I used the Complete Food Companion as the basis of my information.
Tonight, looking for a point friendly dinner after an "off the charts
lunch" I saw my bag of bagels and figured, ah, yes, pickled herring.
That led to actually reading its NUTRIENT label to compare to the
book. This is a variety sold at least locally by Costco
120 calories, 5 grams of fat for a drained 1/4 cut which is 2.82
points and more than 5 for the 1/2 cup the book suggests is 2 points.
I apologize if I suckered anyone in but, frankly, having it about
twice a week has not done me harm, I don't think.
So, your choice but after more, if not necessarily, better
information.
Fred
So much for my plan to liberate pickled herring from the Christmas hors
d'oevres tray. It was a nice fantasy while it lasted. (Maybe I'll buy just a
teeny-tiny jar and have some on a whole wheat, fat-free cracker.)
Thanks, Fred, for posting a correction. All is forgiven.

[PR] If it is, I haven't found it. What I sometimes use is a recipe
calculator I downloaded from http://www.recipecalc.com/. It's shareware: It
costs $24 after 20 days trial use. The built-in database, to which you can
add ingredients, is the National Nutrient database. You still have to
calculate the points after you've looked up an ingredient, but the program
does calculate the nutrient values for any serving size. That's a big help
to math-phobes like me.

Yes, on Joyce's recommendation, I got some software that is sitting
idle as I sort out my dsl and new wireless network stuff as well as
hiring a new secretary.

I don't think it's discontinued, think it is now marketed by a different company.
I do know it is no longer available in MAC format but you may be able to scrounge
up a copy from ebay. Here's a link to the site I found of the current
manufacturer ... sells the program for $10.

[PR] After Fred posted the name, I searched and found it at the same place
you're referring to. With a price tag of $9.99, I wondered if it was the
same software since home-grown recipe software apps are running 2-1/2 times
that amount. So thanks for the confirmation that I'd found the right one.
I'll probably spend some time getting acquainted with it this weekend.

NYC can be that way. I miss it only occasionally but when I do go
back (very infrequently) I'm kind of shocked and then get into its
rhythm and dynamics and have a blast. But then in some way, it is

You can use it's signature feature or you can use its PASTE signature
feature. The first, places it all the way at the end of the message
and only after you post - so you don't see it. Whereas the second
places it right there at the current location and you see it go in

Yes, I used FREE AGENT until about two weeks ago when I paid for the
upgrade.
As I wrote in another Thread, Netscape would automatically run java
code and that sometimes created visual havoc (spammers) altho, never
any real damage. A friend, a programmer, suggested Agent. I liked
its abilities but changing takes getting use to. I've become more of
a stick in the mud and tend to stay with my OLD friends - that is
programs that work and I know how to use them. Agent seemed okay at
first glance.
It does allow multiple signatures altho I'm not sure that I found a
way to automatically pick one for say alt.ww versus the gps group but
it might be there. I did not experiment with sigs until the other day
(G)
And now that explains "JAWS!" (G)
Agent has its own newsgroup, too:
alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent
I got some answers to setting up two ISP's news servers. And that's
where I found I would have to move all the Agent data and not just
some point or index file between the laptop/desktop.
The same friend suggested The Bat for email and I pretty much have
adopted that in the last 2 weeks also. I think www.ritlabs.com just
in case you again, have nothing other than laundary and dishwasher
emptying to do. (G)

Hmmm. I like it is probably all I can say. You can get smaller jars
in some locations but each brand varies in sweetness or pickling.
I'm salivating just thinking about it this morning (G)
Pickled herring has a, well, a pickled taste.
After all the recent posts on the topic, I had herring on my brain.
Yesterday I finally gave in and bought a jar. For lunch today, I fixed
Fred's hiking lunch: pickled herring on a bagel. Since I wasn't hiking, I
followed the suggested serving size on the label and limited myself to 2 oz.
of herring for 2.1 points, according to my points calculator.
I savored every bite.

