They are either trying to create more drag by wearing a looser suit on top, or
trying to be a bit more modest.

could be homo-paranoia which must be related to homosexual-panic.
Maybe they're afraid somebody is going to photograph them and their
basket and/or asshots will wind up on a binaries newsgroup.
I was on several teams. Most of the guys wore two speedos or a jock under
one pair to give additional support OR to help with the problem of obvious
excess endowement. I, myself, prefered a jock under a pair of speedos.
you think someone would be as low as to post a nice basket shot on the
internet?
Wearing two speedos, on the other hand, is quite common-- as the one gentleman
replied for more drag when training and, arguably, for some, more modesty.
However, most guys you see wearing two speedos are water polo players trying to
give their balls some extra protection. Water polo is a very tough, rough
sport, both above and below the belt.
Concerning modesty, it is interesting to note about a speedo that the looser it
is the more it shows. So many high school kids think the opposite, buy a bigger
one thinking it will show less, when the tighter it is the less obvious things
are.
<<What jive. No serious swimmer wears a jock under a speedo these days, and few
ever did. Leg straps always hang out . .Jock/speedo combo is strictly for guys
into jocks,,>>
When I was in HS, Speedos were made of nylon (Lycra hadn'tbeen invented) and
more than 50% of the guys on the team wore a jock under their suit, including
myself. Coach didn't tell us to, but everyone did. I figured it was part of
the deal, since it both worked for comfort and to keep my teenage hard-on under
control. I liked the way it felt and looked, . Maybe that's why I still like
jocks and subscribe to this newsgroup.
Guys wore their Speedos much baggier than they do today. The good news was
that is covered more, so the jock could stay somewhat hidden, although leg
straps always seemed to pop out, and you could see the jock outline under a wet
suit. The bad news is that while a tight Speedo can act as its own jock, a
baggy one won't work for support, making an under layer more important. I
finally weaned myself away from wearing a jock under my Speedo by wearing 2
Speedos - with a smaller sized one under the one that "fit" according to the
standards of the day.
I have to agree. I wore a jock under my nylon suit which predated
lycra, back in the 60's. It is hard to know just why "the other guys"
wore one too, as to whether it was for support or for modesty (I don't
recall that you went around asking, "Hey, why are you wearing a jock?"
in the locker room. I think, as I recall, about perhaps 1/3 of the high
school boys wore a jock back then, and perhaps a few percent less in jr
high.
I wore it for modesty, as instructed by my father who presented me with
one after I started wearing that type of suit. In fact, I posted the
story of this a month or so ago, so if anybody missed it, let me know
and I can repost it.
> Guys wore their Speedos much baggier than they do today.
This was all the more reason some of us needed the jock for modesty.
The guys who didn't wear the jock often tented out of their suits (even
without those annoying teen hardons). Anybody remember that tenting
problem with the loose nylon suits?

I don't remember having a real problem with that in my old suits.
And I think the original poster was correct in that today, you never see
a jock under a Speedo suit.

I remember that tenting problem ... in fact I MISS that tenting
problem; I really find that sexy--especially on men with particularly
prominent cock heads, which show through the nylon in a revealing, yet
modest, way.
In fact, I'm trying to find a supplier of some of those older style
nylon suits, for nostalgic (and other) reasons. If anyone knows where I
can get any, I'd appreciate the information!!
I've not seen nylon suits in the stores in at least 10 or 15 years.
Here are 3 possible sources. Two have web sites and the third does not
appear to, yet it has the best selection of nylon suits of all:
Metro Swim Shop 800 526-8788
http://www.members.aol.com.metroswim/index.html
USA Aquatics 800 445-8721 (eastern US) or 800 882-8721 (western US)
http://www.usaquatics.com
And this 3rd one has more brands and styles in it: World Wide Aquatics
800 726-1530 or 800 543-4459. I didn't see any reference to a web site
in their catalog. Check out the suits under section for men's fitness
you will see the styles available in nylon. Check out the water polo
suits and the Ocean products in this catalog, besides being nylon they
are probably what you're looking for. Just remember to get it on the
large size if you want a good tent effect like we had in the old days.
I tented and my dad got me my first jock strap (within a week or two of
wearing the suit) and told me to wear it whenever I wore the suit, so my
tenting days didn't last long. But it was good for me because I
couldn't control my hardons too well at 14 or so, and there was no room
for error in those suits. Just seeing some of the other guys tenting
their suits would set me off. Anybody else have that "problem"??
dave
I ended up making my own swimsuits, unable to find nylon anymore. It's
a big factor to me, since nylon doesn't break down under pool chlorinator.
Any "better" yard goods store should sell nylon in various colors.

