Her photo is on the new, & old, picture sites. Her name is Jess & I've had
her for over 15 years & she is my life.

She's very very ill. She has founder, which is a very serious hoof condition
& is the 2nd leading cause of death in horses. She foundered because, we
recently discovered, she has hypothyroidism. She hasn't left her corner of
the barn for nearly 2 weeks because her front feet are too painful for
walking. I feed & water her where she is because she can't make it 8 feet to
the water bucket. Right now, I'm giving her all the meds & doing everything
I can; it's now just a waiting game. This has been going on for a few
months, but recently became acute, which is why I haven't been around much.
I sometimes sleep in the barn. Actually, I think everyone can relate to
this; the lining inside the hoof wall is connective tissue, which is called
the 'white line' in horses. When this tissue becomes inflamed, from a myriad
of reasons, it causes pain. Much as a joint would, only with a hoof in this
case, there's nowhere for the swelling to go. It causes immense presssure,
throbbing, excrutiating pain. When the inflammation starts to subside a bit,
the 'white line' is pulled away from the hoof wall, now unsupportive of the
coffin bone running down inside the hoof, making it possible for it to fall
completely thru the bottom of the hoof. End of story.

Please pray for Jess.

<gentle snip>

Candi..

currently going through a rough time with my 9.5 y.o. dog-ter, Bayta.
It's heartbreaking and sometimes I just want to lie down next to her
and cry for hours on end but she doesn't understand that.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Candi,
I know the seriousness of that condition. You must be so terribly upset. I
hope things go well for her. I do know of a horse around here who made a
very good recovery.

Candi, I can give you some information on this. I experienced this with my
daughter's horse. He got into some whole grain corn and foundered big time.
Took almost 2 years to get him back to normal. The most important thing is
to get that heel pressed up either with a shoe or have a farrier to trim his
toes off to take the pressure off of that area. Also watch for abscesses.
They can happen. If I had been able to get to a farrier sooner Ole Dan would
probably recovered sooner. We had to keep his feet dry because of the
abscesses and keep him in a stall for a while. I also had to give him
antibiotic shots too. How old is she? And how heavy? When it first happened
with Dan he was so swollen you could not even see the shape of his legs from
the knees down. I had to soak his feet in sub zero weather with cold water
and he made steam because his feet were so hot. What are they doing about
the hypothyroidism? Never heard of it in horses.
Keep me posted.

She's still the same, MAYBE a bit better. With founder, there's a 'white
line' of connective tissue about 1/4 " thick (got everyone's attention?)
that surrounds the inside of the rounded hoof wall that becomes inflamed,
same as with lupus. After the inflammation has subsided, which can take
months, they xray the foot to see how far the coffin bone (it goes thru the
center of the hoof & becomes disconnected from the tissue holding it in
place) has been allowed to dislocate. If it's a certain degree of
dislocation, there's nothing to be done. This is what Man o'War died from.
We've got a few weeks before the xrays because she's still at the acute
stage & the inflammatory process is still going on. There's nowhere for the
swelling to go inside a hoof & it's excruatingly painful. We've giving her
the max dosage of antiinflamitories for a horse without killing her liver.
But, my vet discovered that she has hypothyroidism, which could have
metabolically caused the founder, but the thyroid meds they take a few
months to take effect.

Thank you so much for asking.

I cry when I feed her, because she can't walk 3 feet to her food & water.

That is so sad Candi. I know how hard it must be to watch her in such pain.
It would break my heart too. I am hoping for a good outcome.

Oh Candi how I feel both yours and Jess's pain!
I am sure the group, like me, is rooting for her to get better and
praying to the supreme being of all horses to give her back her good
health so she can run once again, hopefully with you on her back!
HUGS for you both from me, Shelagh

Jess came out of the barn today (she's on 24 hour turnout which means the
door is ALWAYS open if she wants to come out. She came out to graze 4 times
today so I take that as a very good sign! It's only been 3 months since
she's been able to walk 20 ft. to the door, & then go outside. She hasn't
been able to walk 6 feet to her water bucket, so I move it around.
