I am a fit healthy 64 years old. I have a regular program of light
exercise.

On 4/23/08 after my 20 daily push ups (I have been doing them for
years) I noticed a tender area on my right groin (ingle) about two
inches to the right of my penis. There were no bumps or swelling.
There was no pain when waking or on any position of my legs, but the
area was a little sore to the touch. The tender are extended about 1
inch around the central sore spot. Next day a did three push ups,
three seat ups, and ran lightly for 15 minutes which caused no pain. I
remained sore to the touch for two days and after the pain was
completely gone.

On 4/24 I saw my GP who said I had a pre-hernia condition and advised
me to take it easy. However, he could not give precise advise about
exercise.

Should I limit lifting heavy items on regular life activities (I do
not lift weighs)? If so to what weight limit? For how long?
Is this condition likely to become an emergency one? Should I avoid
travelling or camping away from hospitals?
Should I decrease my non-competitive exercise routine – twenty daily
push ups, sixty daily sit ups, jogging 10 Km twice a week, biking for
3 hours once a week, walking or hiking for 4 hours once a week,
canoeing for 4 hours once a month? For how long?

Are there any exercises I can do to prevent the hernia?

I went to doctor who is a Sports Specialist and he said

Limit to 10 lbs. l. Could not ay for how long.

No need to avoid travel and camping. Go to emergency if there is a
sharp pain.

Decrease activities specially push ups and seat ups for 4 weeks. Then
I can do all the same as before but decrease if there is pain.

No

I also went to see a sports physiotherapist who said

>Should I limit lifting heavy items on regular life activities (I do

Continue normal daily lifting. Contract muscles area 4 when lifting
and keep breathing. No need to contract for lifting items under 5 lbs

Continue my exercise routine. When doing push ups exhale when pushing
up or bending up.
Contract core muscles when doing push ups and seat ups. Relax muscles
area 4 on down position.

Contract the muscles in area 4 for 5 seconds several times a day. I
can do this when walking, seating or lying down.
Do the bridge exercise 12 times a day. Lying on my back with my legs
bent (the feet flat on the floor about 12" from my bum) contract the
are 4 muscles. Lift the bum up as high as it can go slowly, hold on
the high position for 5 seconds and return to floor slowly. Then relax
area 4 muscles and repeat exercise.
This may not stop the hernia but may help prevent it.
