Now I've introduced myself, exactly how common is psoriasis,
anyway............ ?
Don't know if my GP's trying to tell me something, but 6 months ago, I went
to him with 'spots' that started in the armpits and went down the inside of
my arms and the sides of my torso.
He said "all I seem to be seeing at the moment is non-specific skin
conditions" (or words to that effect).
Anyway, gives me some cream (Daktorcote).
Cream doesn't work.
Go back 2 months later (having hoped it might clear itself up and because I
don't like to bother my doctor) with extensive spreading.
Doc says "you've got psoriasis".
Envisaging a Michael Gambon-type scenario (forget the name of the drama), I
say "OH NO!"
Him say "don't worry, it common condition".
Me breathe sigh of (qualified) relief.
Him say "I refer you to dermo", but didn't give me a prescription.
Me think "ah, good"
Some weeks later, dermo say "me see you in 5 months"
Me wonder "surely my GP must have heard of something called a f***ing NHS
waiting-list, why didn't he work on the assumption that I've got psoriasis,
after all - he is my doctor (duh !)"
Anyway, upshot - I write GP (alleged) to say "please assume I have
psoriasis, me want prescription - this thing ain't stopp'n for nobody".
Me now picking up prescription (chemists) tomorrow morning.
Now maybe I'm just being sensitive, but I'm having such a hard time trying
to delude myself that he's never seen a case of psoriasis before.
I know it's probably just paranoia getting the better of me - and he must
see a million different kinds of related things - but even then...... .
Someone please tell me to get a grip of myself and stop being so paranoid.
And the likelihood of a cure.

Find yourself a decent Dermatologist.
Graham
Tell your GP to ask for an urgent Dermo appointment, mine always does and I
am always seen within 5 weeks by the Dermo Consultant.

"Singing Detective" written by ?? Potter himself a long time psoriasis
sufferer. Excellent, made discussions with ordinary people much easier
as they had a point of reference.
Good luck getting to see a Derm!
All the best,

I've seen a LOT of dermatologists, I usually "dump" the ones that
look/talk/act like they're clueless about it. I'm really not afraid of
dermatologist-jumping, suggest that you find a better dermatologist (I
usually dump the ones that look at my psoriasis with disgust.)
I'd really suggest signing up to receive the NPF bulletins. I've really
learnt a lot from them, now I go to my dermatologist and tell her exactly
which medicines I need!!
Good luck!

Hi Nick
I snipped the header to cut out the crosspost to what's supposed to be
a dormant group. For more info about that and why there are 2 groups,
there's a link in the FAQ I publish that can be found on the web at
http://pfaq.cjb.net
Anyway, somewhere in the range of 2-4% of the world population is the
figure usually given. The Brit Psoriasis Association says 2-3 % of the
Brit pop: http://www.paalliance.org/whatisps.htm
May not sound like much but that 2-3% means about 7 million people
here in the US alone.

Well in fairness to him, he is a GP and that's not a very usual
pattern for P to begin to appear like that -much more common to begin
on the scalp or elbow/knee joints. So what he said isn't really
unreasonable.

Might not have known it and he did try what sounds like a topical
steroid which is a pretty common thing to try for P along with other
types of skin irritations.

The thing is that there are other things that can look similar,
especially to a non-specialist and as I said above, yours didn't
appear in a usual pattern for P. Not impossible, just not usual. And
he did give you something that sounds like the topical steroid
(couldn't find daktorcote anywhere BTW. sure about that name?) that
would be a common initial approach for P and a number of similar
looking things.
So yeah, it's really frustrating but it doesn't sound like conspiracy
theory territory.
Best wishes and hope you get things clear soon. You don't mention what
the prescription is for, BTW...

The Psoriasis Newsgroup Resource FAQ can be found at
http://pfaq.cjb.net
but will also be coming soon (twice a month) to a
newsgroup near you...
Thankyou for slapping my hysterical face.
You're quite right, I was being paranoid.
The p. prescription is for Dovonex.
The name of the other one is now a distant, hazy memory.
Thankyou for the initiation and information.
Oh.......and by the way, commiserations on your affliction (also to everyone
else here).
And another thing - how unglamourous is psoriasis anyway.
And why does it think it's so necessary ?
I mean, viruses I can understand - they're trying to make a living.
Bacterial infections aswell........ .
Question : is sun-bathing going to drastically help ? (perhaps a somewhat
irrelevant question, given that I live in England - total sunshine hours
2001: 2.75)
Anyway, I'm off to find a darkened corner to skulk in.
Toodle-ooh
