a bit. we've gone from mid august temps to late november chill.
but the other day i was at detroit's beautiful frederick law olmstead
designed park - belle isle. & the weather was perfect. i was feeling
good. my dh & ddoggy were with me. the freighters were cruising down
the river, the trees were showing their colors, the birds were active,
& the diverse assortment of folks there were all caught in this
wonderful vibe. it was one of those perfect mornings. you know
those moments. everything is right with the world for a little
while. & at this impromptu classic car gathering, this old song came
on - dancing in the moonlight. hadn't heard it for years. but it was
right on.
so that has got me thinking - what's part of the soundtrack of your
perfect moment?

The sounds of cat purr, kid laughter, bird song, and/or wind chimes.
There is no particular soundtrack that beats the above, but there are
songs that have always made me happy to hear them, like Doobie Brothers'
"Listen to the Music", Elton John & Kike Dee's "Don't Go Breaking My
Heart" and Three Dog Night's "Shambala".

The late Pavarotti is a favorite!
For non-opera music, I also love the soundtrack to Blue Man Group. I
crank it up and play it loud until the car vibrates.

Highland Scots were banned from owning them, along with all weapons.

Another recent feel-good fave is the song that closed _The Sopranos_ last
episode, "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey (1981). Although I have to
confess I never would have paid attention to this song if it hadn't been
featured so prominently in that show.
One of Keera's choices, "Shambala" by Three Dog Night, has to be on my top
ten faves of the 70s. *Love* that song (even though I have *no* idea what
it's supposed to be about). The original version by the writer, B.W.
Stevenson, also charted in 1973, but it's not nearly as good IMO.

Yes, ROTS is excellent. Hope ypu can find it! But one of its songs, "Can't
Run But", I used to think of as a sort of filler song. Until I heard him do
it live. Changed my opinion of that song, completely for the better!

ah, thanks cathy. that would explain the amazing breadth across genres
& depth within each musician's songbook.
& since you brought up paul simon, i just heard some of his music on
the radio, which is unusual (must have been birthday related). my
neighbor recently had a yard sale & i realized that i had no simon &
garfunkel on cd, so i bought it & played it for a number of days in
row.
i'm with you - music fits my moods. it's been fun to hear what
people's feeling good songs are. i hadn't thought of some of them in
years. guess i tend to get stuck in a rut.

it. we used to have a great public radio station here, but a couple
of years ago it went all news. so we've been lost & not sure how to

most ways. our radio stations here tend to be smooth jazz, hip-hop/
rap, oldies, mellow pop, & i guess a rock station or 2. nothing i've
heard - the kooks, paolo nutini, feist, etc sounds like it will hold
up over time. & others have that retro vibe - amy winehouse (though
it sounds like she's crashed already, as has lily allen), joss stone.
i dunno - maybe arcade fire?

That happened here, also. At least we still had a commercial classical
radio station. But when they went to all sports last year the public
station decided to go back to classical. Their donations went way up. :-)
When I'm not listening to classical I enjoy Oldies -- Simon and
Garfunkle, Mamas and Popas, Beach Boys, Bette Middler, Go Gos, Donavan,
Rolling Stones, and The Beatles (of course!). But I really love to listen
to Broadway musicals, especially some of the older classics.

acid rock strikes that chord. I've been waiting for my taste in music
to change for 30 years, but it's not happening yet.

We get pretty busy here, but more than half of the trick-or-treaters are
driven in from the more dangerous neighborhoods near ours. Most of them
are older, and there has been a trend in recent years for teens to T or T
with their infants and toddlers. One girl -- who looked as if she was
about 14 when she first showed up -- has a new baby with her each year,
along with the rest of her children.
Anyway, we are the only family on our street that doesn't celebrate
Christmas, along with the requisite decorating, so I go all out for
Halloween so I can give our neighbors something to enjoy the way I enjoy
their seasonal decorating. My preference is to pick up me decorating
supplies in November, when they are 75% off. :-)

You could try Pandora to see if you can find more music you like. You
can put in artists you like, and they offer you other artists based on
your input.
One especially nice thing about it is that you can create different
channels for different moods. I have one that's sympatico with James
Taylor, and another that's a lot edgier.

