A former owner and instructor of an elite and popular Mississauga
swimming school for youngsters, was sentenced to six years in jail
yesterday for sexually assaulting children and recording the crime on
videotape.
John Michael Rolph, 41, owner of Buckler Aquatics on Dixie Rd., pleaded
guilty last fall to sexually assaulting a teen, the sexual interference
of a 13-month-old baby, and making and distributing child pornography.
Superior Court Justice J.J. Keaney heard yesterday the married father
of four assaulted the teen during a period between June 1998 and March
2003.
Rolph also took sexual pictures of himself with the 1-year-old he was
babysitting while she slept.
"Vulnerable children and the public have to be protected from those who
prey on innocent children," Keaney said in his ruling yesterday.
"The damage to the victims and their families in this case is
significant. They have suffered from a loss of self-esteem, pain,
anguish and grief."
None of the charges involve students or customers of his family's chain
of swimming facilities in Mississauga, North York, or Scarborough,
court heard.
In passing sentence, Keaney also ordered the Oshawa resident to provide
a sample of his DNA to the courts and that his name be added to the
national sex offender registry for life.
Rolph also is prohibited from having any dealings with children 14
years and under, except under supervision of an adult.
During the investigation, investigators found computer discs and
videotapes containing "thousands" of pornographic images and videos of
children in sexual situations, Durham Police said.
Kelly Thurgood, whose daughter was taught by Rolph at the Dixie Rd.
school before he was charged in April of 2003, remains disgusted and
betrayed with the crimes.
"He should not be allowed to have anything to do with the teaching of
children ever again," she said. "My daughter was enrolled for two
years, but I pulled her out right after he was charged. I'm so
appalled. He was such a good instructor, very personable and definitely
displayed a firm gentleness with children. Parents would try to switch
their instructors to get this guy."
Founded by swimming instructor Jack Buckler in 1968, Buckler Aquatics
has specialized in Red Cross swimming and water safety programs for
both children and adults. In addition, the private aquatic organization
also offers programs in synchronized swimming, as well as a
special-needs program for the physically and mentally challenged.
Teaching around 3,000 students each week, Buckler Aquatics is one of
the largest private aquatic companies in North America.
