I've been reading a lot about Oticon's new Syncro with "artificial
intelligence." It was mentioned in Popular Science magazine and their website
is pretty slick. I tried one today but couldn't tell if it was really that
good. They offered to let me try it out for a day next week. I was quoted a
cost of $6500 for two BTE which includes a $1000.00 rebate if I turn in my old
hearing aids.(Yikes! That means 7500 without the trade-in). Has anyone out
there tried this baby? I have a severe to mild reverse slope hearing loss
(severe in the low frequencies). I can not understand speech with any
background noise at all and I've been searching for at least 10 years for
something. Thanks in advance for your responses.

That sounds about $2500 on the high side!

I have a pair of Siemens 3P Trianos, that can do everything that you
need. Most people would probably consider the 5K price I paid too
high, but I also got unlimited visits to a Very qualified
audiologists, and total replacement if I even lose them!

Good Luck to you!

Best Regards,
Serpent

I bought the Oticon Syncro BTE for $5K. These are my first hearing aids,
and I have worn them for about 6 weeks.

While I see improvement in overall sound level and can hear better in
general conversation and small conferences at work, I have yet to experience
any breathtaking "artificial intelligence" where the aids use directional
hearing to subdue background noises, like voices behind me in a moderately
crowded restaurant.

I wonder if I am just expecting too much. I don't have the experience with
hearing aids in order to make a comparison.

If it is of any help, here are my audiometric readings. I lost my hearing
suddenly from either a virus or an auto immune illness.

The Syncro should be a super hearing aid for that price and I 'm sure
it is one of the better aids. Suggest you try the new Bernafon 115DM.
They operate on an entirely different principle than any other aid on
the market. I found them to be by far superior to all the others
including the Adapto....but I did not try the Syncro. I would take
the so-called artificial intelligence with a large grain of salt. Ed

He is 94 so I do not get much good info ,except they do not have any
feedback problems even if he don't get the ear mold in correctly.

I just got 2 Oticon Syncro CIC on Friday. These are my first hearing
aids, ever. My cost through Ahearingaid.com was just under $5000
including my audiologist, for two. Don't know about their network
audiologists in other areas, but in the Denver are, they have been
great so far.

One of the benefits of tha aid is its transparancy... don't expect to "hear"
it working, the enginmeers went to great strides to make it transparent.
Since you have no experience with hearing instruments, it means you have no
"yardstick" by which to compare.
However, no instrument can replace nerves that are dead, malfunctioning
etc., it may be that your residual hearing won't allow "perfect" speech
discrimination.

Please keep us posted on how you make out with these new aids.
Are they comfortable?
Are they visible in your ears from the side?
Since these are your first aids, it will take some time to get used to
the sound.

Victoria,

> Please keep us posted on how you make out with these new aids.

Last Wednesday was my first adjustment appointment. One of the
programs (Currently, I'm only using 2 of the 4) seems to be close to
being dead on. The other seems way too loud. I am getting a lot of
whistling in the left ear. I go back this Wednesday.

> Are they comfortable?

Actually, they are not unconfortable at all. I'm beginning to get used
to them. I try to wear them 14-15 hours per day.

> Are they visible in your ears from the side?

Yes, they are visible from the side. In a mirror, you can see the
little nylon pull string.

Right now, everything sounds like the treble is turned way up and a
little muted. I don't know if this can be adjusted or not. I sound
like I'm in a barrel when I talk.

Hi Jerry,

Offcourse the sound can be adjusted. And also the complain about the sound
like talking in a barrel, but this can be better solved by increasing the
air-canal in the earmolt. Ask your hearing-specialist!

Greetings from holland (The Hague),

Ab

Thanks for the information. I just had the left one refitted. It is
much larger, but does not whistle anymore. Unfortunately, it seems I
have to start over on the programming.
Can the audi change the size of the air-canel in the earmold or does
it have to be sent back to Oticon?
Thanks,
Jerry

It depends on the earmold and the audiologist, but it can be done.
