I was chit-chatting with the doc at the walk-in clinic next door to
the local clog-your-arteries Pizza place ( its all fresh tho ! ) and
he told me a bit of ostomy trivia ( I was there for my flu shot )

Did you know the Queen Mother ( thats Queen Elizabeth of England's
mother ) has had an ostomy for quite a few years ? Anyone know of other
famous ostomates ?

Anyone know of other famous ostomates ?

One of the myths in my myth series has an extensive listing of famous
and not so famous ostomates. I'm re-printing it here for newcomers.

Just me and my TV and lots of bills to pay - Ostomy Myth 19
As I laid in my hospital bed, fighting to get strong enough for surgery
one of my many fleeting thoughts was, “Well, if I end up with an ostomy
I can stay home and watch television all day.” I worried and fretted
over how I was going to be able to pay my bills. Of course I couldn’t
go back to work. Ostomates can’t hold down jobs can they?

Here are a few of the many ostomates in the world. Notice the wide
variety of occupations we hold.

Annie (UK) - senior solicitor (employment law)

Paul Ashley - management consultant

Fred Astaire - actor/dancer

Barbara Barrie - actress

Allan Bawell - drywall hanger

Rolf Benirschke - professional US football player/game show
host/ConvaTec spokesperson

Rescue Team (heavy rescue team)

II, Korea and Vietnam

long term health care facilities

Bill Foy - retired air traffic controller

Gary in Maine - ship captain

Al Geiberger - professional golfer

Serv Gonsalves - Director, Computer Operations & Networks

firm

Services, coordinator of the CCFC IBD Research Network,
educational/inspirational speaker, etc.

Sam (former ileostomate) - marketing management and public guitar
player with an ostomy

The Queen Mum received her ostomy in 1948! She briefly spoke about it back
then (to raise awareness) but of course 'they' never speak about such things
anymore.
Darryl Strawberry had a temp when he had his surgery.
BTW, I met him last June at Gold's Gym in Palm Springs when he was working
out to return to work and told him I was a cancer survivor, too, and he
penned a real nice note and wished me well.

To your list, I want to add one of the most impressive survival stories I
have ever come across.

This guy was not technically an ostomate, but was very amazing nonetheless.

We had hired a crew to come knock down our faulty chimney (developing
cracks throughout!) and build a new one. They had erected a scaffold
around it, and were busily ripping down bricks and carting them away.

In our family, we make it a policy to offer work crews (movers,
construction, etc) lunch or at least cold beverages.

This one guy on the crew always turned us down. One day, I got to talking
with him. Turns out he had had most of his digestive tract shot away in
Vietnam, and he was on full TPN, with one of those ports in his collarbone
and everything. He never ate, and only drank water. At night he went home
and hooked himself up to a pump that gave him all his nutrients. He said
that he could eat food, but it would shoot through him within about 10
minutes, so he did not eat on work days.

This guy was strong, burly, smoked a lot, and worked HARD on hauling those
bricks all day long. I was 15 years old at the time, and I was really
impressed. Meeting this guy really taught me a lesson. Now that I have a
temporary ileostomy, I think of this guy occasionally. When I am not
feeling like doing something or going somewhere, all because of the "bag,"
I remember the construction worker on TPN and remind myself that I am
being foolish.

Thanks Barbara for publishing this. Most of us are at least relative
novices and we can take inspiration from the fact that others have
handled it quite okay.
