the Arts honors high school seniors and artists age 17 and 18 in the
Arts Recognition and Talent Search. The foundation recognizes
outstanding efforts in visual arts, dance, theater, writing,
photography, and music composition and performance. Awards ranging
from $100 to $3,000 are given to 125 students selected to take a
one-week, expenses-paid trip to Miami for workshops and auditions.

interdisciplinary initiative inviting landscape designers and
architects, artists, horticulturists, architects, urban foresters,
sculptors, graphic designers, and community activists to address the
problems of city street trees and develop innovative design ideas for
increasing the survival of the urban forest. "The concentrated
attention of artists and designers to street trees is long overdue,"
they write. "Engaging the creativity of art and design professionals
in the effort to raise consciousness about urban forestry, the
National Art & Design Competition for Street Trees proposes to

provide the setting for a memorable moment in filmmaking history, when
the first annual Manhattan Short Film Festival (MSFF) awards a grand
prize of a $250,000 feature film package to the director of the
winning short film entry. On Sunday, September 27, 1998, the MSFF will
take over historic Mulberry Street with three full sized screens
showcasing 24 short films for an anticipated audience of 10,000 film
enthusiasts. "It's important that the festival is accessible to the
public, because ultimately it's the public that elevates the careers
of emerging filmmakers," said Nicholas Mason, festival director.
"We're soliciting entries internationally, and our goal is to discover
and promote fresh and new talent from selected countries, creating a
kind of filmic Olympiad," said Mason. "The success of this festival
