My son is 6 years old, in first grade. He has ADHD and multiple learning
disabilities. At the suggestion of a neuropsychologist, they are using
the "Orton-Gillingham" reading approach which involves lots of multisensory
input and a phonetic, rather than a whole-language approach.

Well, this is absolutely *terrific* for him, and I'd recommend it to anyone.
He has gone from not even knowing all his letters at the end of the summer
to being able to read and write a number of three letter words, and use
them in a sentence.

My daughter has been tested &diagonsed with mutiple learning disabilities
as well. She is 7 years old. We live in long beach N.Y. where tutors
are available whom have studied this method. One of the instructors has
advised me that the "orton -Gillingham " method is available on CD ROM
This would be so helpful to my daughter & I if only I were able to find
out where to purchase it...I find that her tutors are very explicit in adhere-
ing to this method of learning, aand I feel that any intervention on my
partthat is not conforming with the same structure , must do more harm than good
in the area of confusing her...
Congradulations on starting a group that I can finally take seriously.
Please advance any info you might find on the aforementioned CD ROM
thankyou in advance

We had our son in a Slingerland Method school for the 3-6 grades.
Slingerland is an adaptation from the Orton-Gillingham reading method. I
would also agree that for my son the results were wonderful. The
multisensory input made the difference. The small class size and a
school that "really" understood these children also payed a large part in
the good outcomes.
