I am in the process of interviewing with MSNBC and a local TV Station
regarding Endometriosis / Dioxin in Tampons. Inevitably, anytime I speak
to someone regarding these issues, one question always asked is "what does
the pain from endo feel like?"
Now, I know very well how to describe the feelings that I get. However, I
know we all have different as well as some of the same pains, reactions,
etc. So what I am asking for are 'catch phrases' for how you feel your
pain.
My Examples:
Sharp stabbing pain - like someone sticking a knife in your gut!
Dull ache all the time
Etc.......
So What Is It Ladies?
As always, your input is greatly appreciated.

Ok here goes.....My endo pain.......The pain I have with ovulation feels like I
am try to pass a small porcipine instead of a microscopic egg. Th pain I feel
while menstuating makes my toes curl. I would rather be passing the porcipine.
The pain that makes me double over,because it hurts so bad, causes my
ligaments tighten up so when I try to stand or straighten it feels like someone
is trying to cut my insides out. The pain I have when I try to makelove with
my husband just makes me cry. The pain I have during a Papsmear makes me want
to kick the doctor in the face, over and over. The way I descibe Endo to
people that don't know what it is...Lets just say God decided to play a dirty
trick on you and superglue all you organs together...Now try to go to the
bathroom.

As for the pain, well here are a few of the ways I describe some of the pains I
get. Please keep in mind that they are kind of graphic.
Rectal pain, which I get quite frequently, for me feels like somebody driving a
double edged knife into my bottom.
My crotch constantly hurts - feels like I got kicked really hard and is
constantly aching. The only pain I've had before that is similar was when I
was close to delivering my son and the bones were shifting for childbirth -
that achy hurting feeling.
I have a constant dull ache in the right lower side of my abdomen that
occasionally becomes very sharp and leaves me breathless, again like a knife is
being plunged in.
That's just a few. Hope it helps.

First let me say congratulations for getting an interview with MSNBC and your
local station. I hope you'll keep us posted if this develops into a story that
will air nationally.
So....you want to know about the pain? Fortunately I haven't had bad endo pain
since last June, but I had it long enough to remember it well.
It would start out as just a feeling of pressure, a general all-over the
abdomen feeling. Then it felt like my uterus was stuck in a vise, along
running down my legs, and into my back, sometimes making it difficult to walk.
Then I'd get hot, sweaty, then cold. (Lupron hot flashes were nothing compared
to that).
With that, I can only use an expression my father used when his hiatus hernia
would act up - I felt "sick all over." It's not like when you bang your knee
or pull a muscle and the pain is in one spot and you can isolate it and even
ignore it. I would just feel like I was going to die, and believed I would die
from the pain.
Off-camera, if you have a male interviewer, I suppose you could suggest he
imagine someone gripping his testicles, hard, for a few days. And having
someone tell him this is "normal." That has worked for me when male friends
asked.

Ruth, I have adenomyosis, not endo, but the pain with menstration was always
excrutiating. One way I describe it was that a vulture had ripped open my
abdomen (not a nice clean surgical cut mind you, but ripped open). Then the
vulture would tear into my uterus, ripping out chunks, one by one, slowly
over two days. My mother, with similar symptoms, used to say that on a scale
of 1 to 10, with her cramps being a ten, labor pain was only a 4. So
basically, this is like going through labor every month, except there's no
break between contractions, there's no baby at the end (no purpose for the
pain), and you have doctors refusing to give you pain medication. Many women
are screaming with pain during labor, yet our pain is worse. And what doctor
would deny a woman in labor pain meds? Not having been through labor, I can't
verify this, but I'm sure some of you can. Hope these help, Julie

13. You name it, I had it: heavy flows, erratic number days between and
during, intensely painful cramps that would not respond to any over the
counter pain killer until Ibuprofen came along and that only provided partial
relief as well as fevers, usually around 101 degrees. My mom sent me to
doctors, all which said although intense, lots of girls have periods like this
and it was "normal". I always went home sick from school during periods as I
usually could not stand up.
The pain literally felt like some one was twisting my insides and something
was alive in me that was trying to expand its way out. I was constantly
bloated and developed IBS. again, all "normal" according to doctors. by age
18, periods stabilized to normal 28,5 schedule but remained intense and heavy.
As I reached my twenties, lower back pain increased and concentrated near
ovaries. pain ws so acute I literally could not stand up straight and these
pains in 1996 finally started between periods to be very intense and
constant. It was like a knife was stuck in my lower back on each side,
pinning me at ovaries and being twisted. I now had bleeding between periods
and was completely debilitated. I had seen a GYN at once a year up to that
point.
It wasn't until December 1996 when I went to yet another GYN that I was
diagnosed with ENDOMETRIOSIS, specifically, ENDOMETRIOSIS in both ovaries as
well as adhesions on GI tract and bladder. Also, all reproductive and GI
organs were now stuck together by adhesions. This new GYN remarked that my
high tolerance to pain had prevented proper diagnosis by previous doctors,
meaning I did cry or scream enough for them. Calmly stating that your are in
excruciating pain was not I good idea, I guess. Live and Learn.
I guess periods weren't so normal after all.

way. That is what I used to have to do with Web-TV posts. Now... my +ACI-catch
phrases+ACI- for endo pain....
pulling, twisting, 'stitch in my side', constant nagging type of pain,
burning deep inside, rectal pain is deep throbbing pain, vise grip on my
side (left side is constant with me).

