I've suffered with Focal Segmental Dystonia for 16yrs, and been on
prescribed medication of Artane, Clonazapam & Sodium Valproate (Epilepsy).
I seen my consultant last week, and he suggested that I should opt for Botox
injections, 3 every two months. One in the front of my neck, and two in the
back of head. But, he told me there can be side-effects if the injection in
the front neck muscle, drains down towards the bottom of this muscle - which
would cause problems with swallowing.
So, I've got to either have the Botox injections or put up with the extreme
pain in my neck and shoulder....... I've read on here that Botox can take
2-3 weeks before any effect is noticeable - Is there any other medication
that can ease the pain? I don't like the sound of Botox injections for the
rest of my life..
TIA...
Les..
Ive been on Botox for 5 yrs. Very effective at first. Not too great now. I
refuse to increase the dose which is 200cc right now. 3 times per year.
Ask your Dr where he came up with that protocol. 3 every 2 months??? I hate
drugs and injections but it should help you. Find out how often your Doc
does botox. i have some minimal problems swallowing.

I will contact my doctor regarding Botox. He did tell me that the
injections do wear off, after a certain period - which he told me was
2mths!!! He has now referred me to see a specialist in Botox adminstration.
I am supposed to be seen by the specialist in January or February, I have to
wait until then to find out what exact dosage I will be on. I don't mind
needles, I've had so many when first diagnosed.
Thx.

Yes effect may be late

Doctors sometimes give benzodiazepines like rivotril but be careful
not to get addicted with this

When the ST evolves favourably you can consider getting less injections
and perhaps even stop them : I was on 4 doses a year but for 5 years but
after the last injection something has changed, I am now far better and
didn't have injection for 10 months. Keep hope : the onset of the ST
seems to be always the most difficult time but things _can_ better.
Also, her injections go directly into the vocal cords. She has a higher dosage
than normal. It's a big decision whether to go for botox. Its the future I
worry about.
