I have two step sons from my wife's previous marriage. Several years
ago they were in a car accident when they were 2 and 5. Both boys
received insurance cheques for injuries/trauma. The cheque was given
to their father who was to save the money for the boys in trust.

Their father cannot manage is money and lives hand to mouth. He spends
every penny he earns and is always far in debt. As well he showed up
at our bank some time ago and tried to withdraw money from the trust
account we have for the boys. He couldn't get this money because the
trustee is my wife.

My question is if there is a way to find out what happened to the
boys' money from the car accident? Are trust accounts public record? I
doubt the money stayed in trust for the boys for very long, he
undoubtedly spent it. I do have a good lawyer but am curious what kind
of suggestions/comments I may get here before I talk to her for
$250/hr.

I live in Alberta, Canada by the way.

He's in Canada. In the US, trust accounts are not public record.

I don't know about Canada.
