Most people don't know for sure.
When I was diagnosed, I believe I had had mine for between 17 and 29
years. This assumes it was caused by sharing needles. Impossible to
pinpoint it more accurately than that for me. Of course, there is a
slim chance that there was another cause which would make the above
estimate invalid.
For most people, it's almost impossible to determine exactly when HCV was
acquired. For example, being exposed to tainted blood from a hospital and
subsequently notified of this does not eliminate the possibility that the
person had already been infected with hep C.
