I've been driving back and forth 2 hours each way checking up on
parents
since my mother had a nasty break in her leg near her hip. getting in-
home
services in place now that she is out of rehab place

juggling that with need to work part time and co-parent 28 year old
son who has Down
syndrome

missed a therapy appointment because I was too slow to get ready so I
called
and cancelled and went back to bed for some sleep therapy

I think I set some sort of record the other day :P I drove 30 miles
down to the flat parts to get my hair trimmed, drove 40 miles south
to kidlette's school to pick her up (sick), drove 25 miles back home
to drop her off, drove 25 miles back to school for her iep meeting,
drove 25 miles back home to pick up fritz, dropped him off at home
with kidlette (she is old enough to 'be in charge'!), drove 25 miles
back to school to have another meeting with her next year advisor,
drove 25 miles back home to make dinner. Fortunately, I didn't have
any clients that day... I never did get lunch that day :P~~~~

I like sleep t'py! :)

gee, I remember iep meetings, 21 years of them...hope kidlette's went
well

my son's needs are very extensive and I learned early on to make
everyone
feel like we were all working together (most of the time we were) but
sometimes his dad and
I had to really fight for services and school placements. After awhile
they basically said " Mrs.__ what do you want for son1?"
because they knew I would advocate for him and bring in other
professionals to make the case for our requests.

It helps I was a spec ed teacher in the district pre-kids :) It also
helps that kidlette has had some sort of miraculous 'cure' in the past
school year. We are trying to not be too confused, but she went from
seriously a handful to pretty normal in the span of a few weeks. I
think much of it was because people were giving her attention for her
concerns (finally! We had been telling them to do this since she was 7
and she finally got it when she was 11). In her case, her needs aren't
all that noticably big, but the lack of services was very clearly
disruptive to her.

And 4 from my son's... :P So, on a normal day the SO takes kidlette
to school and then goes to work. I take fritz to school and then
train my clients. On days when the SO can't do this, I take fritz to
school about 20 minutes too early and then kidlette gets to school
about 15 minutes late *shrug*

Being early to my son's school is actually more of a problem. He
goes to a very traditional school and they really frown on people
having a life outside of school. My daughter's school is much more
realistic and child centered, so if she is 15 minutes late it isn't
too bad (as long as it doesn't happen every day of course).

Oh great, you are so tired you don't even know if you are tired?
Yesterday I managed to totally space a meeting (not a client! phew)and
realized 1 minute before I needed to be 30 miles away :P

did reschedule (and made it that time).

Yep, it's like giving someone the right drugs when they are sick and
then they get better fast. If you hit upon the correct cure it can
often work very quickly and be amazing!

Now she is set to go into the next level of program at her school and
people are setting it up to be successful :)

the trick now will be having them sustain what they're doing. they'll
tend to forget she has needs if she's doing well. expect the: she's
doing so well, let's try stopping what we're doing. :P

That's not going to happen with me around, trust me!

My concern is that her new advisor isn't going to be quite the person
she needs. I dunno... I've known this woman since kidlette was 4. She
is a very narrow minded thinker. Her way is best and why would anyone
think other wise. Her daughter and kidlette have been friends since
they moved here. One day kidlette was at their house for a sleepover
and a racoon got in through the dog door and it scared kidlette and
she was crying and upset and wanted to call me. This made the woman
annoying and aggravated (because she had to deal with it and not stay
in her room reading and ignore the girls, she was also mad that
kidlette had to call me). So she and I agreed that
the girls wouldn't sleep at their house from now on but sleep here.
Fine with me *shrug* So then earlier this year the kids went on one of
their camping trips but it was to a winter lodge hotel place and the
daughter wanted all lights off and kidlette wanted one light left on
over night and the girl (who is a bit of a snot and spoiled) refused
and they argued and kidlette was crying because she was afraid of the
dark and the girl called her a baby. Then she went home and told her
mother about this.

Then a week ago I met with the woman professionally and the woman said
'I don't think kidlette should come on the first trip of the year if
she is just going to cry. It will be embarassing to the other girls
(?) and upset me and it will embarass kidlette as well' WTF!?!?!?

When I got home I talked to kidlette about this and she said it
wouldn't happen in a tent (and it never has) because she knows there
is no light in a tent, but in a hotel room she wants the bathroom
light on. So, I'm going to let her talk to her new advisor about this
and start the relationship. If at any point in the future this becomes
an issue I will definitely get involved as the kids do go on trips
that involve staying in hotels (heck, if necessary I'll go with her
and she will sleep, in the room I pay for, with a few friends and then
the light WILL be left on).

Well, the school has a strong tradition of believing that the way the
cards are drawn is for the best (the names are drawn out of a hat so
the advisors and kids are randomly put together) and it is a seriously
uphill battle to get things changed. My plan is to confront the woman
face to face every single time she is a jerk and eventually she will
either stop or we will get the principal involved. And it is possible
that things really will work out most of the time. In general this
woman is a good teacher. I didn't expect kidlette's current advisor to
be a good fit and he has been amazing!

Of course. It was part of 'knowing what to do when I decided to have
kids' If I wasn't ready for this type of 'fight', I wasn't ready to be
a mom. :)

And of course the opposite it true as well, I expect my kids to fit
into social norms. It's not that I want everything done for
their convenience. I absolutely expect my kids to take risks and put
themselves out there. Tomorrow I will be taking a group of kids to the
zoo as part of a field trip. The way this field trip works is: the
parent and kid decides on a destination (anywhere within the city as
that is the point of this trip, to get to know the city better) and
the kid makes a sign up sheet and puts it on the table. Other kids
read the sheets and pick which trip they want to attend. So, of course
kidlette's best friend is going with us, and another close friend as
well. And then someone who kidlette says doesn't like her is going as
well. Now, did this kid sign up 'because there wasn't any other
choice' as she put it, or because she wants to get to know kidlette
better, or because they really don't have the problems kidlette thinks
they have, or because the kid wants to hang out with someone else who
is going, or... Doesn't matter. Kidlette was upset and I pointed out
that this is a fantastic opportunity to get to know this kid better
and see what is going on relationship wise. Of course kidlette isn't
thrilled, but *shrug* that is how life works and I will be there to
make sure it works out.

I just hope it doesn't rain. Then we have to the museum instead and I
want to see all the new babies at the zoo! :)

The weather was great, the kid kidlette was upset about didn't show up
and we went to the zoo. It was a lot of fun and we saw many many
babies :)