I've only found the multiple sig to be an option if using the paste signature option. The box pops
up and you can select which sig you want to use. Soooo, make a few up, label one ww, one agent,
whatever - then when pasting the sig just choose which one you want to use. Probably not the

I still prefer Netscape over Internet Explorer but generally only the
browser part. I'm using what's termed a compact version - none of the
Instant messaging stuff and lot's else cut out. But they tweaked too
much in Netscape and I hate the SEARCH Bookmark function.

There is a new version of Eudora since I was comparing that against
The Bat. I could not get comfortable with Eudora's personalities
quickly enough and MY personalities are quirky enough!
The Bat shows attached jpg's in a separate tabbed window. But,
frankly, using two dos programs for email up till now really limited
much. Now I can see the attachments, can fire up some link a friend
sends, forward and reply to a group easily and cc and bcc to my hearts
content (G) Friends were complaining but, at least, I did not send
superfluous html and xxx.dat files like some of those MS programs.

OKAY!!!!!!!!!! Isn't it wonderful. It really does not take much to
be satisfying - all that flavor (and healthy oils) packed into those
little morsels of herring.

It does do what you want it to do. My newsgroups are set up to

I seem to be the opposite. I used to be extremely loyal to the netscape browser
... am no longer as I find IE browser much more stable. The netscape browser
inevitably will lock up my computer or do funky stuff, usually not worth the
impending headaches. I'm not an IM fan, but will admit to using it. It allows me
to chat a bit with my son (when he can get connected ... if he can stay
connected). If not chatting, I at least can see that he is alive and well,

Agreed! Everything tends to be a hassle though, at least for me. Someone did
post instructions for using multiple sigs, but like you - I don't like how they
automatically post all the way down at the bottom of the page. And in Agent, you
don't have the option of cutting and pasting the sigs like you do in netscape -
can't see it until after you hit send.

LOL! You suffer from those multiple personalities too? I thought that was just a
female thing. <g> I might have to look at the new Eudora, gave up waiting for a
new version long ago. I'm not even sure what I'm looking for, if anything ...

I do want to avoid any program that automatically opens attachments, has been nice
so far in avoiding viruses/worms that always seem to be floating around. The only
complaint I tend to get from my friends is that I am too darned slow in replying
to emails. I still have one from over a year ago sitting patiently in my inbox
... with about 50 other more recent ones. I admit to being bad in that
department. <g>
Think of it as an enforced way to bottom post :) Although top-posting does
seem to be the norm in this group - we'd be flamed into oblivion anywhere
else!

Well, work has abandoned support for Netscape. While we are permitted
to use it, they won't help if there are any problems. And I've got
problems on the work win98 - it bogs down almost constantly and
Netscape makes it even worse. But I still don't like Favorites!

Agent does have Edit/PasteSignature (I don't know if that's in Free
Agent?) where it will place your chosen signature at the current
location as follows:

I did not quite understand its nomenclature. I never could quite get

Agent supports bottom posting. I guess it's to encourage that and to
encourage you to snip any unnecessary quoted material. I like it that
way :-)
Okay, I see that Agent is focused on the bottom posting. I usually
try intermixing my response and cutting excess. But Agent does have
an Edit/PasteSig menu command and I've found the toolbar button to do
it also - when I remember (G)

I've heard that most everyone has stopped netscape support, guess this program is
also going to be used less frequently. I've gotten used to the favorites in IE,
don't see much difference anymore than in netscapes bookmark system. With the
exception of that danged *links* folder - that refuses to stay gone no matter how
many times I delete it.

Yup, that's what I've been using. I don't think the option is available in Free
Agent though. Right now I'm using the trial version, which is actually Agent ...
I have 3 weeks to decide if I want to pay the extra for it or revert to netscape.
Another decision to be made.

I know, I know - emails should be answered ... I'm just horribly slow. I try to
save them for when I have time to think straight - then it never happens. And
there are just so many of them. <G> Kind of like this newsgroup, is awfully hard

MS knows what we need and will force it down out throats! The pizza
dinner (there it is again) was actually with a group of friends that
started out on a bbs about 10+ years ago. We started getting together
at an occasional party. Then as bbsing faded, we turned it into
alternating breakfast and lunch with an occasional dinner event. One
of the women got into computers due to geneology. We still have a
terrific time. But have moved beyond computers to all kinds of
general stuff.

