I was dxed Type 1 12 years ago (I'm 43 now). I used to hang around
CompuServe's diabetes group in the early 90s, but I don't see anyone from
there here now, unfortunately. Someone mentioned IDDT's Bruce Beale a while
ago. He's a great guy, and I've enjoyed his hospitality several times on
trips to England. He gave me a Stone Age axe given him by the Prince of
Denmark (and there are pictures to prove it).
Some folks on CIS thought I had to be a Type II, because I was overweight at
dx. Four years later, I started a low-fat, regular exercise program and lost
70 lbs. My A1c was in the 6s. I've kept most of the weight off, and I still
exercise regularly, but I wouldn't say my diabetes is in control. The last
A1c was over 10 somewhere.
So I've abandoned the low-fat diet (after all these years) and am now
including fat in my meals. I think it's stabilizing my BGs, but I think
anytime you change your diet and start paying attention to what you eat that
your health in general will improve--for a while, at least. I've also
started testing 2 hours postprandially, and I can see that that's a big
help. Lately, I don't even test at mealtime, since the test two hours prior
should "guarantee" I'm OK then.
My dot.com finally bombed, so I'm going to try to be my own boss, write
great programs, and sell them. That's the idea, at least. My current project
is a diabetes logger for Palms, and it has some great unique features (I
need beta testers, if anyone's interested in a free copy).
I wrote a little freeware program called QuitTime, that's been downloaded a
lot, at least! You should see my web stats in January every year.
I used to work for Sierra On-Line, and Leisure Suit Larry is a close
personal friend of mine.
So that's me. I'm still making up my mind about this low-fat/low-carb
controversy. It finally dawned on me that many of the folks here talking
about "spikes" are T2s who aren't taking insulin! Sure, I'd be worried about
spikes if I couldn't bolus!! Anyway, I know I have a _lot_ to learn--the
important thing is that I realize that and am doing something about it!!!
No doubt you have already noticed that the majority of people here are
t2 ... but there are some very, very sharp t1s here who are extremely
knowledgeable about insulin and tight control.
I hope that you find this place helpful in your quest to manage the dm.

Welcome aboard Mark. Hope you are able to learn a thing or two here,
I sure have.
How's ole Larry doing these days? Has he given up the leisure suits

Thanks, Richard! I've started bouldering a rock in my yard. :)

Thanks! Though, like Richard, I wish there were a good nickname for you. Can
I call you "quarterlife," for short?

I'm learning good stuff from your posts.

No, at this stage in his life, he figures that polyester helps him keep.
I'd be happy to be a beta tester... I've tested lots of games and
software over the years. I've never done any Palm stuff, always waited
until the final version, but I'm willing. :-)

I remember the original version. Caused no end of water cooler

Thanks, Ana! If you (or anyone else) is interested, please send me your
email address, so I don't clutter up the group.
I wish you luck on your venture into your own business, but just hope yu

Hi Mark,
We've exchanged a few posts already. It's nice to see a formal introduction
post. I think that shows that you have been online for some time, this
habit seems to have all but disappeared.

I started posting there back in 93 or 94. We must have just missed each
other. I went back when it was opened up to Internet posters and am still
listed on the Sysop rooster (but have been sorely neglecting my duties).
You may recall John Davis from Detroit. He will post here on ocassion. Jim
Dumas was also quite active there but maybe not until later.

I hear that he has had some health issues lately. Last I heard he was doing
better.

My buddy! I lost track of Larry after his cruise (was that 6 or 7)? Were
there ever any more?

Hmmm. I can't really remember. Was there a Robin around? How about Brooke
Disbrow? Anyway, the important person was Dave Groves. I quit the forum
during my free Member of the Month month after receiving just one too many
expletive-laden emails from 'ol Dave. :)

I don't remember either, I'm afraid...what about Ben Westheimer?

We've rather lost touch. Bruce always has health issues, though. :( Sad, for
one of the pioneers of windsurfing.

Hehehe...:) I can't remember, honestly. For all I know, they're still
churning 'em out. When Al Lowe, the designer, started on the series, he
swore there'd never be a Leisure Suit Larry 4. So after LL3, he just skipped
4 and did LL5.

Leisure Suit Larry huh... hehehehe what a great series of games... I
crack up just thinking of it!! I used to fail the age test at the
beginning LOL (my US knowledge was terrible). The testing is key to
good hbA1cs IMHO. If you have the knowledge of how things affect you.
you can plan for it. I'm convinced that a balanced diet with care on
high carb foods is helpful too. To lose 70 lbs is excellent and shows
a lot of willpower!
good luck
