Does anyone here have information on or suffer from fruit allergies?

I have noticed that often when I eat apples, peaches, pears, plums or
nectarines I find my gums, tongue and throat all itchy, my sinuses get
swelled and often I start exhibiting signs of hay fever.

Is this likely an allergy to the fruit or to maybe a pesticide thats
on the fruit?

I notice that I dont get this reaction if I eat canned, previously
frozen or cooked fruit. Also I dont get a reaction from other fruits
(citrus, berries).

Thanks for any info.

Most likely the fruit. Look at the plant relationships file on my website;
those fruits are all related (in the rose family). One possibility is
sensitivity to salicylate; in which case you would expect to react also to
tartrazine (the food colouring E102 or FD&C Yellow 5) and aspirin, which
are chemically related. You can check food salicylate levels in the phyto-
chemical databases I have links to from my site.

Desensitization by cooking makes salicylate a less likely culprit. Citrus
is not in the rose family; berries are, but may be a rather remote subgroup
from the others on your list.

I was just reading about this very thing in "The Complete Allergy Book" by
Dr. June Engel. It is called Oral Allergy Syndrome. You are probably
allergic to beech tree pollen and you cross react to "fruit containing
similar molecules". You only react to fresh fruit because when it is
cooked or processed, it is rendered much less allergenic. Although this
condition rarely results in anaphylactic shock, you SHOULD SEE AN
ALLERGIST. My sister-in-law suffers from the same condition, and must
carry an Epipen just in case, as well as wear a medic-alert bracelet.
Fresh fruits to avoid are:
apples, cherries, peaches, plums, and pears. Hope this helps.

I no longer have this problem, but for many years I got an itchy swollen
mouth, throat, lips and ears after eating many of the foods on your
list. I was only affected by raw foods, never by cooked foods. My list
included:
apples, peaches, pears, peanuts, cashews, hazelnuts, sesame seeds, whole
wheat flour (but not white flour!),celery, potatos, carrots, cherries,
alfalfa sprouts, mung bean sprouts, and others I no longer remember.

Oddly enough, when I underwent a series of desensitization injections
for my airborn allergies (dust, grass, trees, ragweed), my food
allergies diminished almost entirely, although I was not getting treated
for them specifically. My allergist hypothesized that as my body got a
rest from it's perpetually allergic condition it lowered my general
sensitivity level.

Unfortunately, after a two year grace period, I came down with a case of
hives, which has lasted 7 weeks so far. So far I have no idea what the
cause is...

These fruits are from different families than citrus or berries. Often
the reaction is to proteins which are denatured (inactivated) by heat (eg.
cooking or canning). If you want to rule out pesticides I would suggested
a limited experiment with eating fruits with the skin removed. If no
reaction occurs then the offending substance is either in or on the skin
(which is usually removed for canning, cooking, etc.).

Good luck.

Hey! just want to let you know you are not alone. i too have the same
exact allergic reaction to most raw fruits and veggies and even nuts. i
tried eating organic fruit but it didnt help and either did taking off
the skin. I did find this out from a sample Food Allergy Network
newsletter:

Those who develop hay fever symmptoms after eating certain raw veggies,
nuts, seeds, or fresh fruits have Oral Allergy Syndrome.
It is caused by cross-reacting identical allergens that are present in
both the pollen and fresh food.
Because the allergens responsible for these reactions are usually
destroyed by heating or digestion, affected individuals can usually eat
fruits and veggies that have been cooked, bajed or canned. Symptoms
include itching or swelling of the lips tongue throat or roof of mouth.

i have the whole article if you want me to send it to you..

Re Food sensitivities/delayed food reactions.

Many people experience problems with food intolerances and exclusion diets
are usually recommended to deal with them and identify problems.

We are offering a service to individuals through a new company called
Immunology@Home. We supply a kit which allows the user to take a minute
sample of blood which is sent to our laboratory for analysis of food
specific antibodies.
