It was reported this month that researchers at Jerusalem's Hebrew
University have linked depression to a loss of bone mass and subsequent
osteoporosis and fractures. According to the researchers, the findings
are a big step forward in understanding the interaction of the mind and
the skeletal system, and they have already demonstrated the
effectiveness anti-depressant pharmaceuticals in preventing loss of bone
mass. Loss of bone mass is the leading cause of osteoporosis and bone
fractures among the elderly in general and among post-menopausal women
in particular.
