Also, does anyone take anything for constipation regularly that works
but isn't habit forming (other than psyllium/metamucil)?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'll be very grateful for any answers.
Thanks in advance.

I haven't tried calcium citrate. However, I do take Tums (regular strength)
twice a day to help with my calcium intake since I have osteoporosis. They
don't cause constipation (for me at least). But although I take the
supplements, it's probably not too much help since I still don't get my period
(even though I am at a healthier weight and eat good). Anyway, my point is...
I haven't experienced any problems with constipation when taking the tums.
Hugs,
Nicole:)
I take calcium citrate (Citracal +D). No problems here. I understand your
discomfort with contsipation. Nothing is worse than feeling plugged up and
then the gas problems can really be a downer.
Whole grains and raw fruits and vegetables and drinking lots of water are
the cure. These things are not fattening either.
I like to take a zip lock bag and fill it with spoon sized shredded wheat
and bran squares, throw in some peanuts, raisins, dates or almonds. These
plus a large bottle of water are my rations going to work. I sometimes have
oatmeal for breakfast and in the fall I always have citrus for breakfast.
Not juice, but the fruit shipped up fresh from Florida.
I don't know, but this way of eating can be habit forming ;-) You get used
to being regular and don't want to go back to being the other way. I often
have 3 movements a day.
Sorry that you have osteoporosis now. Wow! How did you survive with 14
years of bulimia? If you conquered that, you can certainly get past those
calcium pills. (they are kind of big though and I don't like swallowing
them either.) I think that the price you could pay for not taking the
calcium could be much worse than constipation. You do want to take good
care of yourself, don't you? Please try the pills and try changing your
diet a little to include some bran and fresh vegees. If the pills make you
constipated you can stop taking them, but you won't know until you try them.
If 4 a day are too binding, you can cut back to 2 per day. At least you
will be doing something to help your condition. Have you found a list of
calcium rich foods? You could make a point of adding these to your diet
too. Give yourself the best, you deserve it.
Kalli (email me if you want a list of calcium rich foods. I'll reply you
one)

i get my calcium from tums! the berry flavors are the best. they are like
candy i love 'em.
i also just switched from nonfat soy milk to skim milk....and i try to eat
yogurt.
also- leafy greens and broccoli have calcium.
you probably know this, but Magnesium and Zinc are also really important for
people with eds. i think it's magnesium that helps bones absorp calcium.

Also, Vitamin C is essential to help absorb calcium AND iron.

> wow. that's new use for lactulose. doesn't the sweet taste make you sick??
what exactly IS lactoluse? is it a pill or liquid or what? i ask because
i am a tums popper too. but i take the max, about six to ten a day. i
have bad bloating, gas, and constipation. about once every ten to twelve
days i take a stool softener in order to "go". and i have never in my
life abused laxatives, which is really annoying. just now that i am
eating, i get plugged up. i dont think it is the tums though causing the
problem. drinking some caffeinated coffee helps me some. and eating lots
of fuits and veggies (but this too causes me bad bloating and gas). any
suggestions?