Funny about Agent. I think this was their first foray into allowing
all functions for a limited time. So that if you opted for some
functions like changing the tool bar, the extra functions remained
even after the evaulation. Unfortunately, they fixed that glitch! (G)
But I then decided I did like the functions and so registered. I've
decided I'm never going to retire anyway so might as well earn and
spend!

Join the picked herring fan club! (G) Maybe we should start our own
challenge. At the former significant other's family (she was Swedish,
well, still is) Christmas events - yup. And glug, too!
Please recall that I am not sure about the points value. It may be
more but it is healthy. Just don't over do until you figure out
yourself (G) But it does taste good.

Saving pickled herring for Christmas must be a Swedish thing. It was my
Swedish relatives who reserved it for Christmas too. But since they were
also Baptist, there wasn't any Akvavit. All these years I've been missing
out!
>Please recall that I am not sure about the points value.
On the WW site, 1/2 cup of pickled herring is listed at 2 points. Change the
portion size to 4 oz, and the calculation jumps to 4.5 points. When I was in
school, 1 cup = 8 oz.; therefore 1/2 cup = 4 oz. Maybe it's New Math. Or
maybe in this case, the distinction is volume versus weight. Anyway, to be
safe, I use a food scale instead of a measuring cup. One of these days I'll
get around to finding out how much 1/2 cup of pickled herring weighs (and
vice versa).

All this talk of pickled herring has me curious. Where do you buy them?
Regular grocery stores? If so, what part of the store are they typically
found in?
If you try it, be sure to report whether you like it.

The distinction may be weight versus the measuring cup. But the
Costco jar does indicate the higher points after using a Points
Calculator then the WW book. When I stall, I will examine all these
issues more carefully. But I also know that WW is not Atkins - there
are no forbidden foods and I will not give up my picked herring.
Altho, I have limited very substantially the herring in (sour) cream
sauce! (g)
Your group sounds like a lot of fun. I met a bunch of people 5 years ago, through

It was okay. Limited my points. Enough so that I did it again the
next night. The one after was my cooking - some shrimp, veggies in
an oil-free stir fry. Shrimp are terrific - nearly pointfree! (G)

Ahum ! Time to fess up here : every time I visit the US I bring a Beanie
baby back home :-) I discovered them 10 years ago (we don't have them here)
and thought they were so funny ! So I guess I 'm one of those weirdo's - lol

LOL! And I was afraid to even mention them. My kids started me on them, back
before anyone ever heard of them. The creator used to visit our local Hallmark
store and beg them for free shelf space to see if he could find a market. Wow,
how long ago was that? LOL You wouldn't believe what they used to have. I say
*used to* because when the craze hit hard they sold their played with/tagless toys
off ... and made some danged good money. Who would ever think a stilly stuffed
animal would pull in over $900!

That was an option, not one she was thrilled with. I played a game with her, had
the boy take pictures of himself in various positions while holding a sign that
said *Cassie's mom, I am real*. Made him email them within a few minutes time -
figured it was a close enough option to somewhat verify that he wasn't some old
kook looking for little girls. He also lives towards the city (Lake Forest, I
think) so have asked him to take the train out and visit one day. I don't think
I'm being unreasonable here - she does. I remember living through those trusting
youth years also, probably drove my mom nuts with all the stupid things I did ...

I made the same thing last week, used scallops instead of shrimp cuz daughter has
a current aversion to shrimp. <G> Not quite point free, but still logged in at
under 4 points for a heavy sized portion. Load it up with veggies and you can get
away with lots. The sauce was a tad heavy on the sodium, but it sure was good and
will be made again.

Good scheme there. I think it sounds reasonable in this day and age.
Just tell her "this odd, old guy I'm chatting with agrees!!!!" That
should go over well.

It sounds like it.

I should do scallops. I really like them but I don't think Costco has
larger bags of them (G)
If I told them I was chatting with an odd old guy, they would just assume I meant
*dad* - no one is older or odder than him! <G>

And how big do you need? I buy them at Sam's Club or Trader Joes - think they are
about 1.5 pounds maybe?
