My earliest suspicions that $cientology was a cult arose when I took my
first course, the HAS course.
As a matter of routine, the entire staff and all the students would stop
work, gaze up to a gold-framed picture of their Fuerher Elron Flubbard, and
applaud as if Elvis had materialized onstage at a rock concert.
At that time I was impressed with Dianetics and disillusioned with "other
practices", so I went along with it. As has been said regarding such scams,
"You can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all
of the time - - "
To me "OT" does not mean "operating thetan", but Observing Truth. There was
something in $cientology's HQS course about "obnosis", defined as observing
the obvious. One is supposed to learn to see through deceptions and never
make false assumptions. If it really worked, all the students, upon reading
it, would simply say AH-HA! and walk out of the "church" never to return
again!
