Ever since I joined weight watchers I have been doing nothing but spending
money. (It seems so anyway)

I paid for 10 weeks and the extras which came to about 139 bucks...then I
joined eTools for another 13 bucks a month...and of course WW magazine...

And now I learn about FitDay....And the palm software to track points...

Any comments?

Monica,

My thoughts . . .

Weight Watcher's is a business, they have a very good and healthy plan
for losing weight, but they are in it for the profit. I have given
them countless dollars over the years.

FitDay is free. And I assume they support themselves by the various
ads on their page. The palm software was written by a WW fan and
distributed for free until WW asked that distribution stop, which is
their right according to patent and copyright law.

Currently I am not a WW member, nor am I currently counting points. I
am using Fitday and tracking my food and eating mostly healthy food in
reasonable quantities ( something I hadn't done in years, thus the
weight gain). Doing this I have so have lost 18 lbs. Finding this
newsgroup has helped. It is a sort of virtual meeting.

If you feel you need the support of the WW meetings and weigh-ins, I
don't think its a huge price to pay to become healthier. It will
certainly cost less than the potential medical problems associated
with not becoming healthier.

Decide which bits of the WW stuff you really need to help you stick
with it, if you can replace any of them with free offerings you can
save some cash. (Might want to see if your library carries the
magazine). And continue your journey . . .

The FitDay website only tracks calories, not points. (I believe it's Foodcount.com that also tracks points; but it's a paid site if you use it for your daily journal.) I've been using FitDay because I'm very interested in getting more of my nutrients from the foods I eat rather than supplements; FitDay helps me keep on top of that. FitDay also has a basal metabolism calculator and I've been using that feature to find the right level of daily calories for my menopausal metabolism. So it has been a way of fine-tuning the WW program for me--takes a lot more time than just journaling points, but it's been helpful.

The Palm software is a handy way to keep your WW journal -- but it doesn't teach you about the WW program. So the money you've spent for the meetings and other tools is a good investment. That's where you'll learn all the WW info, and if later on you want to cancel the meetings and just "free-lance," then you'll be armed with the knowledge you need for success. Some people are successful without the weekly meetings; others don't seem to be able to stay motivated and keep on track without them.

WW is a great thing for learning how to live a healthy life style, hence
agree that it is a great business for consumers and all business is in it
for profit.

After taking the "tour" of Fitday, it does not seem to meet any of my needs
at the moment. Since I am new to WW, I think I need more of the specific WW
content.

I don't go anywhere without my palm and it keeps me (time and info) on
track. I am not sure that I would want to sub it for the great journal on
etools. Maybe if I was out and needed to jot something down?? Since I can
be on etools at work as well, I am pretty much covered in this area of
journaling....

As for the meetings, well, since it is only my 2nd week, I find myself
(right now anyway) looking forward to the weigh in....

Although I find this ng more rewarding then the meeting itself.

I have as well spent countless dollars trying to lose weight and have
commited my self to eat and be healthy. Although food sometimes gets the
best of me.

I think after the 10 weeks are over I will reflect on my situaltion and make
a decision then.

Thanks for your take on it. I was just curious.what everyone thought.

Your right Connie, I think that the info and content of WW is what I need most right now.  After I have a lifestyle change where my eating is concerned, I might could utitilize the other "free" tools available.  I downloaded the palm software and I am curious if I could use it....Thanks for your take...

Debra,

Looks like WW had Bob discontinue offering the download, even though
free. If anyone has already downloaded WWCalc, I'd appreciate it if
you'd email me a copy.

CHERYL: I have been on/off WW for more years than I care to count;
but, the bottom line is -- you do what you can afford to do and what
works for you...

CHERYL: For me, paying the 10 weeks and going to the meetings is
worth it as well as 'some' of their products like the 1/2 cup, 1 cup
(no one knows but you) serving spoons & electronic food scale (with
ounces & grams). Hindsight being 20-20, I probably would not have
bought so many of their cookbooks - especially with this newsgroup and
DWLZ in service; I guess I'm just attracted to the pretty pictures.

The free Palm journal software is great (journal entries, activity
points, banking points, export features, all included) as well as the
Palm Restaurant lists with points. I carry my Palm with me everywhere
and people can't tell that I'm journaling or looking up the point
value for something; from their standpoint, I could just be checking
my calendar.
E-Tools would not suit me because it requires the use of my home
computer. I don't want to be tied to that; I want to take WW with
me. If I have to journal on paper then transfer it to a computer,
it's not something that I can see myself doing for the rest of my
life. One of things that I did this year was to truly looked at MY
lifestyle and I got tools that fit that. As for the WW magazine, I
like it... but not enough to subscribe to it. I get more valuable
information just talking to ASDWW!

> And now I learn about FitDay....And the palm software to track
points...

CHERYL: For me, I would put FitDay and E-Tools in the same category
whether they are free or not, for the reasons mentioned above. But,
let me state, it is good for MY lifestyle. It does not mean that
FitDay/E-Tools would not be great for others. I am sure that there
are several here who use FitDay or some other tools to support their
weight loss efforts. So, as I said at the beginning of my response...
bottom line... it's what works for you.

Re: eToolsThis newsgroup and others are scanned periodically.
Eventhough, software was free, Bob was forced to remove it from that
software download site. Hopefully posting his link here will not
cause him problems.

Check out Dotti's website -- she's got a way you can download her entire restaurant list. You also have to download the free Silo reader for the Palm.
