CHEERIO,
I've just started using an herbal remedy/vitamin called Quercetin - I guess
the "famous" version of it is Prosta-Q, but I just buy my version from the
health food store. It has bromelain in it (I guess that helps the Quercetin
get into your system, it's not easily digested without it, I've heard.)
Anyway, I know it's probably too soon to really recommend this stuff,
because maybe all I'm experiencing is a placebo effect or just a
coincidence, but....for what it's worth - this Quercetin stuff really seems
to be helping me a lot so far. And it worked really quickly, too - the way
you would expect an antihistamine to, you know?
I've been taking two 500 mg capsules 3 times a day for 3 days now. There
are some of articles/studies about Quercetin that say it works for a fair
percentage of IC patients and chronic prostatitis patients (guess it's
pretty much the same disease.) So, maybe what I'm experiencing is real,
after all, and not just a coincidence or placebo or something.
I've had IC for about a year now. Mostly just an irritated urethra/bladder,
feeling like I have to pee all the time, day and night. No significant
pain, though, and no bleeding. I've tried DMSO, bladder hydrodistention
(helped me for a few weeks) and some other stuff like antihistamines, herbs,
tagamet (which helped some, but not as much as the Quercetin.) I also tried
ditropan, which didn't seem to do anything for me one way or another that I
could tell.
Anyway, this stuff is probably about $30.00 for a month's supply (3 bottles
or so) depending on what brand you get....maybe just start out with one
bottle....heck, if you're like me, $10.00 is a reasonable amount to spend on
something that might help. And you should know by the end of the one bottle
if it's going to help you or not. As far as I know, there aren't any side
effects.
From what I was reading, Quercetin seems to act in three ways - one, it's
anti-inflammatory (always a good thing, with the inflamed bladder thing we
IC'ers have going!), two, it's an antihistamine of sorts (but it makes my
bladder feel soothed instead of bad) and three, I guess it has some
anti-bacterial action (which is good just in case IC is caused by some
bacteria we don't know about...)...
Some people have been using Quercetin as an herbal remedy for hay fever.
Anyway, it might be worth it for you to give it a try....if you're like me,
you're willing to try anything that isn't likely to harm you, and doesn't
cost overly much....
I hope it works as well for you as it has for me so far...
These last couple of nights, I only have to get up to use the bathroom maybe
twice, instead of the 8 or 9 or more times I usually get up. I've gotten
better rest these last couple of nights than I have for all this year prior
to that. I really do believe the Quercetin is helping me. My bladder feels
almost normal again, like 99% back to normal.

I've heard anecdotal evidence that some people are helped with oral MSM or
with glucosamine sulfate. I've tried both of those and they haven't helped
me, but I'm only one person. It seems like for many of us, we have to just
try one thing after another until we find the magic remedy.

Avoid foods such as
citrus
bananas
spices
Soft drinks
alcohol
CAFFEINE
most NUTS
This should help alleviate a lot of your symptoms.

Have you tried the I.C. diet? That seems to help a lot of us. If you go to
the ICA website www.Ichelp.org they have a comprehensive list of medications
that may be helpful.
I have had some success taking Doxepin a tri-cyclic antidepressant used for
pain and frequency. I don't know if that would raise your blood pressure.
