I took treatment for 6 months, and was told I was a non responder. I was
encouraged to wait for telepravir and sent home to wonder....
I hope to start with another Dr. after the new year.
I guess I have never been clear on a simple thing, and wondered what you
all would say.
When I asked what I should take for headaches, I was told to take
nothing but tylenol. I doublechecked at a later date, because I had
always heard tylenol was bad for the liver.
Recently I had a reg check up with my GP, and told him what my liver Dr
said, and again asked if I should take tylenol...he said, tylenol was
indeed bad for the liver, but gave me a referral for someone new, and
never answered my question.
What can I take for headaches?
TIA, Cindy
Here's what my gastro told me: Tylenol (acetamophen) is indeed bad for the
liver, as is every NSAID (ibuprophen, aspirin etc.). But, providing the
recommended daily dosage is not exceeded, it's the least harmful of all and
shouldn't do any significant damage. I took it throughout my treatment, as
directed, and as far as I know, I'm none the worse for it.
Sorry to hear you didn't have any luck with treatment. Here's hoping your
new doc has a new plan that wins the prize for you.
Same recommendations were given to me (g1b, stage 2-3, grade 3). Staying under
2 grams of acetaminophen per day - TOTAL from ALL sources - and don't add
alcohol to the equation (which, at Stage 3, probably isn't news to you) puts
one in the statistical outcome group that avoids hepatotoxic effects.
2g is half the current US FDA maximum recommended daily dosage. That said, a
US FDA advisory panel in June of 2009 recommended lowering the 4 g/day maximum
- but amazingly was not asked to provide - nor did they offer - an actual new
limit, leaving that to someone else to define.
I was fortunate enough to only need one 500mg Tylenol taken just before Friday
Nite Shots and another taken first thing Saturday morning, through pretty much
the whole 48 weeks on treatment. No apparent adverse effects.
The problems with NSAIDS manifest in blood components - primarily platelet
depression. That can be problematic when the liver is already under siege from
the virus.
Sorry to hear about your previous treatment attempt, but hopefully Telaprevir
or Boceprevir will lead to success on a future attempt. The trial numbers for
both are very encouraging, and the former may well be available by the end of
2010...
Cheers

Whoops - left out the words "the other" in this sentence:
>The problems with >the other< NSAIDS manifest in blood components - primarily platelet
>depression. That can be problematic when the liver is already under siege from
>the virus.
Cheers

Per my gastro, I always take Tylenol. I never take anything until I just
can't stand it any more though. I'll battle a headache all day before I
take anything.
