My partner is going to be gone from 6 pm Monday night until late Wednesday
night, and she and I are both climbing the walls, not wanting her to go.
It's a twice-yearly trip to New Hampshire to get some insurance papers
signed by the original doctor who treated her first heart attack and saved
her life three times.
She hates flying, and I hate being alone. This is the first time we've had
a cell phone, that newfangled invention, so it will be easier to communicate
this time. Last trip she called me from the plane, a first for me!
To stop from eating every minute she's gone, I am going to paint all day
long both days on a mural I started at our RV park. It is the backdrop for
the stage wall, 8 feet by 20 feet, and it has the Superstition Mountains as
the backdrop and a desert landscape with flowering cacti in the foreground.
I've been painting on it since May and am 3/4 done on major scenery aspects
and then I have to go over the whole thing to touch up details, tie in
colors, blend rough edges, correct shadows, etc.
I took 16 art classes in high school, 1956-60, and the art teacher and
writing teacher were battling over which field I should enter. I figured I
had a better chance at fame and fortune in writing. I majored in English
and Journalism in college and concentrated on writing the past 40 years.
Three published mystery novels and thousands of articles later, I never made
a dent toward fame or fortune, and now I feel it is time to get back to the
art. Not that I expect fame or fortune at this late date, but painting is
something really relaxing and fulfilling for me now.
I owned a ceramics store in rural Michigan and did do a lot of paintings in
glazes that won some ribbons, and I have to admit, I got more satisfaction
over selling a piece of art than I did selling a magazine article, even if I
made more from the article.
Kind of as a joke, I volunteered to paint a mural on the stage backdrop when
the activities director had the area painted and it looked blah. Next thing
I knew, she's announcing to the community meeting that I am painting a
mural! And so I am. It is one of the highs of my life.
My partner Norma had to do the sky, clouds and ladder work because I could
not go up on a ladder. She has taken a lot of art classes too, but her main
art interest is quilting and using the computer to design embroidery designs
for T-shirts with her fancy new computerized sewing machine.
The nights that I paint, I have no urge to eat. That should tell me
something! Doe, do you find the same thing?
Your painting is so lovely, I hope we can see more of them. I wish I could
figure out how to do a web page to put my mural on so you could see it. I
have a digital photo of it half done, just the mountains completed.
I know if I just sat down with a book and the help menus on Microsoft
Publisher I could probably figure it out, but computers still scare me, even
though we've owned at least one for nearly 20 years now. (Anybody remember
the Kaypro? CPM?)
Norma is the computer expert in our family--she took a class in building
your own computer and then built our two current ones! But she's never done
anything with starting a web page, either. Oh well, time to bite the bullet
soon and figure out that challenge, too.
By the way, while Norma is in New Hampshire she will have two meals of fresh
lobster! A third the price and much better quality than anything passing
for lobster in Phoenix! I am so jealous.
I am trying not to spend every moment thinking about everything I would like
to eat while she is away! We have never been apart more than two days at a
time in 21+ years. Not that we're dependent on each other or anything.
And I do have a Shih Tzu dog and two cats to keep me company, and 30 women
in the RV park I could reach out to if it weren't so hot. I'll see them at
night in the pool anyway. Expect even longer than usual posts from me
through Wednesday, if you can imagine such a thing!

Thanks, Carol. I did have a painting class of one semester in highschool. But,
then married and raised 4 kids. But I have always wanted to paint...it was just
that home and family came first. I have to have no interruptions in order to
paint. It's just a kind of mental thing with me. Then after kids were in
school I went to work part time at the school, then church secretary. I had to
leave that job after 9 years to care for elderly parents. When they passed away
I finally found the time to go to a painting class at the senior center. But
oil painting does have some expenses!...so I went to work part time at a
financial office. That job left town and then I took this job at the senior
center of Senior Care Program Director. I hire workers to do homecare for 60
and over who qualify for state assist. My painting class resumes Aug.24th.

The mural sounds magnificant! Do take a pic and let us see it.

Some people don't realize the time and expense put into a painting. Sounds as
if you have lot of hours in this one!

I guess the arts are in your blood. : ) English was my major, but I succumbed
to a *very* handsome guy a grade ahead of me and so never made it beyond a few
hours at our local community college. I was 17!! I haven't been sorry
though...we have been married for 44 years and we had 3 boys and adopted a
girl. But all this did make painting take a back seat. The kids and I did do
a lot of creative things (art forms) together as part of their school activites.

I was still considered a beginner by the fair book even though I sold one
painting...since I don't make a living that way. I am still giving them
away...don't know if I can bear to sell them...they are like my kids! : ) I
have taken pictures of all of them. The one I sold was a deer in a meadow with
a broken rail fence in the foreground. I would have liked to keep it....but
needed the funds for more supplies and that is the one they picked!

That sounds like a big undertaking....but very rewarding.

Well.....uh...actually ....my classmates sometimes bring goodies. : ) Not
regularly though. I only have/take time to paint once a week from 9-12. About
11:30...those treats can be very tempting. I am glad they are just occasional.

Our son sends digital photos of the grandkids. You are welcome to send one to
my email addy.

I haven't been into computers for long...a little when I worked at the church
and that was an old MS Word. Then again at the financial office and that was
mostly MS Word and financial programs. I am quite ignorant about anything
more. I do some MS publisher for cards and our church bulletin.

My oldest grandson built my computer! I am so proud of him. He was born with a
vision problem and started keyboarding at about 6. He is *extremely* near
sighted. Computers have been his life. He started a job today with a salary of
61,000 plus benefits! I am truly amazed! He is only 21. At 19 he was salaried
at 40,000.

You will probably be shocked to learn I have never even eaten lobster!!

I have an 8 lb poodle...1.5 years old and a real cutie. She fetches our daily
paper. Poodles are born retrievers!