You know the cramps that normal people take tylonol for x's them by about 100
and that might be the start of our pain.
It starts on the left side a few days before the period just light cramps
kinda like what I assume normal people have. It gets worse each day. Untill
the bleeding starts then it is just mass torchure. Bent in half for a week at
a time then the migraines and the horible pain. Plus trying to carry on a
"normal" life. What is that any ways?

I'm fortunate not to experience the pain every month. I get my attacks
about every 3-6 months. I always know when an attack is about to come on
because my stomach gets upset...I initially suspect food poisoning. Then
after I realize I haven't eaten anything to have caused the suspicion I
cringe because I know it's going to be a rough next 7 - 10 days.
I classify my pain as "a sharp knife to the gut that remains embedded with
someone grabbing it and moving it around every 15-30 seconds."

my ob/gyn told my husband to imagine that his testicle was super glued to
his penis and then all of that was super glued to his leg then told him to
imagine walking around like that most of the time. It was a bit graphic I
will admit but my husband got the point

Another description I think of is being kicked in the stomach over and over
again. It's hard to describe to someone who doesn't have endo isn't it?
It feels like someone poured acid into my
abdomen (for that wonderful burning feeling) and for the rectal pain I get,
"It feels like I've been stabbed with a hot poker.
I also use the "double me over" scale. The worst pain I've had doubled me
over, made me yell and thrash.
A new one, just today ... when I urinated, it felt like all of my insides
were
caving in and trying to come out with the fluid. It also felt like some
little
creature was standing on my pubic bone with an ovary in each hand (even
though
I only have one) and pulling with all his strength and weight.
I can also describe the pain as if it feels
like your ovaries are being pinched. Also, I feel a lot of burning.
Sometimes it feels as if something is inside of me and trying to rip it's
way
out! I get sharp, pinching, stinging pains. Sudden sharp, knife-like pains
that drop me to my knees. Cramps that feel just like contractions. At times
it feels like I pulled a muscle in my stomach. When I stretch it feels like
something is being ripped apart.
This one is weird...sometimes I feel like I have a horrible sunburn.

It feels like a rat is in my stomach and is trying to eat its way out.
Burning from within. Like having boiling water inserted into uterus.
During ovulation: Hot lava pouring from my ovaries, pain with bowel
movements, intercourse, and urination. During menstruation: Massive back
pressure, bloated belly, feels like someone is putting out matches
throughout internal organs. Pain with bowel
movements, urination. Various times throughout the month: Various stabbing,
burning, and pain with bowel movements, and morning urination.
The pain itself is like being stabbed right above the hip on the
right side, and as I get closer to my period, it feels like it
increases and and eventually feels like some huge throbbing being
trying to escape. (Sounds like a horror flick)
I've had Endo for 8 years. I'm 22 years old.
Endo pain is like some one has hooks attached to your insides and is slowly
pulling the hooks out. It's always there. Sometimes it feels like you have
pain wrapping around your whole waist in a tidal wave. The pain will go
from
your abdominal area to your back then wraps around again. The worst pain I
experience is the constant sharp pain that feels like Freddie Krueger is
inside
of my abdomen and running his knives through my guts, into my spine and
down
my legs. I hope this helps to inform people how much Endo hurts.
I feel with my period I might as well be in labor. The dull ache is
afterward as if I'd been in a fight and gut punched several times and just

Sharp, stabbing/severe pinching pain on the nerve endings in and/or
near the reproductive tract - these kinds of pains are debilitating. If
driving, I must pull over
as they completely break my attention. If walking, I must stand or sit. If
asleep, I wake up and curl into fetal position. Fortunately, these kinds of
pains tend to last for no more than 5 minutes and subside into a more dull,
aching pain, which can last for days/months.
Pressure/cramping pain on one or both sides around the ovaries/tubes.
This one can be a constant that stays with you for months and can best be
associated with constant, chronic back pain.
I have several types of pain from endo... some of the descriptions I would
use are below: A pinching pain -- as though your skin & deeper are pinched
in a zipper! Chronic aching pain -- much like menstrual cramps except EVERY
SINGLE DAY of the month. Everyone has experienced the horrible cramping
pain that you get with diarrhea -- yep just like that but without the
relief you get when you actually go! An aching pain that feels like I've
fallen onto the support bar of a bicycle and horribly bruised myself.

