Just me and my TV and lots of bills to pay - Ostomy Myth 19

As I laid in my hospital bed, fighting to get strong enough for surgery one
of my many fleeting thoughts was, "Well, if I end up with an ostomy I can
stay home and watch television all day." I worried and fretted over how I was
going to be able to pay my bills. Of course I couldn’t go back to work.
Ostomates can’t hold down jobs can they?

Here are a few of the many ostomates in the world. Notice the wide variety of
occupations we hold.

After my surgery (UC & now an ileostomate), the "specialist" (I use the
term lightly), when I asked him about getting on with life and playing
sport, told me to get get a comfortable chair and put it in front of the TV
and become an arm chair sports man. Needless to say, this left me totally
distraught. It wasn't until my GP doctor told me to "get off my arse or
he'd kick it!" that I realised that I had been my own worst enemy by
imposing limitations on my self and not even attempting any of the
activities and sports that used to give me much pleasure. Some of my
activities include a couple of contact sports, as well as other more
peacefull activities.
SCUBA diving (started doing that this month)
Rugby
Surfing
Marathon runs (<20km)
Swimming
Volley ball and beach volley ball
Water Ski
Cycling
Golf (hacker)
Paintball (last weekend - I still have the bruises - ouch!)
Other activities on my to do list include canoeing (white water), snow
skiing, rock climbing (watch out bellow) and hang gliding.

What I would like to say to everyone is don't live according to imaginary
limitations wether they are yours or somebody else's (they are all self
imposed). Try different sports and activities until you find out what is
and isn't suited to you. By using a little common sense, and tapping into
the great wealth of information that this NG has to offer from other peoples
experiences, you will be amazed at what you can do.

I would like to send out a special thanks to Dr Harry Miller of Durban,
South Africa who told me to get off my butt.

Wow, I can't believe that a doctor would give such idiotic advice! He needs
to read Rolf B.'s book, and have it in his office to give to every
up-and-coming ostomate. Someone needs to kick him in the butt. <LOL>

Well, I'm glad you came to that realization, otherwise, we here would have had
to set you straight! <VBG> :o)

Hey, if there was someone who wasn't limited in life, it's you! Keep it up
and you'll squash any and all ostomy myths. Well, maybe not all because I
know one you can't, but it's very gender related. <LOL>

Hey, I know where there's plenty of snow where you can go skiing right now.
All I have to do is walk outside. :o)

Here, here!

See you on the slopes, in the water, on the field, etc., etc.!

More proof that our ostomies only limit us if we allow them to.

Hey, it's easy. All you have to do is eat right (thats 99% of it), stay fit
and enjoy yourself. Try and do some sort of activity; walking, stationery
bike (if you have one) or even isometrics and streching (unbelievably
underated) as often as you can (try once a day) and you will be amazed at
how good it makes you feel.

Or COME ON DOWN to WA (West Australia) and have some fun in the sun. We have
blue skies, 25C and no wind- perfect weather for the beach (maybe a scuba
dive too).

Enjoy your weekend, I will . :-))))))

Pete
PS: remember to start off slow - pace yourself and have fun.
