Had my second week WI today. Well, not as exciting as the first
week...not by far. Lost .2 lbs. At least in the right direction. :)

I did learn something from it. The first week where I lost more I ate
higher up in my points (I am 26-31 and I was eating on avg. about
28/day). This week, not only did I eat at my minimum (or under 2x)
most days, I also increased my activity from last week. So no wonder
my body didn't let go of much!!!

So this week I gave myself two behaviors to work on. One, being a
little less timid and eating higher in my points again. Two, trying
not to eat 2 1/2 hours before bedtime, which is hard for me since a
lot of the time I don't get home from work until 6:30pm-7:00PM and go
to bed between 10pm and 11pm. But I'll work on it.

Otherwise been great sticking to the plan. Hopefully next week I'll
have a more encouraging loss than .2. :)

Hi Melissa,
Congrats on your loss. It might be small but you are so right about it
being in the right direction.

I also think its a good NSV that you're beginning to figure out what
your body actually needs to lose weight (especially important given that
we're all individuals). I personally think eating near the top of your
range and greatly increasing exercise is the way to go - not just for
weight-loss, but as part of this whole lifestyle change that we're all
trying to achieve.

I think your timidity is actually about trust - trusting that those who
say you can eat more and still lose weight are telling the truth. With
apologies to Dr Phil, trust is actually a decision you make. How about
making the decision to try what others have suggested for a set period
(say two weeks)? If we're wrong, and you don't lose more, you can go
back to Plan A.

Incidently, why are you trying not to eat for 2-2.5 hours before you go
to bed? If there a psychological reasons (i.e. you binge in the evening,
for instance), or heartburn issues, then that's a good plan: but if it's
because you believe you won't lose weight if you eat at night, then I
have to say there is no scientific evidence to support that. To quote
someone the other day "Your body doesn't know what time it is". It's a
big dieting myth that food is more fattening just before you go to bed
than when you wake up!

Good luck on this week's plan and I hope you see a more substantial loss
next week.

That is really great.

Congratulations, Melissa, on losing that .2 this week. You are finding,
just like the rest of us, that WW's is a learning process & we do make a
lot of mistakes - like not eating enough. Have fun learning out the
program & how you react to it ;-)

At the WW meeting they said that you need about 2 1/2 hours to digest
your food. They said while you are sleeping you are burning next to no
calories/energy/fat. So if you eat and then sleep you just sleeping
with that food.

Any truth to this in all of your (everyone here's) experience? I think
I had heard it before I joined WW.

>I had heard it before I joined WW.

I believe it's a belief that's been around since the 60s, but I suspect
it's one of those things that everyone *assumed* to be true but never
tested.

It is true that digestion can take a couple of hours, but I'm not aware
of digestion being any more or less efficient when you're asleep as
opposed to when you're awake! (Except that digestion is extremely
*inefficient* during hard physical activity, when you're hyper alert and
if you are stressed or frightened). In fact, it is a common experience
for people to fall asleep after a meal, particularly if they're tired.

[Note: efficient digestion isn't about how many calories you absorb, its
also about nutrients and the removal of toxins, so inefficient digestion
is never a good thing for more than a couple of hours.]

It is true that you burn off few calories while you're asleep. However,
you also don't eat a lot while you sleep! ;o) What matters is your total
calorie intake over 24 hours (and more), not when you eat them. As an
example, my sister, who's 6' tall and built like a model, has for years
eaten dinner at 8.30pm and gone to bed at 10pm. On WW, I always have a
supper of a couple of points, immediately before I go to bed, and I'm
losing steadily a couple of points a week (so far!).

I don't believe expressions like "sleeping with your food" have much
basis in science, but I do know that in the old days, patients who'd
lost too much weight (through illnesses like TB) were virtually force-
fed and then giving sleeping tablets, in the mistaken belief it would
help them gain weight!

However, everyone is different and if you find it problematic, don't do
it! Similarly, if you're the sort of person who gets too hungry at night
so you can't sleep, and then sneak down to the fridge and binge, maybe a
light supper just before bed would be a good idea.

That's what I like about the WW's system - it suits all sorts! ;o)

Thanks! I don't typically eat right before bed, but many times it is within
a couple of hours. Don't have to feel bad about it now. :) I'll see what
works for me and go with that.

.2 is still a loss, and those little ones all add up over time. Try not to
compare your weekly weightlosses yet, you haven't really been on the program long
enough to know if the difference in losses is due to the amount of points you
consumed, what you ate, or original water retention. Your stats look like you
lost over 7 pounds the first week, some of that will be fat loss but much of it
will be water. Give it a few more weeks to balance out, then you'll get a better
picture of what is going on.

Personally, I think it's all a crock! <Grin> I've lost what I think is a good
amount of weight - 86+ pounds - yet ALWAYS have something to eat in the evening,
usually right before going to bed. I save points for my late night munchies,
usually have some fruit and maybe some meringue cookies. I haven't noticed that
this has hindered my progress in the least.

I usually have some type of snack before I go to bed (usually an hour or two
before). If I don't, I find that I sometimes wake up, unable to go back to
sleep, and I'm more tempted by cookies, or other sweets.

It is so weird that you need to eat at the top to lose but I don't even
get.2 if I don't stay right up there, but in the end it is reassuring that
you can actually eat and lose. I always eat the minimum and at the end of
the week I use the banked points for a treat like PBJ or a wendy's burger,
good luck you are doing grand, Lee

I heard this also but I figured out for me that if I did not have the snack
I would do worse if I woke up ravenous. I had originally tried to do
without my bedtime snack because I thought it would help me to want
breakfast more. Also, My Grandfather was diabetic and his Doctor
recommended a snack at bedtime so his sugar would be more stable at night.
It really helped his sleep. Lee, who thinks this is an area where we all
have to try different things and do what works best for us as individuals,

I forgot to say that I tried not to eat before bedtime and it was a
disaster. I was waking up at night and eating... really bad when I am half
asleep/ now I take a snack to bed and if I do not eat it those are my banked
points. Lee

I don't sleep well if I go to bed hungry, or too full. It has to be just
right, so I eat a small snack before bed time.
