I haven't been here in a while, and have realized why. I hate seeing
all the SPAM and hateful posts from the trolls. Some place in there
the real, hurting people are being overshadowed.j

Is there anything we as individuals/ group can do to block this? I've
tried reporting the posts/ authors, but they're like roaches coming
out of the woodwork.

I guess one of the solutions would be to make this a semi-moderated
group, but that would force some people to become moderators & deal
with all this. I know enough to "not feed the trolls", but it's
discouraging when the posts from the trolls outnumber those who need
help.

dear mary,

i'm with you.

there was a time, right after my daughter died, when i would have
wished these trolls would also have a child die in their arms. now i
understand that our group has somehow made it onto a mass-posting and
these people who are lacking in basic, common humanity don't even know
or care how much they affect us. i think many, many newly bereft
never post here because of the trolls.

i have been guilty of not visiting often because of the trolls but i'm
going to change that. i needed help so badly when savannah died and
the least i can do is try to pass it along ...

best to you,

donna

I see from the header to your message that you are reading via google groups.
Every time I look at usenet via what <sigh> used to be deja news <sigh again> I
see why usenet seems to be dying.

As for myself, I access newsgroups using Fort Agent:
http://www.forteinc.com/agent/index.php
(I'm still using version 4.n actually, but ver. 5.nn is out.)
It costs $30 but has advantages over google groups. It allows you to read the
posts as "threads"; plus once you delete something, it stays gone (whereas,
every time you re-open groups.google.com, the same collection of tripe is
staring at you every time); plus, you can block / filter senders... etc. The
down side of course is yet a-NOTH-er user interface thing to learn. Other down
side is access to the groups -- you need a newsgroup feed provider. There are
free ones, but I use Agent Premium News (APN), the basic one at the base rate of
$2.95 per month billed to a credit card automatically:
http://www.forteinc.com/apn/index.php
Again, there are probably no-cost solutions, but I'm just saying what has worked
for me.

I've tried going to groups.google.com and submitting spam / troll reports for
some of the most attrocious stuff, but I can never tell if it has any effect.

I am sending you comforting thoughts from where I am, dear MaryD, you have been
a good friend for such a long time. I wish I could clean it all up.

I do not have the time or resources to create/moderate a moderated newsgroup.
And I have an aversion to the web-based chat-forum-thingies (most of which have
their own version of denizens, dangers, and cyclopes).

Wishing you all good things always, and peace and happy dreams,