We get trick-or-treaters here, usually beginning about 3 in the
afternoon. If it's at all a nice day, I take a book and a chair out to
the porch and wait for them. Otherwise, by the time I get down from the
second floor they've gone on to the next house.
Last year I ran out of candy right about the time it started getting too
dark to read and the older kids were coming out. They're not as much fun
as the younger ones, so I just went in and turned off the light. :-)

Showtunes. I don't own any Gershwin, but I enjoy it when it is played on
the radio station. The public radio station used to play musicals along
with classical music, but dropped that long before they went to all-news.
Now they are all-classical. Middle ground is nice. :-)

I can see I'm missing a lot of fun with those trick-or-treaters. The
last 35 years I've lived in places that are too isolated to get any.
Speaking of kids traveling to the good neighborhoods Halloween
night...I recently lived near the Marine Mountain Warfare Training
Center. The housing for the base was the only place in the vicinity
where people lived close enough together for feasible trick-or-
treating. They'd stop everyone on the way in and extract two bags of
candy before they'd let them in. I guess it's surprising they'd let
the public in at all.
Jette mentioned Motorhead way back there. Lemmy rules! Love that
wicked laugh. Aren't you in Norway? If you like Motorhead, you'll
like Opeth, from Sweden, if you don't already. And do you know about
Nightwish, from Finland--heavy metal with a woman opera singer.

Depends. IMO.
At this house I get about 80 trick-or-treaters, from ~5:30 - 8:00ish, with
the rush being between 6 - 7:30. It's impossible to get anything done that
evening - the doorbell rings constantly. It's even difficult to get to
pee - I've been halfway up the stairs (one bath, on second floor), when...
the doorbell rings. Yet again.
When I lived in a garden apt. I got 15 trick-or-treaters, max, & used to be
disappointed. Ha! Now wish I got only that many... I'll gladly send you
*least* half of mine!
OTOH, I have to say that they're virtually all polite & say "Thank you" -
even the teens.

OK, so because i rarely watch TV and never listen to the radio,
there are all these artisits that others have heard half to death but
i never knew about. A friend in another group just pointed

good morning, karen. i see you've moved the big kitty & are now up &
about. i could have sworn i posted last night...
after seeing the posts on halloween, i guess its my neighborhood & not
the holiday. we also get people driving kids in from more dangerous
neighborhoods. but after 13 years here, i can say that it has been
less fun each year & more expensive to participate, so more & more
homeowners don't ( & some don't for religious reasons).
i get annoyed with the adults who beg not only for themselves but for
all the 'sick' children that couldn't make it out. then there is the
too old/no costume subgroup. last year i happened to make chicken
stock that day & so i saved the chicken feet & put them on a platter.
when the aforementioned slackers/beggars showed up, i explained my
halloween rules - no costume=no candy. then i offered them some
chicken feet. they took one look at that plate & flew off the porch,
some not even hitting the steps. not one of them argued about it.
that worked way better than offering them unpopular vegetables.
but it takes the fun out. i have fond memories of halloween & like to
put up some fun spooky stuff.
but one cool thing that i stumbled on last year while doing 'angel
patrols' was this amazing installation done by these 3 mentally &
physically disabled brothers who are probably in their 50s. the
community kind of looks out for them; their dad was disabled & died a
few years ago. they love spooky/scary stuff & they put up this
display that extends across their 3 side by side houses. most of it
is from early horror films - they have this incredible base of
knowledge for this stuff. & they use these old old mannequins to put
the costumes/old masks on. it's their most exciting day of the year &
they are so proud - & rightly so. even the hoodlums respect it.

Tina Turner came across as a "force of nature." Like a tornado on the
stage. So beautiful, talented, strong and powerful.
And she changed my life, in another way.
When I found out, years later, that *she* had been abused, I was finally
able to admit out loud that I had been abused by the dopefiend I was married
to for 13 years. I was ashamed of it before--what kind of a weakling lets a
man beat on her? But suddenly I saw that if a goddess like Tina could be a

There's lots of happy soul music. "Love And Happiness" by Al Green comes to
mind. "Midnight Train To Georgia" by Gladys Knight & The Pips is a song
about turning failure into happiness. "I'm A Happy Man" by The Jive Five is
self-explanatory. "Do I Love You, Indeed I Do" by Frank Wilson was never
issued by Motown, but it's now the #1 record of the "Northern Soul" culture
in the UK--it's a very joyous record. But, like we used to say, different
streaks for different freaks--either it grabs you or it doesn't.

it while on the computer in the basement while I was sewing. Whatever was
popular 10-15 years ago.
I spent a lot of time driving YD to gymnastics practice, and she kept the
car radio on to 'her' stations. I got to where I knew some of the songs
well enough to sing along, which encouraged her to turn them off. :-) The
first time I heard Weird Al's version of _Lose Yourself_ I was laughing

Are you kidding me? That chicken feet stunt is PERFECT for Halloween! I
mean, the best ones I remember are the ones where we really did get

Something _very_ upbeat. Something I can get lost in. I don't have sad
music. It doesn't interest me, no matter what mood I'm in. After the
death of a loved one, though, I find all sorts of miserable love songs

Nightwish's singer has a lot of opera training and makes Pat Benatar
sound like Janis Joplin (not that I dislike Janis). It's more hard
rock than heavy metal; many songs are melodic. I recommend their
albums "Highest Hopes" and "Once".

Benatar, too, was classically schooled, but opted for rock. In the 70's,
girls were supposed to sound a bit raw.
