I wear 2 BTE aids, and need new ones. I have always had problems with
molds, rarely have I had a set that I have been happy with. I would like
to be fitted with new new speaker-in-the- ear style if possible. I have a
significant loss, here are the numbers:
Right Left
250 50 70
500 55 70
1000 80 70
1500 105 90
2000 120 110
I checked the websites for Siemen's and Phonak, and it looks to me that I
am in the fitting range for SIE's, I certainly hope so. I intend to see
an audiologist soon and get new aids. Do you think this would an
appropriate style for me?
Thank you for your advice
felwyn
I tried Starkey aids, and presently are trying Phonak aids. The first
set of Phonak's were the mushroom shaped (not ear molds) but were
similar so I guess you could say open-ear (but not really). I could not
understand speech with those and now am using the speaker-in-the-ear
with ear molds that have an air vent. Can't understand speech with
those either. I also have a condition call "recruitment" and so the
volume of the aids has to be turned way down so sound does not to hurt
my ears. So there's not much volume and I am returning these aids next
Tuesday.
I am going to Beltone next to see what they have to offer since I just
received an invitation in the mail.
I have been told that there is NO hearing aid that is going to make me
hear and that I might pursue a cochlear implant which is beyond my means.

One qustion, though... How long have you actually been wearing hearing
aids? If not long enough, it may be an issue of retraining your hearing
for better comprehension.

What really irks me is several friends who have good hearing think that
I should be able to hear since "so and so" friend of theirs has a
hearing aid and they hear just fine. You should get a hearing aid like
"so and so" because they hear just fine with theirs. When I ask them
what brand hearing aid they have, they don't know.
Hearing people think that a hearing aid will make you hear, if you just
turn up the volume. "Why don't you get a hearing aid like Mary's got",
they say.
I stay away from lectures in lecture halls because it's a waste of time.
I can't understand what they are saying. So called friends of mine
think I am using hearing as an excuse not to go. I've had people to
tell me that I've got to overcome my handicap.

That would irk me, too.

They have no conception of hearing impairment. I think they equate to
getting a pair of eyeglasses. You're fitted and have 20/20 vision.

Yeah, right. They will never understand.
I am fortunate that, while I have a very severe hearing loss, I to not have
recruitment or tinnitus, and I've been blessed with speech discrimination
in the 95% range or better, depending on the environment, yet I wear very
powerful aids.
I understand your plight. I just wish there were better technological
solutions.

You know, you have to be careful not
to get yourself locked into this open

My guess is that the process of determining your eligibility for CI goes
from the general to the specific i.e., first they have to find out if
you can even be helped by the surgery before doing all the other checks.
This seems to be the prudent way to proceed. It a surgeon told me that a
surgery could kill me, I'd be glad that heads up.
