Hey, all --

Since funds are tight and a gym isn't an option, I'd like to fill my
Christmas wish list with some workout videos. Frankly, alternating
treadmill and Richard Simmons is getting a little boring!

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm interested in getting a pilates
tape but since I've never taken a class I don't know if there is a good one
out there for true beginners. The same with kick-boxing. Any good tapes
out there for that?

More specifically, has anyone tried the The New York City Ballet Workout? I
just don't want to get it if it seems like something that I really couldn't
do. I've never done ballet but I think I'd like the music. :-)

Also, I once bought one of those funk workouts and I never got past the
first 15 minutes since all they did was spend time teaching steps. I never
got to the actual workout. I'd rather trip over myself trying than spend a
bunch of good exercise time just working on steps. Does that make sense?

My girlfriend has the Walk Away the Pounds tapes. I've never seen them but
she seems to think that they are too Mickey Mouse.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Amy,

I liked the Walk Away the Pounds tapes when I was doing them, but they do
get repetitive after awhile. Maybe you can borrow your friend's tapes and
give them a try? Have you tried Tae Bo? You might like that.

Do you have a library card? They often have ones you can borrow. Also, some
stores like Blockbuster have rentals. You can also record some of the
exercise shows on TV and use them. I think Denise Austin and Body Electric
are two choices, but there are probably a lot more.

I don't have any other suggestions, except take a look at amazon.com for
reviews or collagevideo.com for lots of exercise videos.

Good luck and let us know what you get!

Amy,

I decided to go the video route myself, and on eBay, in the last
week, I scored:

1) a set of 3 Richard Simmons tapes;
2) Rodney Yee's AM/PM Yoga tapes (2);
3) a Fonda aerobic tape (several people have suggested I just got
that cuz it's her! They may be right! LOL)
4) Dance Fever - aerobics featuring the Motown Sound; and
5) Walk and Stretch Aerobics for Seniors - the surgeon says
stretching, walking, and toning are the best things I can do,
without further injury to my back.

These 8 videos would have been US$150+ new, over a hundred from
Amazon. I got them for about $25. total. Even with the shipping
I'm waaaaaay ahead!

I'd recommend to *anyone,* get to eBay, do a search for "exercise
videos," "aerobic videos," or "Yoga" depending on what interests
you. There are *hundreds* of tapes at any given time, and most
often you can get them for a pittance! The other neat thing is
that with most of the popular ones, if you lose the bidding on
one, there will be six more of the same thing in a few days.

If anybody wants help with buying on eBay, give me a holler
off-list. I'll be glad to help you through the process. It's
easy, and it's fun.

Another option is half.com. They have good prices but no bidding. You just
look up what you are after and go from there. I got my WATP dvds from
there, after trying them from the library. They have new and used things so
take note of what the descriptions say!
