I can't remember if I posted this or not, but it's sort of interesting,
since some of of us use Prelief and find it actually helps. I'd like to hear
whether it helps you all or not, and which foods it helps with if any. This is
a snip for the University of Calif. Berkeley School of Public Health's
"Wellness Letter", October 1997.
In a short article on heartburn relief products, they say this about Prelief
(calcium glycerophosphate):

"To see if Prelief does what it claims, we tested it at the School of Public
Health, using eight common beverages and a standard pH monitor to measure
changes in acidity. We added the powder, as directed, to tomato, lemon,
orange, and apple juice, as well as milk, coffee, tap water, and bottled water.
It had virtually no effect on the juices (the most acidic drinks), even after
a second packet was added. The only significant effect was on coffee, which
rose from a pH of 5.2 to 6.3 (7 is neutral)." It's really strange that it
seems to work only on coffee, at least in this test-tube trial. I haven't
tried Prelief yet....Anybody find it helps them with decaf coffee???

I've never tried Prelief as recommended. I take it as I would Pepcid
and it has helped me.

As for the coffee, the others in my IC group prefer a product called
Coffee Tamer. They just about swear by it.

Take care!!

I find the fact that the medication you mention has calcium very interesting.
The last time I saw the urologist I was telling him how fast baking soda works
- in about 20-30 minutes. He thought that was too fast for it to be working
through the GI system, kidney and bladder. My main IC symptom is urethral
spasms and he thought the baking soda might be working by calcium getting into
the blood and then the pelvic floor muscles. He said that would happen more
quickly than it going through the digestive sysem, etc. I guess I can check
that out by measuring the ph of the urine at more frequent intervals after I
take baking soda. But I thought his comments were interesting in the context
of your comment.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have urethral spasms and burning, and I notice baking soda works
rather quickly for me, too. I take about 8 Rolaids (with calcium) during
the day and would think that I have plenty of calcium in the pelvic area
at any given time. I notice more spasms when I drink more than 2 cups of
coffee a day or eat chocolate, even though I take Rolaids with them, so
your doctor's explanation puzzles me. Could it be that soda diffuses
into the bloodstream from the stomach bypassing the digestive tract?
