I was just watching CNBC and they had a story that IVAX Pharmaceuticals was
starting to market Cladribine for the treatment of PPMS. I did an AltaVista
search on Cladribine and it has been known about its effect on PPMS for at
least 18 months. Cladribine is a chemotherapy drug that seems to improve
functioning in PWMS. Does anyone have any information on this treatment? I
am mainly concerned about potential side effects. I have PPMS and I am sick
of every new treatment working on everything but.

IVAX to Develop Multiple Sclerosis Drug

MIAMI (Reuters) - Drug maker IVAX Corp. (AMEX:IVX - news) said on Monday
that it agreed to develop and market cladribine worldwide for the
treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Studies have shown that cladribine showed a reduction in the number and
volume of brain lesions seen on magnetic resonance imaging in patients
with active multiple sclerosis, IVAX said. Multiple sclerosis is a disease
that disrupts communication between the brain and other parts of the body.

IVAX said it is licensing the drug from the Scripps Research Institute.

Cladribine, which was sold under the brand name Leustatin, is a medicine
that is used to treat "hairy cell leukemia," a cancer of the blood and
bone marrow. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ - news) originally developed the
drug.

"Compared to other approved treatments for multiple sclerosis, cladribine
may have important advantages of convenience and tolerance," said
Dr. Stephen Marcus, IVAX vice president of oncology and biotechnology, who
will oversee the clinical development project. The drug can be given
orally and intermittently, he said, which gives it an advantage over
current treatments that involve injections on fixed schedules.