I'm told teenage girls like to purposely flirt with guys so attired
to get a reaction and embarass them, just for kicks.
I wonder how the boys feel dressed like that. When I was a teenager,
there'd be no way I'd go out in public in something that clingy. I
think a couple of them had on two suits, perhaps for extra modesty.
(Indeed, I wouldn't do that now, of course there's more a stomach
sticking out to deal with.)
J.
They are much more bikini style than when I was on the high school and
college swim teams in the 60's and early 70's. Ours were 100% nylon
then and perhaps half of us wore a jock under. Today the boys do not.
The suits today at nearly 100% lycra or at least 75-80% lycra.
I help with coaching the H.S. swim team of which my daughter is a
member. I can tell you a lot of boys do not want to come out because
they have to wear speedos. My daughter's boyfriend is one who will
not. So one day we were riding in the car and the topic came up. I
asked him why he wouldn't wear the speedos and he said he doesn't even
like to wear shorts. So I pressed the point and said something like are
you just self conscious or do you think you can't control yourself well
enough to wear a speedo? I know (especially in front of my daughter) he
would probably opt for the safe answer which he did (and he probably
would have even if she were NOT there since he would probably not be
comfortable admitting that to me even if it were true).
Then there are a fair number of boys who wear shorts over their speedos
and take them off just seconds before their event and as soon as they
are out of the water, the shorts are back on. Some won't even stand up
straight on the starting blocks (are they afraid of showing, getting
hard, who knows). Many of these guys should be proud of their bodies,
but they just want to hide.

We were at a district meet a few weeks ago and our star swimmer had his
girl friend along. They were playing around a bit on a bench and when
he got up he had a pretty good semi going and acted like he didn't even
know it! I have to assume that it doesn't take much stimulation for
boys of that age to lose their very small amount of control.
Frequently, several are running a small semi.

Some of ours wear 2 suits at practice I think more for drag (perhaps for
modesty) but rarely at meets. Why wouldn't you wear a suit like this
for swimming on the team? There is "safety in numbers" so to speak.
You're not out there alone. And in the old days, some guys who wore the
nylon suits too loose actually showed much more with tenting than these
guys do today with the tighter lycra suits.

When I was a teenager -- starting right around the Mark Spitz craze --
Speedos became real popular. At our neighborhood pool, almost all the
boys started wearing them. Only a small number wore jocks.
One of the things I remember about those suits were that when guys got
out of the water the fabric would cling to the body, clearly outlining
everthing. Most guys soon learned the habit of quickly tugging at their
crotch to pull in some air the moment they reached deck. But you had to
be careful; too much air and you looked like you were wearing a
balloon. This could be rectified with a quick squeeze with both hands
against the abdomen.
There was one guy who eventually joined the swim team and became an
excellent swimmer -- he was overly tall for his age, and very thin. His
musculature defined "sinewy". He was clearly far more well endowed than
any other guy. He liked to wear overly large suits, and in a wet suit
his cock was supported at an almost completely horizontal angle. I can
still picture his out-of-the-pool ritual today: standing tall, dripping
wet, and using both hands to carefully pinch the fabric just on either
side of his cock, slowly pulling it out so as to not take in too much
air too soon, and then lovingly patting the fabric back down. And then
there's when he started to become a diver, slowly bouncing at the end of
the board....
One of the guys who did wear a jock was my best friend at the time,
Brian. He was hung almost as much as the skinny guy. But his mother
insisted he wear a jock. He always wore it with his cock facing out and
down, producing the maximum possible bulge. I remember junior and
senior year lifeguarding with him, and staring at that bulge for hours
..... Unfortunately, while we were best friends, I never got the nerve
to act on my attraction. It has been a regret ever since...
Anyway, I'm attaching a picture that I found on some web page somewhere
that got me started thinking about these things. I hope you enjoy it.
The chest and musculature look a little like mine as of a few years ago;
unfortunately, too much business travel and time away from swimming have
taken their toll. But this picture (which I have as my desktop on my
home Mac) has been motivating me to get back into the pool more
regularly.

I found that most really good swimmers were either a bit exhibitionist
or so focussed on the psychological aspects that something like
"modesty" didn't ever occur to them. However, whatever other reason
they gave, I think the jockstrap and 2-suit phenomena were mostly about
modesty for the guys who did that. As a high school freshman, I wore a
jock with my first speedo for about two weeks, but soon gave it up for
two reasons: the straps always started peeking out of the seams in back
(which invited strap-snapping by other swimmers), and most other guys
didn't bother with a jock -- and if they could do it, so could I. I
quickly got over any embarassment I might have felt -- especially since
it felt so much better "hanging free."
Naw, I just got the "Dad" drawn out, right on the spot.

I remember very well. In fact, a lot of us used to wear speedos to the
beach, and all the time to the park pool, etc. They were commonly worn
in the 60-70's. And only a few guys wore a jock. Those who didn't
showed a fair amount. And I have to believe any boy wearing that type
of suit outside the strict confines of the swim program had to know he
was showing something! Earlier nylon ones which I wore in the 60's
through jr and sr high school, as I posted elsewhere in this NG were in
some ways more revealing than the modern suits. Some of us wore jocks,
some didn't. A lot of guys wore them loose and there was some pretty
good tenting going on (even though we didn't know what we called it
then). My dad got me a jock to wear under the suit and told me to wear
it, but once in a while I didn't wear it just because I WANTED to show
off. I didn't get any answers to that as to whether other guys LIKE to
show it off back in high school. I had to be careful when I did that,
because I knew I was doing it to show off, and I was also aware it was
easy to pop one.

It's just part of the sport. Once the guys get into it, it's not that
big of a deal.

Yes, I know. It was only about 100 years ago when I was that age!
Doesn't like shorts? Today's shorts for kids are so big and baggy they're
almost like trousers.

Yes, seen that a lot.

Maybe you don't remember what it was like at that age. A lot of guys
are very self-conscious and don't feel like parading it around.
I think they ought to ease up on such revealing bathing suits for
the kids--make them less revealing. Swim club teams are not the
Olympics and that big a deal that a little extra drag will matter.
