I thought I would have better control and had planned to stay on program as
much as possible, but it was like being in the middle of a food orgy for six
days, everyone seemed to know exactly my favorite foods.
Once in a while I was able to do something smart--I remember washing garlic
butter and sour cream mashed potatoes down the drain after a few bites when
I could tell I was about to eat all the leftovers (3-4 cups) rather than put
it in the fridge for my hosts. Their fridge was groaning from so much
leftover party food that they were probably glad--I seemed to be the only
one in the house who was enamored with the garlic mashed potatoes anyway. I
just knew it was do or die, wash them down the sink or I would get up late
at night and eat them in the fridge, and they would never know either way,
no one else seemed to even care about that particular plate. Probably
because they were so busy gobbling up éclairs.
But they had millions of little delicacies, I won't even name them all
because I might get somebody's taste buds going. They spared no expense.
It was a wonderful party, we all cried, and their church was great. It's
Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ church in downtown Cleveland,
and they've been written up a lot as an example of two things--a mainstream
church that decided to go "open and affirming" for gays and lesbians, and as
a gigantic cathedral historic church that is being restored slowly to great
beauty while other inner city churches are allowed to deteriorate.
Our friends had about 70 people from the congregation, all ages, gay and
straight, kids, all dancing together. The pastor is a woman who recently
adopted a baby girl from China, and the girl is adorable. Very shy, but she
danced with us, too. The pastor's husband is an attorney, and he was
wonderful, too. When the pastor was hired there were 35 members of the
church; today there are 500, about 100 open gays and lesbians.
These two friends met at a small religious college in Ohio and have been
together 40 years, even teaching together in the same school for 30 years
while staying in the closet the whole time. I could never stay in any
closet, I was in trouble back in the '50s when I kept trying to come out.
Their teacher peers showed up for the party too and these friends hadn't
known they were a couple until after they stopped teaching.
Imagine being married to someone for 40 years and working next to them day
after day and never being able to tell anyone you were married or barely
knew each other or you would be fired and lose most of your friends. At
least those days of oppression are ending. At least in big cities.
So I ate far too much and I somehow mixed up my pills when I was packing and
was taking two digitalis and no diuretic and so was light-headed and bloated
all week. But I survived and am back on track today.
Oh, the good part--these friends hadn't seen me since April and they
immediately said, "You've lost so much weight! You're practically skinny!"
They were the first people to notice so far besides my partner. E everybody
around the park all summer has seen me every day, and I still have so much
to lose that I don't really think it's that noticeable, though I do see it
in my clothes and level of activity. It was great to have somebody notice
immediately! When all the snowbirds come back this winter, I expect others
will notice, too, if they haven't seen me since spring when I started.
I had a lot more energy than in the past and was able to dance a lot! I
used to love to dance. Maybe my new exercise will be fast dancing. I was
thinking about that before and looking for videos of "Sweating to the
Oldies" but got sidetracked from the search. Richard Simmons' web site
doesn't have the old ones, he has a new video exercise program. I want the
dancing.
As I gained during the six days I could tell immediately, my ankles started
to hurt again and I had trouble breathing and my energy level went kaput by
the end. What a difference even a few pounds makes. Enough of a difference
that I couldn't wait to get back on the program today! I am absolutely not
going to go anywhere near a scale until Nov. 24!
Sorry I had to erase the 1100 messages that were waiting for me. No way
could I have read that many, but I'm sorry if I missed anything that
somebody wanted to share specifically with me. If you posted something you
wanted me to see in the past six days, please send a copy to me directly by
a-mail. I'm glad to be back!

I never think in terms of gays and lesbians being different or odd.
Thankfully neither to my kids.
Cute story:
One thanksgiving my mom was having the family for dinner. It was the Friday
after Thanksgiving and my dad had gone to work. I was sitting in a chair in
the family room with my kids laying on the floor watching TV. On one corner
of the couch is my aunt and her partner. On the other corner of the couch
is my brother and his partner (they have since split up). Both couples are
cuddled up... and we are all just kibbitzing around.
My mother walks into the doorways wiping her hands on a dishtowel and says:
"Oh this is a lovely picture, but when Arthur gets home (my dad) we have to
go back to the 50's".
I always wonder why people refuse to see humor in their lives in all things
because it's there.
again I am so glad you had a good time.
