After posting info to another OT about killing and dismantling meese
(I'm on the other side of the Earth and this seems the right plural),
I have been thinking about the way that the Alaskan Government
recommends that meese be killed. They weigh about half a ton and their
hearts must be enormous. Yet the recommended killing method is a 'lung
shot'.

During WW11 it became fairly well known in this part of the world that
Yanks were not real accurate with shooting - hence the tommy gun. But,
for goodness sake, how could anyone miss a moose heart which is about
as big as a human torso?

In Oz we have a lot of sheep and one problem the sheep have here is
blowfly strike. I remember as a child seeing the way maggots had made
their homes in the posteriors of these animals and an operation was
developed (called the Mules Operation) to render the relevant area
fleece-free and so strike-free.

So a mob of frenzied Yanks mounted a campaign against Oz wool because
of the 'inhuman' Mules Operation. Everyone of them (the Yanks I mean)
were beef/mutton eaters - OK to slaughter cows/sheep but don't
mutilate them! So there is talk of banning the Mules Op.

So the donkey candidate for president selects a running mate whose
main claim to fame (apart from incredibly high heels and gallons of
mascara) is that she managed to shoot a moose and butcher it (and,
with the help of her family, presumably eat it).

But a lung shot!!!!! Yuk!!!!!

According to my (Yank) dictionary, the plural of "moose" is the same as
the singular. :-)

FWIW, we don't have moose where I live, but we do have a rather large
population of whitetail deer. And while I haven't hunted in quite a
number of years, I've long heard that a lung shot was supposed to be the
most effective at bringing one down quickly, as they're known to run
quite some distance if hit in the heart. I'm not a biologist or
wildlife expert, so I can't attest to this, but an uncle who used to be
one of the most accomplished hunters I know often related it to me.
They aren't as large as moose, but it seems logical that there would be
similarities in hunting them.

There have been 11 World Wars? :-) (Yanking your chain here as I
always use WWII).

But a little history correction is in order. Most armies of the day
added automatic weapons, so you can't say it was just Yanks. And let's
not forget that there were only a small number of BAR men (Browning
Automatic Rifle) in any Army unit, while the others carried their
carbines instead.

I'm not familiar with either the Mules Op or the frenzied Yanks to whom
you refer. By chance are they part of that PETA group? These are the
same people who, if they had their way, would deny us all meat because
there's probably not really any slaughter method they'd consider
"humane". I hope they don't have their way, since I like meat!

First, she's not with the "donkey candidate" at all. The donkey symbol
is used by the Democratic Party, while the Republican Party uses an
elephant. She's with the Republican Party.

Second, since I've always been taught that the best way to start an
argument in a group setting is to discuss religion or politics, I'll
refrain from addressing your characterization of her one way or another.
After all, I'm the one who gets to decide whether or not to vote for her.

OK - so I'm the donkey! If Sarah is around I hope she doesn't mistake
me for another animal! Lung shot!!! Talking about plurals, did is you
know the plural for Elvis is Elvii?

Your mistake is that you think us Yanks are all PETA fanatics. Our
mistake is that we think you guys are crock-hunting shrimp-barbequers.

My advice to you is that if you somehow ever find yourself with a moose
in your gunsights, you probably should listen to an experienced hunter
on how to proceed. I'd certainly follow your advice if I ever found
myself on the back of a crock with only a really big knife.

I'm surprised that folks down under have such different taste in women
that you don't find Sara to be a right handsome sheila. Frankly, I have
no choice but to vote for her - well, I would if I made all my decisions
with my donger. :-)

American marksmanship lives on - through the tommy gun and the lung
shot. I agree Sarah looks good - especially compared with Biden (but
even a moose would). I can't claim any croc kills but, now and then, I
wage war on foxes after they have killed our ducks or the neighbor's
peacocks (who spend most of their time here) - I knocked over three in
one night once. All shot between the eyes - that's my story anyway (I
have one of those red laser thingies strapped to the 22). But, I
confess, I get zero satisfaction from it and havn't done it for a
while - though, come to think of it, there have been no losses to
foxes for a long time - maybe they got the message.

Those laser sights are cool. I first saw those in "The Terminator." You
might be right that Yanks can't shoot straight but you probably
shouldn't let it be known that you use a laser sight either! Ain't that
cheating? :-)

'Dead-eye Dick' or Annie Oakley I'm not. Hence the laser. I just
looked up the Olympic shooting places - US 2, Oz 14. but China was no.
1.

Annie Oakley I know of, but I had to Google "Dead-Eye Dick." Seems to be
one of the lesser known Kurt Vonnegut books. However, I did read
"Breakfast of Champions" and "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater" some decades
back.

My guess is that China and the US were using Tommy Guns. :-)

I thought everyone over there knew who Dead Eye Dick was:

Ah you're talking about our VP. Congrats on that - I wouldn't be able to
tell you the VP of Oz with a laser sight held between my eyes. :-)
