I am a 25 year old male who has recently been diagnosed with kidney
disease. I do not yet need a transplant or dialysis, however, I want to
understand all of my options and any opinions regarding the different
types of dialysis or a transplant would be appreciated. As it stands
right now I am leaning towards a transplant, however I just began the
tissue typing that is necessary before I am put on the transplant list. I
am very active and in good shape and health otherwise. Any opinions,
suggestions, or personal stories would be very helpful.

I am a 39 year old female with recently diagnosed kidney disease. My
specific disease is Chronic Tubulointersitial Nephritis. I too will need
either dialysis or transplant in the future. I am currently on a low-
protein Renal Diet.
Does anyone have any advice?

There are a couple mailing lists you can subscribe to--one is a dialysis
list and one is a transplant list. At the very least you need to
subscribe to the dialysis list. A transplant is not a cure and there is
no guarantee that you will not have to go on dialysis while waiting for a
kidney. Also, a successful transplant is considered a tx (tx=transplant)
that lasts 1 year or more. There are some people out there who have had
their tx for over 20 years, and they are becoming more common. But there
is always a chance that you will reject. There are plenty of people who
have had multiple transplants and have been on dialysis for 20+ years.
Find out all you can, and welcome to the club. You will find use kidney
people very supportive of each other, for the most part.

To subscribe the the dialysis list, send e-mail to:

list...@mail.wustl.edu

In the body of the letter type:

Subscribe Dialysis yourname

put your name or screen name or userid in place of your name. For example,
I would put

Subscribe dialysis LadyRain1

I'm not sure of the spelling of the transplant list, but it is put out by
the same people and you can get the info after you subscribe to DIALYSIS.
Hope this is of some help to you.
