to smoking it have other
non-smoking options where the active ingredient THC can be baked in
cookies, brownies, brewed into tea and packed into aerosol cans where
a spritz of it can be sprayed under the tongue to provide an excellent
result. My advocacy does not excuse me from being responsible where as
with any intoxicant, never will I get behind the wheel of my car while
buzzed away. Nevertheless, the valid use of medical marijuana is being
accepted at a wild fire rate of speed. As far as my bongs being
considered as being weapons of mass destruction, I say bah humbug.
Being a trumpet playing musician, I can't resist to say that an
accordion has done more damage than any bong could do. 8-)
Amen, brother! My socially retarded state will be one of the last, I'm
guessing.
I think Mr. Chong was refering to his own life when he made that joke; he
was arrested and sent to prision for a ridiculous long time for selling
bongs
on the internet. They tried to make him an "example". Shameful.
Burn one for me! ;-)
dave
For sure I'll burn one (or more) for you, Dave. After all, it's the
Night Before The Fourth in my town (Walpole, MA) What's dumb is that
in California, they can't advertise or sell them as ' bongs'. Rather,
if they advertise and sell them as 'water pipes' or 'tobacco pipes'
(if the pipes are not water filtered) it's OK. It was semantics that
landed Mr. Chong in the jug, In fact, if a customer makes reference to
the 'apparatus' as being a 'bong' or other 'forbidden' terms, the
seller will not serve that person as a customer. Go figure.
As my home state of Massachusetts remains 'Puritanical' about a lot of
things, get this - there's talk about making pot legal across the
board. This would include 'recreational' use as well as for medical
use. Since Massachusetts is broke, there's a lot of tax revenue that
could be added to the coffers if pot was legal. What's more - FINALLY
Massachusetts approved casinos. I don't know all the details, but it's
about time our politicians got their heads out of their collective
butts and got in step with the other states.
