I'm seriously thinking about entering a couple of walking
marathons. There is one on August 25th & one at the end of
September. The 1st one you can choose the full marathon, a half
marathon, or a 10K. The 2nd one is a 10K only. I haven't been
doing as much walking as I did before, as I try to do a variety
of cardio, including my elliptical & my new bike. The most I ever
walked at one shot was 5 miles, I believe. I can do the Leslie
Sansone 3 & 2 mile videos back to back, which is 1:15 of exercise
time. I'm pretty sweaty after that, but don't have "rubber legs".
Last night I went to our local walking trail & did the 1st mile
in 16.5 minutes, rested for a couple of minutes, & then did the
2nd mile in 15 minutes even. I was a bit sweaty & it was hot
here. I woke up at 4am with nasty pains in the front of my lower
left leg. My right calf was also achy. This went away by 9am or
so. I wonder if this was shin splints that I hear people talk
about? I do admit to not stretching before the walk as it was
getting dark & I wanted to see how fast I could do the mile.
Perhaps this happenned because I did not stretch. I have never
had this problem after any of the LS videos. I wondered how
realistic is it for me to do the half marathon at the end of
August? Perhaps I should just do both as 10K's, I don't know. I
like to have a fitness goal I can strive for...something that can
be done, but yet is not a piece of cake. It's hard to say what my
current fitness level is. I still have approx. 75 lbs to lose & I
exercise nearly daily, including ST e/o day. I can do an hour on
the elliptical...it's getting easier, but I'm still pretty sweaty
when I get done. Any hints or suggestions? Thanks!!!!
Kelly

Are ya training for fat loss or are you training for endurance(i.e.
marathon)? If training for fat loss, then I suggest HIIT/fartlek for
cardio. If you are training for a walking marathon, best way to train for
one is to just walk.

Kelly I applaud you efforts to want to do a race, good for you. I would
think a full marathon might be a little too much with little time left to
train. Even though you have been doing the elliptical trainer and walking
trails it isn't the same terrain you will be doing in a race. Here are some
sites that may help you with what sounds like shin splints.

It's great that you want to do the walking marathons, Kelly J. I want to do
that eventually, too. If it were me, I'd probably do them both as 10K for
this year. Then next year maybe you'll be ready to do the full marathon.
Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Thanks, Alan. I'm not neccesarily doing it to lose fat, but more
to attain better overall levels of fitness & to have a goal &
accomplish that goal. I NEVER exercised before last November, so
for me, this would be a major accomplishment....one that I can be
proud of. I will check out your link. As always, thank you for
your assistance.

I agree, Roxan. I was trying to decide between the half marathon
& the 10K on the one in August. The one is September is only a
10K. To enter a full marathon would be folly. :-) I will be
checking out your links on the shin splints. Thanks Fitness

Thanks, Joy. I am kinda leaning towards doing both as 10K's this
year, but I still have a few more weeks to decide & then get
registered for the August event. I'm somewhat nervous, but
excited, too!

I would agree that 10kms for both will still be a fantastic achievement and
then you can gradually build up to doing half and then full walking
marathons as your fitness increases and you look for new challenges.
Congratulations on keeping up all the exercise.
