permanent damage - fact of life
too old to do much about it
some well intentioned person bought me a 2000 piece puzzle for
christmas
started it - don't think i can finish it - we need the dining room
table sooner or later
seems like a metaphor or something
...
It's all about quality of life in the present. Whatever is going to
allow you to live in a happy and functional way right now is a good
idea to pursue. If that means dealing with past stuff, fine. If
that means NOT dealing with past stuff, also fine.
And being functional and happy has nothing to do with 'damage'.

Or it is pointing out that there are always options available. One
that comes to mind is to buy tv trays to eat off of, or a fold up
table you can use for the puzzle, or use the floor or... :)

yeah you can put it on the floor. i only eat at the table when others
insist, if it's me alone i eat in my room. :P
They also sell cloth thingies that you can put a half-finished puzzle on
and then roll it up for storage to clear the table.
Oh yeah, forgot about that one. I used to have a flat heavy cardboard
thing that folded in half for smaller puzzles but the roll up one
works better for bigger ones.

sounds like depression
Or: cheat and consult the picture on the box occasionally. I'm usually
a purist and won't look at the picture while doing a puzzle but made
an exception for this due to time constraints (but still did over 95%
of the work with no consultation). I finished last night at 2 AM. By
the way, this is the puzzle:

....looking at the picture on the box is cheating? my foo always looks
at the box :P
It is strange how you internalize rules from growing up. I'm a decent
puzzle solver but my younger sister is a virtuoso who could do a 500
piece puzzlw by herself in 2 or 3 hours and once did such a puzzle
upside down just relying on the shapes of the pieces. She let it be
known in no uncertain terms that hard-core puzzle doers do *not*
consult the picture on the box. When I started to do this 2000 piece
puzzle (the largest I've ever done) I realized that I had to depart
from my sister's exacting standards.

hoq do you acquire them if you can't look at the picture? you buy a
puzzle without looking at the box?
That would be interesting - but the idea would be to look at the box
before doing the puzzle but not use the picture on the box as a tool
for locating where pieces go while doing the puzzle. There are actual
competitions in which players all do the same puzzle without even the
advantage of knowing what the picture on the puzzle is.
