Hi,

I have an odd reaction to chocolate. Within minutes (sometimes seconds)
of eating it, I get a strange feeling in my skin, mainly on my face and
scalp. It's a sort of spreading chill or mild tingling like goose-bumps.
I also start to feel nauseous and shaky.

I've had this reaction as long as I can remember and thought it was
normal. But when I asked a friend if chocolate had the same effect on
her, she said it didn't.

I don't have any unusual reactions to milk or nuts and I can eat other
sweet / sugary foods without any problems.

I thought it might be something to do with caffeine but I'm not sure.

Anyone have any idea what it could be?

Thanks,

Joe.

I have a friend who goes into anaphylactic shock after ingesting a
chocolate sprinkle. You are lucky your allergery is milder.

You can be allergic to just chocolate. Avoid it.

The reaction is mild but I think I will avoid chocolate from now on.
Better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks,

Joe.

I would suggest this is likly a mild histamine release due to a co-product
in the chocolate you are eating. As a whole it would take approx 20 lbs of
chocolate for it to be toxic for a human -- in fact, dark chocolate (not
milk) has more anit-oxidants than blue berries - the most anit-oxidant rich
fruit / veggie. It is a healthy choice for a good diet. Speak to a
registered dietitian who is familar with these facts.

You might want to try basic ingredients like making hot chocolate or a
chocolate sauce and see if it gives you the same effect. Some people _are_
allergic to cocoa and if you know you don't react to any of the other
ingredients, you've got your answer.