As of the past few months- severe cramping, sharp AND dull during ovulation
days. BLOATING beyond belief a week before and DURING my period.
1st two days of period sharp, stabbing, pulsating cramps.
last two days...dull cramps. I also have the wonderful bowel problems to go
along with the pain in my abdomen.
I usually say A knife is stabbed into the right side of my abdomen and
brought across, low abdomen, all the way to the left. The low dull ache all
the time is a pain that nothing can reach, no heating pad, massage and
sometimes not even painkillers. That goes for the stabbing pain as well.
like being in labor. It would usually last about 12-14
hours, during which time I could not sleep, sit or do anything. When it
would finally pass, my stomach would actually be tender to the touch. I
could wear only very loose-fitting clothes over it and it would take until
my period was over for it to get better.
My severe pain has always been a very sharp and very hot burning sensation
that begins in a very small area (usually very lowest center of pelvis) and
grows in both area and intensity until it is all over my abdomen, around my
back and up through my ribs!!! The muscles in all these areas get so
cramped that I literally can't move or breath. It is truly agony when it's
at its worst. All I can do is take the pain pills then lay down and cry
until they kick in. I would describe the bad pain as like being on fire
inside and the normal everyday pain as a constant dull ache.
of course there is the norm...stabbing,
feeling like your insides are being pulled out through your vagina...like
someone is opening you up and yanking on them...some times it comes in
waves...like you can be walking around and the very next second you are on
the
floor doubled over and can't move at all...like total paralysis...but the
pain
doesn't only affect your body it also effects your mind...
physical: someone standing on your back....or punching it...your
insides are bruised..it feels like that the day after...like there is acid
in
your stomach eating up everything...burning...
Mental: total fear..think you are going to die...wanting to sometimes
just so the pain will stop...feeling like you cant control
anything...frustration...punishment for something.
Most often, the pain feels like someone is grabbing and pinching and
twisting very hard, the very tender skin of the inside of my forearm -
only,
at various locations inside my abdomen.

How about trying a tugging, burning pain that makes you feel like you are
I would describe my pain most days as a dull ache. Like a bad tooth ache.
On days it's really bad it's like someone suddenly reached through me and
grabbed an ovary and squeezed.

My description of the pain is as follows
There is pain with sex. Ever had a canker sore in your mouth and had
someone touch your mouth? Same basic feeling. Every time he gets deep, with
every pounding, it feels like someone touching a "canker" sore in me.
There is back pain. This feels like there is a bone virus. It aches; feels
like its been bent in the wrong direction.
Basic endo pain is the hardest to decribe. Almost as if there is a red hot
hand inside my intestinal tract and it's turning my intestines inside out.

intensify. I look 4..no 5 months pregnant. on the lower right side I am
having knife stabbing pains that hit at 2 minute intervals. The center
of my pelvic feels like its being twisted. its like labor pains. My
vagina is sore and feels like my insides are going to fall out. It hurts
to pee.I have rectal pain and bleeding cause it hurts to go. My insides
feel like they are on fire. My lower back is throbbing. I have stage 4
endo..and 14 fibroids. My GYN says I need a hysterectomy. I took a
vicodin an hour ago and I still am doubled over in pain. This all will
build up ang get worse until my period. Then I won't be able to get out
of bed for 2 days. I have to wear overnight pads in the day and even
those fill up in an hour. Should I have a hysterectomy? I still am
undecided. I am 44

With all the pain you have and your fibroids, I think in your shoes I would
definately have a hyst. Keep in mind that a hyst is not a guaranteed cure for
endo. Some people keep having symptoms. I am 29 and considering the same
thing. I feel like it would help some if not totally improve your life.

if someone is trying to rip out my left ovary once again. Fun huh? I am just so
glad that we all have this place filled with such loveing endo sisters that
understand us when we need them.

of having a hot poker jabbed around the left side. I too look 5 months
pregnant. I'm allergic to most pain meds so I don't get anything.
Motrin as you all know doesn't touch the pain for me. I'm lucky to
have a husband who doesn't demand sex (intercourse), but we do other
things, but no orgasm for me because that hurts too. I have an
entrapped nerve from previous scar tissue and my surgery is Feb 17.

at night by the pain!!! I often do the same nightmare because of it. It's
sound funny at first but it's very panicking for me...In my nightmare...I'm
sitting right beside a very very very big woman in a theater or something
like that, The big woman faint...I don't know why she does...all I know is
that she fall on top of me...And I can't move. Her elbow is right on my
stomach and start penetrating in my left side, right on my ovary. There's
blood everywhere and my organs are spilled all over the place. There's people
around us, but they don't see us. There's people I know, but nobody see
me...I cry for help and no response. There's people I love and they can't do
anything for me...I'm terrified, I scream, I cry...The pain is so
intense...It's hard to describe...I feel everything in me tarring apart. I
try to get her off me, but I can't. Nobody help...I think I'm dying. It's
panicking, It's hurting like hell, It's a stabbing and constant pain for my
body and also for my mind. In this nightmare...The pain is so extreme...I
which to passe out myself...I can't stand the pain. I usually wake-up
screaming. I realize I'm in pain for real!!! The pain is as bad as in my
nightmare!!! No need to by a psychiatrist to see that...this nightmare is the
reflection of my pain and the felling that goes with it...It's very
painful...you can't run from it...nobody can help, not even myself!!!
