In Minnesota, a 16-week, YMCA class, part of a pilot program based on
a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study, has demonstrated success
in helping people exercise more, watch calories, and cut their
diabetes risk.
The results of the program, which was tested in a few states, showed
that the NIH's success could be done both at low cost and on the
community level. "Everybody talks about prevention being important,
but there really hasn't been many dollars allocated to prevention,"
said Dr. Richard Bergenstal, president-elect of the American Diabetes
Association and executive director of the International Diabetes
Center in St. Louis Park, Minn. "Because it's a long-term problem,
and everyone wants to fix something in the short term."
