I tried working the program 1 to 2 years ago on my own, not being a Weight
Watchers member. This newsgroup was my sole support.. The support here is
great, but a little too anonymous behind the computer screen. I needed the
accountability I will now have: I joined a local Weight Watchers group last
night and went to my first meeting.
I recently had angioplasty and 4 stents put in, and my doctor suggested I
try a support group like Weight Watchers to help me lose the 70 pounds I
need to lose. He knows my record of starting out losing the weight like a
gangbuster and then having the wheels fall of the bus.
I recognize many of the names here, and remember all your great advice and
support. For those of you with really good memories, I went by the name
"scutter" back then. Still do, but just don't sign that way any more. I am
up to 237 pounds now, I'd be happy with anything under 170. 160-165 is my
overall goal.
Anyway, I am quite determined this time, and want to use any and all
resources at my disposal to succeed. That's why I am here. To that end, I
have an exercise question. In my materials I see nothing about how to
calculate exercise points. Am I missing something? I bought the starter kit
and the Quick-Trak Diary in addition to the starter materials they give you.
I have searched the WW web site, and can only find the e-tools exercise
calculator which is extra $$$. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance, and it will be good to chat with you folks again.

It's given out a week 3. As I understand it, it's 1
point per 100 calories burned, but don't quote me on that.
Circe
Correct on both accounts. Here's a good site to help you calculate the
number of calories burned so that you can figure out the points earned:

Great site. Thanks for the addy. I just wish Curves had
given up their data.

For curves, most people count it as moderate exercise as part of the time is
light and the last half is heavy.
From a previous post:
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) defines exercise
intensity by percentage of maximum heart rate, rate of perceived
exertion, and METS (metabolic equivalents) in their Position Stand,
Recommended Quantity and Quality of Exercise for Development and
Maintenance of Cardiorespiratory and Muscular Fitness and Flexibility
in Healthy Adults. Moderate activity has been defined as 55 - 69
percent of maximum heart rate (MHR). ACSM defines "hard" exercise at
70 - 89 percent MHR, and "very hard" at 90 percent and above, with 100
percent being maximal exertion.
To calculate MHR, subtract one's age from 220. To determine the lower
end of moderate intensity, multiply MHR by 55 percent or 0.55;
multiply MHR by 69 percent or 0.69 to determine the higher end of the
moderate intensity range. These numbers represent heartbeats per
minute during moderate activity. As an example, for a thirty-year-old
person, the moderate intensity numbers would be:
220 - 30 = 190 (Maximum heart rate)
190 x 0.55 = 105 beats per minute (low end of moderate intensity)
190 x 0.69 = 131 beats per minute (high end of moderate intensity)
This calculation is built into the heartrate chart that Curves has on the
wall. You want to aim for your heartrate being in the 55 to 70 percent
range for it to be considered moderate exercise.

Yept, that's pretty much how I've been counting it. Thanks.
Circe
Lee, you do think the e-tools are worth it?
